Question on canonicals
-
hi community
let's say i have to 2 e-commerce sites selling the same English books in different currencies - one of the site serves the UK market ( users can purchase in sterling) while another one European markets ( user can purchase in euro). Sites are identical.
SEO wise, while the "European" site homepage has a good ranking across major search engines in europe, product pages do not rank very well at all. Since site is a .com too it s hard to push it in local search engines.
I would like then to push one of the sites across all search engines,tackling duplicate content etc.Geotargeting would make the rest.
I would like to add canonicals tag pointing at the UK version across all EU site product pages, while leaving the EU homepage rank.
I have 2 doubts though:
-
is it ok to have canonical tags pointing at an external site.
-
is it ok to have part of a site with canonical tags, while other parts are left ranking?

Hi there,
While I agree with Logan that hreflang may actually be your best bet, in response to those specific questions:
-
Cross-domain canonicals are not inherently problematic.
-
By my understanding, at least, you're free to use rel="canonical" whenever you deem appropriate.

Hi,
It sounds like you should be using hreflang tags. These tags work similar to canonical tags, but help different country-specific versions of Google index content meant for searchers in those geographies. You can read up on the how/why here: https://moz.com/learn/seo/hreflang-tag

Webmaster tools question
Hi all. I have a question regarding http vs https. I have an https site and was wondering how to tell google in Webmaster tools to combine and use https. I have setup all sites in Webmaster tools. Both www and non www for both http and https. I see where to set up the www vs the non www but don't quite understand how to do the https part. I want all traffic to: https://www-creative -technology-solutions.com Thanks

Canonicals
We have a client that has his products listed on 20+ different websites, including 4 of his own. Also, he only has 1 of everything, so once he sells it then the product is gone. To battle this duplication issue, plus having a short internet lifespan of less than 4 weeks, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to canonical the products back to the category page. Kind of like using canonical tags on your "used blue widget" and "used red widget" pages back to the "used widgets" page. Would this help with the duplicate content issues? Is this a proper use of a canonical?

Popup Question
Hi Everyone, I have a question. Your input will be very much appreciated. My company's new website design is using a popup. I have some reservation about it and I want to know what your thoughts are. Ok, some information on what this popup is like. When a user clicks on a subcategory page, there's a popup that would ask for size, color, etc - it's like a form and those are the criteria. If nothing is selected, the product list on the subcategory page doesn't load - so the only thing is showing is the the H1 and description but everything else is empty. When a user does select a criteria the landing page is no longer the subcategory but another page with that ID. So basically the user never really land on the subcategory page but to another page with a different query string. Is this bad for SEO? Would you recommend to keep the popup? Thanks,

Windows IIS 7 Redirect Question
I want to redirect the following 4 pages to the home page: http://www.phbalancedpool.com/pool-repair/pool_repair_arizona.html http://www.phbalancedpool.com/About%20Pool%20Cleaning%20Arizona/About_Page_Pool_Cleaning_Arizona.html http://www.phbalancedpool.com/specials/Pool%20Cleaning%20and%20Pool%20Repair%20Specials.html http://www.phbalancedpool.com/service-areas-in-arizona/Chandler_Gilbert_Mesa_Queen%20Creek_San%20Tan%20Valley.html This is what I am currently using for my Web.config file: <configuration></configuration> <match url=".*"></match> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^phbalancedpool.com$"></add> <action type="Redirect" url="http://www.phbalancedpool.com/{R:0}" <="" span="">redirectType="Permanent" /></action> <location path="pool-repair/pool_repair_arizona.html"></location> <location path="About%20Pool%20Cleaning%20Arizona/About_Page_Pool_Cleaning_Arizona.html"></location> <location path="specials/Pool%20Cleaning%20and%20Pool%20Repair%20Specials.html"></location> <location path="service-areas-in-arizona/Chandler_Gilbert_Mesa_Queen%20Creek_San%20Tan%20Valley.html"></location> Only the first one is actually redirecting and I can't figure out why. What do I need to do to fix this?

Rel="canonical" and rewrite
Hi, I'm going to describe a scenario on one of my sites, I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the correct use of rel="canonical" here. Suppose I have a rewrite rule that has a rule like this: RewriteRule ^Online-Games /main/index.php So, in the index file, do I set the rel="canonical" to Online-Games or /main/index.php? Thanks.
