Technical Organization of E-commerce Site
-
Hi Mozzers!
I'm working on a site that is a bit of a mess (http://www.selectequipment.net/) and wanted to ask for some feedback on a couple of items.
In addition to organizing the site by product category types, the client also has brand pages that include all products of a certain brand.
One problem, however, is that I want to be able to target the relatively large number of consumers who are using searches of BRAND + PRODUCT type in the most optimal fashion. For example, someone looking for "Cutler Hammer Transformers".
We have several products with different part numbers that would fit this bill and I'm wondering if we'd be okay just having several products (ie Cutler Hammer Transform 100xa, Cutler Hammer Transform 110xb) or if we'd be better off adding an organizational page for all "Cutler Hammer Transformers for Sale".
There are a LOT of different combos that we'd need to do this for. Is it a good call?

Are you referring to having a page like this -- http://www.selectequipment.net/brands/Cutler-Hammer and simply adding a facet/filter for product type?
The individual product pages Should be optimized for Brand+Product+Model.
The faceted navigation within the site alludes to the fact that you can "drill down" onto a specific brand, but clicking the link takes to the general brand page vs. a page filtered for that brand... or allowing you to filter product type when viewing by brand..
In this case, I would create the navigable heirarchy within the site to view all of the brands and filter by product type within the brand pages, essentially creating all of these "combos" you are talking about. Further, I would create limits so pages with fewer than say 5 unique items (you determine appropriate #) are noindex, follow. Lastly, I would make sure all product pages are also optimized to include the brand, product type, and part number as part of the optimization goals for each product page.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Jake Bohall

How did these sites get two organic listings?
Hi Guys, If you type the keyword "car seat covers" on Google Australia. You will see one site screenshot below: https://image.prntscr.com/image/lgfcK6DmSSGRo3Jx06yWag.png With double listing and then a site below that with another double listing see: https://image.prntscr.com/image/4yJfPzRjR5mPaQb4rr9l-Q.png Does anyone know why Google is giving both of these double listings, is it something to do with their internal linking? Cheers.

Site Migration and Traffic Help!
Hi Moz, I recently migrated my website with the help of an SEO company using 301 redirects. The reason for the move was to change our CMS from .aspx to Drupal/Wordpress. The homepage (www.shiftins.com) and the blog (www.shiftins.com/blog) were the only two pages that kept the same url. Everything else was redirected. It's been about two months since the redirects were completed and traffic has dropped off about 90%. I'm starting to worry that something was not done properly and my traffic may never return. The process for the redirects seem correct when I checked the work the SEO company did. All pages were duplicated, redirected to individual pages, then the old pages were de-indexed. Are there any insights the community can provide? Please help!

E-commerce category page optimization - filters vs. categories
Hi, We currently have a site where there are several subcategories for every main category. So this means that visitors will have to click through 3-4 subcategories before reaching products that they could have easily found if the site would be using filters on category pages. My question is - if a subcategory page with 4 products is currently a category page (optimized heading, description) and I'd want this category to be available through filters, how do I still keep it optimized for search engines? So under a category "Cleaners", we have all cleaning products. There are 8 "Cable cleaners" under this category. This is currently a subcategory, but I'd just solve this with a filter in the "Cleaners" screen. Not sure what's right from an SEO standpoint here.

How are you taking you e-commerce site forward in 2014
Hi MOZland, With a new (our first e-commerce) client, we're going through a massive learning curve in handling a site of substantial size and complexity for the first time. While we've weeded out most of the on-page stuff that needed sorting, and we're in the process of dumping poor links implemented by previous SEO/online marketing efforts, do you have any suggestions about how to take a big e-commerce site forward in 2014, especially concerning technical pitfalls and link building efforts (and given that guest blogging has become something of a faux pas). Cheers, M

Google Indexed the HTTPS version of an e-commerce site
Hi, I am working with a new e-commerce site. The way they are setup is that once you add an item to the cart, you'll be put onto secure HTTPS versions of the page as you continue to browse. Well, somehow this translated to Google indexing the whole site as HTTPS, even the home page. Couple questions: 1. I assume that is bad or could hurt rankings, or at a minimum is not the best practice for SEO, right? 2. Assuming it is something we don't want, how would we go about getting the http versions of pages indexed instead of https? Do we need rel-canonical on each page to be to the http version? Anything else that would help? Thanks!

Merging three sites to one
Hi guys, I just wanted confirmation if this is the right way to go about doing this. I need to merge three websites and I've never done three websites in to a brand new site before. Ok so we have Sitex.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Profero
Sitey.com
Sitez.com We've created a SiteB.com SiteB.com has SiteB.com/SiteXCat
SiteB.com/SiteYCat
SiteB.com/SiteZCat Each X,Y and Z have over 1,000 pages. They only have about 10 pages each with Page Authority above 10 and the domains arn't that strong. What i plan to do is: 301 redirect each site domain (X,Y,,Z) to it's corresponding category. e.g. Sitex.com > SiteB.com/SiteXCat 301 redirect each page off X,Y,Z that has a Page Authority above 10 to their new pages on SiteB.com Then, I'm unsure if i should 410 every other URL... I don't think its worht 301 every single URL if they arn't in search results much - but maybe it is if they have a lot of inbound links even with low page authority? Any ideas and does the above seem the best practise? Thanks.0
