Republishing content?
-
What is the thoughts on republishing content that has already been published on a big new site onto company blog?
My gut feeling is at best Google will ignore at worst a penalty could be round the corner?
All thoughts welcome.
ThanksRichard

You'd be doing this with the big site's permission, right?
Then yes, as Chris said use a canonical pointing to the original source. That content on your site won't be indexed, but it will be there for visitors to your site to read without leaving your site, which is why I am assuming you'd do this in the first place.
And to make a quick point about the dreaded "duplicate content penalty"--it's not a penalty as such--Google just makes a call on which version to index and which one to drop. In this case, the original would probably indexed with or without the canonical (though you should use it anyway).
That being said, if you have a lot of scraped content, Google may not consider yours to be a quality site and that creates problems.

Richard,
If you're going to copy the content word for word, or scrape, a news site it's best practice to use a canonical tag on the duplicate content. The content is crawlable and you won't be penalized for duplicate content issues. The tag basically says 'here is the original source', giving credit to the proper source.

Hello Andy,
I personally don't like the idea, but yes, picking the article and publishing it exactly.
Would it be an alleviate it to credit the original source?
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,
Do you mean literally picking the whole thing up and dropping it onto your site or making changes to it before doing so? What is the reasoning behind thinking of doing this?
Generally this is going to be a problem of some sort, be it in the form of a penalty or being seen as plagiarism.

Duplicate content on site->citations? How important is it to change it?
Hi there, I recently realised that the citations and directories i was building used the same content than the one on my website. I know this is not best practice. I will for sure make sure it doesn't happen in the future, but I am affraid of the ones i built in the past. How much do you think this would affect my rankings, and do you think this is a priority to go through my citations and directories to modify it?

Anyone used this service before? - Organic Content Distribution
I was pitched today by a "content syndication network" that claims to be able to syndicate across 200 "local news" sites along with syndicate the content to the editors and writers social sites, along with the publisher social sites for a flat fee. Just like a MarketWire.com service but NOT for press releases. For articles. The company offering this is www.befirstinc.com. Need to vett them out and make sure this is not a FTC nor Google Quality Guidelines violation for SEO purposes.

SeoMoz duplicate content
Hi all, There's a lot of controversy around duplicated content. If you google "The New SEO Process (Quit Being Kanye)" you'll get tones of results with a copied content from the original article. How does google manages this? (duplicated or not) Is this good for the original content/website? Thank you Cornel

Directories and duplicate content.
Part of our link building strategy for a dentist is to submit their site to several relevant directories. If I enter the same description in each directory, is it possible that Google will consider this duplicate content and prevent link juice from being passed back to the dentist's site? Thanks folks, Jason

What are the best Content Syndication services?
Hi, I'm still trying to find the best methods to drive more traffic to my site ( geotherm.co.hu). Now I'm experimenting with Content Syndication, but yet I don't have any experience. Which are the best services? Are three sites that I should avoid?

Content for links - diminishing value?
I'm offering content in return for contextual links to a number of website owners in my niche, and the up-take seems to be there. My concern is that the written piece generally won't be linked to from the homepage (i.e. blog post, featured article, etc), and so over time there's the risk that it will be lost deeper and deeper in the site's hierarchy. Is this a big issue given (I'm assuming) my content's value will diminish over time, etc. Most of the webmasters, are however happy for me to supply content sporadically. Ot is it still definitely worth progressing? Thanks.

Templated content = duplicate content?
I'm curious where the line is drawn for "duplicate content" by the search engines. Obviously the same article, or even the same article with minor edits, can and should be detected as duplicate. I have a use case where there is a database of similar, but not duplicate, content that changes as time passes. I want to serve this content up via html template but don't want the 1000 pages to be considered duplicates of each other. Example: Imagine local weather. You could create a template for city name, longitude, latitude, altitude, and current weather conditions. The values for all fields would be different for each of the 1000 database entries (cities) and one of the "current weather conditions" would change frequently (hourly, let's say). Now, if I have a nice heirarchical index pages (first one maybe points to 50 state sub-pages, and each state page points to 20 city pages) that point to the 1000 city-specific pages, would the city-specific pages be considered 'duplicate' since they are based on the same HTML template but all have different values in key areas? Does the answer change based on the % of the template (or visible text) that changes for each city? My goal is to get these 1000 subpages as part of my site, have them indexable, and have them each flow a little bit of link juice to my home page. Best practices? What should I be careful of? Thanks!

Is publishing content on multiple platforms like Tumblr, Blogger, Posterous, etc. a legit way to build backlinks?
My client has a fishing report that is published weekly on his blog. Would it be wise to syndicate that content on these other services with backlinks baked into each one? Any thoughts?
