Copyright Theft and Google Rankings
-
Here is another tough one we've been dealing with. We publish a niche book. For a decade we kept the information offline (no e-books). However, it was widely scanned and reproduced online. We've filed dozens of DMCA complaints over the years, but have found trying to rid the internet entirely of these infringing pages to be futile. We get 1 closed and find 3 more.
Two years ago we decided to put the information online ourselves, to generate an official community for our work it instead of "fighting it". We built a full site with hundreds of pages from the book for readers to use, free. Google indexed us, and we followed basic SEO... But in spite of a prime aged domain and a lot of links, we are literally BURIED in google. There are dozens of complete garbage spam sites that rank way higher than us.
I understand ranking takes time, and the niche is competitive. But the low quality landing pages that are ranking above us is just too confusing. We fear our work has been indexed by google so much over the years on other sites they will never connect it to us. We'll always be buried on page 14 as another scrape.
What would you do to correct this for a client? Could you?

To extend EGOL's excellent advice... these guys are using totally automated methods to scrape and post your content. So to fight back, you're also going to need to effectively automate as much of your discovery and takedown process as possible. You'll never beat enough of their automated volume processes with your own resource-intensive (i.e. fully manual) responses.
Good luck - I hate these assclowns with a fiery passion too. (Former pro photographer here.)

Glad to help. It makes me really mad when people steal content.
I forgot to add that your competitors might become your ally in this type of fight. I have an Indian competitor, a really smart and hard-to-beat company for the past decade, who joined me in fighting these infringers. If you can get another company in your niche to complain about the same websites, I think that will have a good impact. Never hurts to have friends in India.

Extremely thorough and insightful response. I hadn't thought of some of these other avenues. If nothing else, this gives us new things to try, and new reason to be hopeful.
THANK YOU!

I know how frustrating it can be when your work is grabbed by spammers.
We have work that has been wildly grabbed and republished by spammers in a competitive industry. Our approach was to get educated about copyright and fair use, get an attorney ready to help, if needed, and then attack the spammers with DMCA, complaints to Adsense and complaints to hosts. At first it seemed hopeless, but after nearly 200 DMCA's to Google and a lot of complaints to Adsense and hosting companies we are now seeing rewarding results.
If you are fighting this it is important to identify the spammers and then see if any high quality sites are linking to them, and then go after those links by letting the linking webmasters know that you are the real source of the information. Before you do that be sure that your online information is totally better than what the spammers have put up. If the spammers have up your whole collection and you only have half of it up then you are not as attractive of a link target.
Attacking with DMCA is the minimum. Send them to Google search while logged into your Google account and use the Copyright Removal Dashboard. That makes it easy for Google to see the mass of complaints that you are throwing at them. It also makes it fast and easy to file several complaints every morning.
If those sites are running Adsense, attack their income stream. Visit their site while logged into your adsense account. Then click on the "ad choices" button in the upper right corner of an Adsense ad on their page. That will take you to an Adsense Help page titled, "about google ads". Scroll down to the bottom of that page and you will see "Leave feedback on the website or ad you just saw". Click "the ads". Then click "Adwords ad feedback form". Then click on "An ad violates other AdWords policies". Use that form to complain that they are publishing your copyrighted content. I have found that the Adsense team often turns off the ads on those pages promptly and sometimes turns the ads off across the entire website.
Look at the Adsense codes on the websites to see if the same publisher code is used on lots of these sites. If you find this then hammer those sites with complaints. Be sure you let them know that these sites have MANY pages that contain stolen content to which you own copyright. Complain that the same publisher has lots of websites, each with lots of your content. Complain with enthusiasm.
Hosting companies will often respond by deleting images, pages or text that are your copyrighted content. They might also delete entire sites.
Keep in mind that submitting DMCA, attacking their Adsense or getting them kicked off of their hosting can make people really mad. So, be sure that you are within your right and they are not making fair use of your content. Google or adsense or hosts will give the infringer your name when they notify them that a complaint was filed and they removed them from search, killed their adsense income or booted them off of the server.
Good luck.
(The above contains information about legal matters and I am not an attorney. I warned you that you need advice from an attorney so that you know if these people are really infringing or if they are using your content under fair use. If you do any of the things listed above they could get an attorney who will try to sue your pants off. If you file DMCAs that are unmerited Google might provide free legal assistance or friends of the court support to the target of your DMCAs. You are dead meat of that happens.)

Rankings Continue To Drop
Hi there I'm at wits end trying to stop the slow bleed in our rankings to our store URL's that started mid March 2017 and continues through to today. I'd appreciate some pointers and hope this will throw up a challenge to someone out there. Here is the background: 1. We run an e-commerce store on Shopify with a blog. The recent ranking decline has been almost entirely on the store URL's (catalogue and product pages) while at the same time we have seen steady growth in search volumes in the blog - this makes me think we are seeing a Penguin4 penalty of some type, because the impact is confined to the store URLs. 2. We received a linked based manual penalty back in 2014 and this was successfully removed within 3 months. We have quite a large disavow file as a result. 3. Shortly after launch of Penguin 4.0 in Sept/Oct 2016 we saw a really nice boost in traffic and ascribed this to being under a previous Penguin algo penalty, now removed. 4. Come March 2017 we see a small but steady weekly drop in rankings for our store URL's only, this steady drop continues through to today and over time has become significant. Approximately a 50% decline in visitor numbers to store URL's only as of today, since March. All of this despite: a. Initially I thought this was a Panda issue (because it seemed to coincide with Panda releases in March and May) so the entire website has been rewritten (during June and July) with thin content removed across the store and the blog. Remaining content has been given a serious content boost, being very careful to watch for over-optimisation, and for keyword cannibalisation. I think I've got this right. There are also no crawl issues being highlighted by Moz Pro or SEMRush site audits. b. Recently discovered, only last week in fact. A very low domain website, trust score (0 and 0) had been copying our blog articles steadily on a weekly basis, starting Oct 2016 (yes same time as Penguin4) and only caught last week (my fault for missing this). These articles were copied verbatim with all links and so generated nearly 400 spammy backlinks to our store URLs (about 30% of all the links we have). I've had all these articles removed from the spammy site via DMCA so none of those links exist anymore (as of 8/14/17). I've also disavowed this domain with Google. Could these spam links be the issue, and Google is still needing to crawl this site to see the links are no longer there? I'm not sure because my understanding is that Penguin4 would have devalued these links to start? c. A general review of links and anchor text. I've used Moz Pro and SEMRush backlink audit (linked to Google Search Console) and have removed all toxic links by contacting web masters and using Google disavow. This included removing any links that I think are causing over optimised anchor text. After disavow, according to SEMRush, we have no toxic backlinks left and only 50 out of 1200 links with "Money" anchor text. This exercise was completed two days ago when the last disavow file was uploaded. However I don't believe there was an issue here before as toxic links were < 1% of all links and exact match "money" anchor text in the region of 5%. d. One potential problem with our backlinks is that we have quite a few high domain/high trust links to our scholarship page with anchor text "official website". The net result is that our "Other" anchor text category is just over 50% of total links - these are mainly educational institutions with .edu domains. e. A review of internal linking. We had some what I would refer to as SEO links, linking all product and collection pages across the store, through a tagging type system. This was removed two days ago as it was probably unnecessary for user experience. Other than this I have two concerns remaining with our internal linking structure. The first is that we have quite a big static navigation on the left margin of our store collection pages. This is not faceted navigation, but static. The second is that we've internally linked from almost every blog to our "key" money page in the store, however with varied and non-money anchor text. f. There is nothing in Google Search Console indicating a problem, no manual actions, no significant HTML improvements, and Google has indexed over 90% of URL's compared to the sitemap. All broken links have been fixed - there were a lot before but all fixed as of three weeks ago. g. Checking site speed in GA. Speed has remained constant over the period and we have put in some fixes to improve it. Site speed has not got worse and scores average in Googles speed checker. That's about it. It's possible that with the recent changes made with respect to b, c, e and f above I just need to wait a couple more weeks for Google to catch up, and would appreciate thoughts on this. However I'd also like some thoughts on the static navigation on our collection pages, plus importantly on linking from blog articles to mostly a single money page in the store - of all that remains I think this is potentially a problem. Our website is located at www.thekewlshop.com Many thanks for your help. Charles

Google displaying a content box above the listing link for top ranking listing in SERPs
Hi, In the attached Google SERP example the first listing below the paid search ads has a large box with a snippet of content from the relevant page then followed by the standard link. Does anyone know how you get Google to display a box like this in their SERPs? I checked the code on the page and there doesn't appear to be anything special about it such as any schema markup. It uses standard list code. Does this only appear for particular types of content or sites, such as medical content in this case? Is the content more likely to appear for lists? Does it only appear for high authority sites that Google has selected? We have a similar medical information based site and it would be great to try to get Google to display a similar box of content for some of our pages. Thanks. Damien ZmPJVSl.png

Google+ Page Question
Just started some work for a new client, I created a Google+ page and a connected YouTube page, then proceeded to claim a listing for them on google places for business which automatically created another Google+ page for the business listing. What do I do in this situation? Do I delete the YouTube page and Google+ page that I originally made and then recreate them using the Google+ page that was automatically created or do I just keep both pages going? If the latter is the case, do I use the same information to populate both pages and post the same content to both pages? That doesn't seem like it would be efficient or the right way to go about handling this but I could be wrong.

Google Ranking Generally in Germany - Keywords & Umlauts
Hi Mozzers, I was hoping i could get some advice/opinions on a website ranking problem i have been working on, in particular one of the pages. This is our German language website which is hosted from Germany and a flaunt German speaking member of staff from our German office moderates the text content of the website for us.Our website seems to get good traffic ,visitor navigation and conversions. One of the keywords i focus building around is Schallpegelmessgerät which is one way of basically saying Sound level meter in German. The keyword uses an umlaut which i cannot use in the URL, but google is picking up and putting into the snippets, but apart from that our on-page optimization is good according to the moz tool. I have been trying to improve our content and we post many blog articles around the topic/keyword but google.de seems to choose not to even display this on the first couple of pages and sometimes ranks our blog articles around the third page. We are even been outranked by some low quality cheap online shop websites some of which with low quality content and low page and domain authorities. I had accepted this but after looking at bing.de and doing a search i find our page in the top 5 results, i understand that google and bing's algorhythms are different but just struggling to get my head around it all. Here is our website & page - http://www.cirrusresearch.de/produkte/schallpegelmessgerat/ Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much for reading this James

Do onpage likes and shares affect Google ranking?
Hi All, I know that social bookmarks are considered to be a good thing when pointing to a specific page. Is that the same to simple facebook "Likes" and tweets? By Likes I mean on page and not on Facebook fan page. Thanks

Is Google mad at me for redirecting...?
Hi, I have an e-commerce website that sells unique items (one of a kind). We have hundreds of items and the items are rapidly sold. Up till now I kept the sold items under our "sold items" section but it started to get back at me as we have more "sold" than non sold and we are having duplication problems (the items are quite similar besides to sizes etc.). What should we do? Should we redirect 100 pages each week? Will Google be upset with that? (for driving it crazy) Thanks
