Drop in Rankings
-
Hello Webmasters,
My site has incurred a sudden dip in rankings across sections. We conducted an analysis and have observed the following two major issues:
- Unnatural Links Penalty: Our site was issued an Unnatural Links Penalty on May 23.
Basically, we have both 'http' and 'https' versions of our website registered on Webmaster tools. Initially, the warning showed up on the 'http' version and thus we started a cleanup by extracting the linking domains and have also filed a reconsideration request once all the spammy domains were removed and rightly disavowed.
Recently, we got another manual action warning on the 'https' version regarding the unnatural links. So we have started with the cleanup activity right away. While analyzing this issue, we came across another major problem regarding the two versions which is our next concern and is mentioned below.
- https Canonical Issue: For more insights, we went through our site’s content and found that our website is following the below pattern
Our 'http' version of the webpages get 301 redirected to the 'https' version. This 'https' version again has a canonical pointing to the 'http' version thus creating a loop.
To conclude, I request your valuable learnings and thoughts on the following:
- Which of these issues are likely to have affected our website’s ranking
- Which version is likely to be preferred by Google (https or http) in our case
-
Making sure that the https pages are canonicalized to https pages should be relatively easy and within your control. I would get that done right away.
If the canonicalization wasn't done right in the migration, it makes me wonder what else may not be right with the move to https. You might want to look here https://moz.com/blog/seo-tips-https-ssl, especially the links under "best practices" and double check all that.
The unnatural link clean up and reconsideration request will be more work intensive and take a lot more time and is on some level not entirely within your control, as you are left at Google's mercy.
Both need to be done, but they seem like very different sized problems with very different timelines to payoff.
Best of luck! ... Mike

How to check why our DA is gradually dropping
Greetings fellow Moz Community, first time asking a question here so kind of excited to be part of the community. I hired an SEO firm about three months ago. They have arranged high ranking DA guest posts for us as well as many other small low DA links. None of these links have any kind of a spam score. However for the past two months they have been helping, our website's DA has actually dropped by one point each month. Is this cause for concern? Any thoughts on how I can trace the drop? On a side-note, out of the 700+ keywords that didn't were ranking in the top 50, about 200 of them now are gone compared to last month. I don't know if this is related or not, but something looks awry.

Lower Level Pages Being Ranked for Key Terms
Good Afternoon We've been having problems with a site for a little while now. It had a penalty (partial link) a few years ago and never really recovered back to it's full potential despite the fact that the penalty was eventually removed and we've since changed the domain completely as well as moving over to https and left behind / disavowed bad links. In the Moz ranking stats now, I'm seeing that some of our lower level pages are ranking for core terms and the erratic nature of the ranking graph seems to indicate that Google is confused and not knowing what page to pull. For example, the top level page would be Hotel in Spain but the page that is ranking for that term is one of the individual hotel information (lower level) pages lets say the Holiday Inn . The lower level page has info on the individual property but also makes reference to it being a "Cheap Hotel In Spain" My suggestion to resolve the problem is to scale back the references to the top level terms on the hotel pages and reintroduce breadcrumb links to help Google follow the structure of the site again Does this sound reasonable or would anyone be able to suggest anything else to try?

Page has Noindex, nofollow, still ranks #1
Hi there, I have a question about a few pages on our site, whom has a no index, nofollow meta tag but they are still indexed and even rank number one in our market for the term. How is that possible or is it that Google just ignores the tags when they think it´s an error from our side? The url is www.drogisterij.net/kilo_killer and the keyword is kilo killer. We rank number 1 if you search from Google.nl Anyone have seen it before and know why this might be? Thanks in advance.

Google is ranking the wrong page
We are trying to figure out why google is ranking the wrong page for the key word motorcycle tires. We have a few ideas but are not sure yet. If you do a search for Motorcycle Tires you will see site on page 2 or top of 3; however, the page will be going to our dirt bike tires page (http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/44/86/176/742/Dirt-Bike-Tires-All) not our Motorcycle page (http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/49/-/181/750/Motorcycle-Tires-All) any thoughts? We think we know why but want others opinions too.

Site disappeared from rankings at 5th of October
Hello, I have a travel guide site at www.taylandgezirehberi.com It is the most detailed site about Thailand in Turkish language. It has 300 hundred pages of unique content that I wrote from scratch. Site was doing great at Google Turkey. I was at 2nd place for keyword "Tayland". Also I was in first 5 at almost every Tayland related keyword. I survived Penguin really good, but at 5th of October Penguin data refresh my site got totally trashed. Now site doesn't appear at any keyword at all. I suspect this maybe because of some link wheels that I bought about 8-9 months ago when I was inexperienced. Also I had 4-5 backlinks from my sites at other unique IP adresses. I admit doing mistakes, but I think the punishment was really harsh for a unique content site. I sent a reconsideration request, but got the answer "No manual spam actions found." I contacted the guy who did link wheel, had him removed some of the links. Also I used Disallow Tool and submitted some other spammy url's. This deranking effected me really bad, do you have some other suggestions that might help? Thanks a lot

Viral page not ranking onGoogle
A user generated talk thread on our social networking site went viral yesterday and generated around 36000 extra visits. But, when we Google the key phrase in this thread our site is not even in the Top 50. Instead the pages are dominated by other (lesser) websites referring to the content and linking to the thread The page is indexed The on page SEO grade for the key phrase and variant according to SEOMoz is A Our home page has a PR of 7 and an SEO Domain Authority of 76 We are the original source of this content Other talk threads on different subjects in a similar category are ranking on page 1 of Google. What's happening?

Pages plummeting in ranking
Hi all, I have a question, which i hope you can answer for me. I have a site www.betxpert.com (a danish betting site) and we have tried to do some SEO to improve conversions. One of the steps we have taken was to link to all of our bookmaker reviews in our menu (a mega menu). All of our bookmakers have an img and text link in the menu. The menu is shown on every page of the site. Since we have made this change we have been plumeting down the SERPs. For the search "betsafe" this page http://www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/betsafe is no longer in the top 50. We also added the "stars" so that the google result will show our over all review for the bookmaker, in order to stand out in the SERPs. Can anyone explain to me what the problem might be? Over extensive internal linking or?

Rankings plummeted... whhhaaaa!
Hey all, I just came on as the SEO Specialist for an Ecommerce site a few months ago and have been working quite hard on getting things in order with the site's architecture, dup content, backlinking etc. Last week we made the move from 3 subdomains of a top level domain to subdirectories as the content/products are too much alike to be running subdomains. The way it's working now is when a request comes in to the old subdomain, the redirect to the subdirectory is happening at the htaccess file with a permanent 301. That said, I got our SEOmoz ranking report today and we have plummeted all over the place keyword ranking wise. I am quite sure that it's due to the change in architecture that happened last week... but what do you all think? I would be appreciative of any advice or thoughts from the SEOmoz community. Much thanks!
