Shopify Duplicate Content in products
-
Hello Moz Community,
New to Moz and looking forward to beginning my journey towards SEO education and improving our clients' sites.
Our client's website is a Shopify store. https://spiritsofthewestcoast.com/
Our first Moz reports show 686 duplicate content issues. I will show the first 4 as examples.
As you can see, URL titles are unique. But I know that the content in each of those products have very similar product descriptions but not exactly. But since they have been flagged as a site issue by Moz, I am guessing that the content is 95% duplicate.
So can a rel=canonical be the right solution for this type of duplicate content?
Or should I be considering adding new content to each of 686 products to drop below the 95% threshold?
Or another solution that I may not be aware of.
Thanks in advance for your assistance and expertise!

You're welcome. Best of luck!

Thanks Erica,
Confirming that the actual page content is the issue helps me a lot. Thanks for the suggestions and now it's time to start the fixing those with the client.

The problem is definitely the actual page content is almost identical, even if the products are different. This is a very common problem for e-commerce sites. Typically, there are two solutions:
1. You write more unique content about each product. This can be daunting, but it does matter. You can also drive user reviews which are going to create user generated unique content for your products. I'd suggest doing a mix of them. (And yep, I've been there writing unique content for thousands of products, so I feel you.)
2. Instead of selling these very similar products on individual pages, you can make the different designs like e-commerce sites often show different colors. It becomes an option to choose the orca ones or the eagle ones, instead of a unique lander for each.

I just encountered the same issue with a client on Shopify.
I did notice that shopify creates two versions of the site. One version is the HTTPS and the other is HTTP. This creates a duplicate for each page. You may want to try filtering out one version and making change suggestions. When you update it will take effect on the other.
I am still trying to figure out some of the "collection pages" and how to move forward on these.
Good Question!
Matthew

Duplicate content : domain alias issue
Hello there ! Let's say my client has 2 webshops (that exists since long time, so many backlinks & good authority on both) : individuals.nl : for individuals (has 200 backlinks, let's say) pros.nl : exact same products, exact same content, but with a different branding intended to professionnals (has 100 backlinks, let's say) So, both websites are 99% identical and it has to remain like that !!! Obviously, this creates duplicate content issues. Goal : I want "individuals.nl" to get all ranking value (while "pros.nl" should remain accessible through direct access & appear on it's own brand queries). Solution ? Implement canonical tags on "pros**.nl**" that goes to "individuals.nl". That way, "individuals.nl" will get all ranking value, while "pros.nl" will still be reachable through direct access. However, "individuals.nl" will then replace "pros.nl" from SERP in the long-term. The only thing I want is to keep "pros.nl" visible for its own brand queries -> it won't be possible through organic search result, so, I'm just gonna buy those "pros" queries through paid search ! Put links on all pages of pros.nl to individuals.nl (but not the other way around), so that "pros.nl" will pass some ranking value to "individuals.nl" (but only a small part of the ranking value -> ideally, I would like to pass all link value to this domain). Could someone advise me ??? (I know it sound a bit complicated... but I don't have much choice ^^)

How to deal with duplicate pages on Shopify
Moz is alerting me that there's about 60 duplicate pages on my Shopify ecommerce site. Most of them are products. I'm not sure how to fix this since the coding for my site is in liquid. I'm not sure if this is something I even need to be worried about. Most of these duplicate pages are a result of product tags shopify sites use to group products you tag with characteristics that the user can select in the product view. here are a couple URLS: https://www.mamadoux.com/collections/all/hooded https://www.mamadoux.com/collections/all/jumpers https://www.mamadoux.com/collections/all/menswear

Duplicate Content - Captcha on Contact Form
I am going to be working on a site where the contact form is being flagged as duplicate content the URL is the same apart from having: /contact/10119 contact/31010 ...at the end of it. The only difference in the content of the page that I can see is the Captcha numbers? Is there a way to overcome this to stop duplicate content? Thanks in advance

Is duplicate content ok if its on LinkedIn?
Hey everyone, I am doing a duplicate content check using copyscape, and realized we have used a ton of the same content on LinkedIn as our website. Should we change the LinkedIn company page to be original? Or does it matter? Thank you!

Does anyone know a service or API or php lib to compare two (or more) pages and to return their similiarity (Level-3-Shingles). API would be greatly prefered.

Strange duplicate content issue
Hi there, SEOmoz crawler has identified a set of duplicate content that we are struggling to resolve. For example, the crawler picked up that this page www. creative - choices.co.uk/industry-insight/article/Advice-for-a-freelance-career is a duplicate of this page www. creative - choices.co.uk/develop-your-career/article/Advice-for-a-freelance-career. The latter page's content is the original and can be found in the CMS admin area whilst the former page is the duplicate and has no entry in the CMS. So we don't know where to begin if the "duplicate" page doesn't exist in the CMS. The crawler states that this page www. creative-choices.co.uk/industry-insight/inside/creative-writing is the referrer page. Looking at it, only the original page's link is showing on the referrer page, so how did the crawler get to the duplicate page?

E-Commerce Duplicate Content
Hello all We have an e-commerce website with approximately 3,000 products. Many of the products are displayed in multiple categories which in turn generates a different URL! 😞 Accross the entire site I have noticed that the product pages are always outranked by competitors who have lower page authority, domain authority, total links etc etc. I am convinced this is down to duplicate content issues. I understand there is no direct penalty but how would this affect our rankings? Is page rank split between all the duplicates, which in turn lowers it's ranking potential? I have looked for a way to identify duplicate content using Google analytics but i've been unsuccessful. If the duplicate content is the issue and page rank is divided am i best using canonical or 301 redirects? Sorry if this is an obvious question but If i'm correct we could see a huge improvement in rankings accross the board. Wow! Cheers Todd
