Website(s) Merge Questions
-
Hello Moz Community
I have three separate websites that I have planned on merging into one. I recently acquired a strong domain ( stronger than my existing ones ) & after much deliberation, I have decided to move them together into one domain.
Site 1) 1 Forum - Around since 2007 - Originally VBulletin, last year migrated to discourse.
Site 2) E-commercece Magento Site - Around since 2010
Site 3) WordPress - Blog & Articles - Around since last year - Currently using the new ( Main Domain I want to use )
After a lot of research and White Board Fridays, I was thinking this would be my best bet:
- newdomain.com - Merged WordPress & Magento CMS Page.
- newdomain.com/ forum <-- Will move my forum content & Install to the new domain.
- newdomain.com/ store <-- Will move my Ecommerce content & Install.
Between my developer and I, we have our heads around how to handle the technical aspect of the move, 301s to the new location etc.
But one area we want to research before pulling the trigger ( we haven't found much data on this )
**My Main Question:**What is the possible penalty coming for shopping websites vs. content-driven websites, and possibility that forum-based content hosted on the same domain might cause another penalty to be applied to the other content on the domain.
**My Developer Says:**In recent years, we noticed that forum content had been penalized in favor of editorially reviewed content when this is identified by search engines.
What big hiccups would / could we encounter from combining these 3 types of platforms into one site? Many thanks for any direction or insight. -
Thank you very much, I greatly appreciate the response. Any other feedback from is welcome.
Thank you!

For your "main question": I think the chances of this are slim if you maintain a quality site. Content review and moderation should be enforced in the forum to avoid any types of issues with low quality UGC... the migration is a good time to review the content you are copying over.
Regarding what your developer says, yes there is some risk of issues because of the forum, but if you do a good job moderating this shouldn't be any type of issue. Lastly, I wouldn't expect any type of "penalty" carrying over to the other sections of your site as G has gotten pretty decent lately at separating wheat from chaff when assessing site quality.
As a suggestion: I would set-up each of those subfolders independently within GSC so you can monitor for any traffic/impression fluctuations, higher profile pages, etc. independently.

Should I actively filter very similar questions (but not worded identically) and answers for my Q/A Website?
We're setting up a medical Q/A on our website. I anticipate a lot of questions being asked, which we have already answered before through other questions in the Q/A. For example "How do I plan my pregnancy if I am Diabetic?" , "I have been Diabetic for the past 5 years, and am planning to start a family. What should be my approach regarding this? Should I: Write two different answers for each question, but which will eventually have the same meaning. Some answers could end up looking almost identical. Redirect new questions to the old question by posting a link of the answer. Merging the two questions, or deleting on of the two. What is the best solution for maximising SEO Benefits, and minimizing the chances of a penalty?

SEO impact classifieds website
Hi, I'm part of an organization running a classifieds platform in Spain. (Mercadonline.es) We are hit by Google penalties since a few weeks, possibly caused by numerous errors we are experiencing. Most frequent errors are 404's and duplicate content (titles tags etc) since the nature of our website is dynamic. Many ads change daily, are added or removed, causing Googlebots (and others) to flag us and not being able to see our more unique content. Until what part of our platform should we be indexed? Since we have +34,000 pages indexed (mostly due to internal filter pages) I would need a systematic solution for us to display relevant and unique content, with enough usage of keywords that can bring us back up - we are actually ranked <50 on google for most of our main keywords. It is costing us precious time and money since we can only aquire our visitors (adwords etc) and not being to attract any organically. I can go in more detail with someone who can give me a bit more direction. Your answer is much appreciated! Ivor

Website not ranking but the blog is!
I am hoping someone might be able to help me, I am doing some work on a website. A new version of the site was recently launched and since then rankings have plummeted and the new blog pages are ranking better! When the new version of the site went live, the domain changed to the non-www version, plus an incorrect robots.txt file and we have never really been able to fully recover (both of these things were beyond my control!). The robots.txt file was corrected and some of the external links links changed to the non-www but there is a 301 redirect in place so changing to the non-www shouldn't have been the reason to drop the site out completely. Before the launch of the new website, the site was ranking on the front page of Google for a lot of relevant keywords such as outdoor blinds, outdoor blinds Perth, cafe blinds, patio blinds, etc. The quality of the links is pretty bad and I am attempting to remove them before doing a disavow of all the really bad quality links but unless we were really unlucky I don't think it's the links right now that are causing the problem. I have ran the site through numerous crawl tests, checked the robots.txt, there are no messages in GWMT, the pages are indexed but I have a feeling there is something wrong with the site that is stopping this site from ranking well. If anyone could give me any insights I would be really grateful. I know the site could be better structured from a keyword/ structure perspective but the site was ranking fine!

Question about creating friendly URLs
I am working on creating new SEO friendly URLs for my company website. The products are the items with the highest search volume and each is very geo-specific
Technical SEO | | theLotter
There is not a high search volume for the geo-location associated with the product, but the searches we do get convert well. Do you think it is preferable to leave the location out of the URL or include it?0 -
Duplicate video content question
This is really two questions in one. 1. If we put a video on YouTube and on our site via Wistia, how would that affect our rankings/authority/credibility? Would we get punished for duplicate video content? 2. If we put a Wistia hosted video on our website twice, on two different pages, we would get hit for having duplicate content? Any other suggestions regarding hosting on Wistia and YouTube versus just Wistia for product videos would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Magento URL Question
Calling all Magento Kings out there! I'm working on a client' site - powered by magento. I'm looking to rewrite a lot of the URLs. I know there is the URL rewrite tool, but I think what I need to do may go beyond this. Typical example would be: Old URL - http://www.xxxxxxxx.co.uk/fabric/product/product-black-screen-print-and-silver-fabric.html New URL - http://www.xxxxxx.co.uk/fabric/product/silver I know that magento's URLs seem to be created through categories so wanted to double check with someone the best way to do this. Also, I've heard that 301 redirects of non www to www in the .htaccess has a knock on effect on discounts? All comments greatly appreciated.
