Penguin 4.0 update: drop in results end of September
-
Has anyone noticed certain drops in keyword rankings on/around 29 September?
Has this to do with the Penguin 4.0 update?
I read that this hasn't come "bug-free". Will this be adjusted the upcoming weeks? Or is this drop content-based based on the new algorithms and the content needs to be adjusted/updated?

Hi Rob, I run an ecommerce site. My site used to rank #2 (my homepage) and #3 (my product page) for my primary keyword. #1 has always been my competitor's homepage. Now, my competitor's Shop page -- which uses this keyword only 6x within the content of that page -- is #2 bumping me down to #3 and #4
Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.

Based on what I've been reading, there are a hefty number of SEO's who have been seeing drops in their rankings (about a third of my SEO friends have reported drops, while some have reported increases). I think there is definitely something to be said by the fact that drops are occurring about 1-2 weeks after the gradual rollout of Penguin 4.0. There's definitely a correlation.
The algorithm is always being adjusted, but that doesn't mean the drops are going to be affected significantly.
Lastly, there are very few people I have spoken to who are relating their drops to poor content. Most engaged in some form of sketchy link building at some point during the history of their website(s) and they are now paying the price. I would encourage you to look back through your link profile and determine if this is what is going on for your site(s).
However, if you are seeing drops and your link profile is squeaky clean, it may very well be your content (Panda or Hummingbird). I doubt this because your drops sync so well with the release of Penguin 4.0, but it might be worth checking over your content and using GA to see where your drops are occurring. From what I have read, a telltale sign of Penguin 4.0 affecting your site is to look at your individual page rankings (rather than your Home page). Google isn't penalizing your entire domain anymore, just the pages that have link spam on them.
Looking forward to what other folks are seeing with regard to these new developments.
Cheers,
Rob

GA 4 Question
What differences are you typically seeing in Google Analytics 4 compared to UA? For one site I have, UA says there were 2,342 new users. GA4 says there were 1,899 new users for the same time period. Does that seem like a normal amount of difference between the two platforms?

Traffic drop after analytics troubles
Hi For two weeks we had an artifical low bouncerate & high pageviews/visit in our Analytics reporting. The day we corrected the bug in Analytics - our bouncerate & pageviews/visit returned to normal levels - however we saw our search traffic go down massively(-50% in sessions). The bug in the Analytics was caused by a second Analytics tag which was included in an external script which interfered with our own tag. The drop in traffic occurred just after the removal of the second script (which was only on our site for two weeks). We didn't touch our own tagging - and there were no technical changes on the site during this period, and there is no seasonal trend which could explain the sudden drop of traffic. We double checked our tagging - and the analytics tag is present & working on all the pages of our site. On the organic traffic report from analytics you can clearly see the when the troubles with analytics started & ended (artificial low bounce rate) - and that the traffic drop starts right after the reporting issue ended. Webmastertools also indicated a lower number of views/clicks, but not to the massive 50% drop. Is it possible that Google uses the measurements from Analytics for it's SERP's? Or should there be another reason, and where should we start looking? Appreciate your help! e5GmoMM

Mobile redirect causing traffic drop? Can I move analytics code to capture them as visitors before redirecting them?
Yesterday I implemented a mobile redirect as I don't have a mobile version of my site. As a result I've seen a drop in traffic which makes sense as my redirect script is at the top of the page. If I were to move the redirect script below the analytics code would that allow me to still track mobile users? Would this affect my bounce rate though?

When Penguins Attack...
I'm hoping for a couple of second opinions of my conclusions here before I shoot 60% of our link profile in the head...
Reporting & Analytics | | WorldText
a) I've not needed to deal with an angry Penguin before,
b) it's not as black and white as most of the blog posts seem to find. Domain is www.world-text.com The Penguin Google Says... ● We have no unnatural links warning in WMT
● We have dropped out of the top 50 for all keywords except three. Those three are a couple of pages down.
● We still own page 1 for a brand search (World Text), though we lost the bottom result.
● Overall traffic down 25%, organic down 50%, SERPs impressions down 50-70% I'd love to know where the remaining organic Google traffic is coming from as we currently rank for nothing (useful anyway); the analytics doesn't show the usual off a cliff to nothing, more a few quiet weeks. Several other players in the sector appear to have been obliterated too - searches on several keywords are a total mess with total unknowns and spam showing up on page 1 SERPs. Adwords traffic is up markedly which I put down to the mess that is SERPs Our adwords are nicely optimised and our top keywords are hitting quality scores of >=8, mostly 9 or 10. Why did the Penguin Peck?... Simple. Opensiteexplorer should make it blindingly obvious what the issue is. We have a horrible link profile that I have been muttering about for 18 months or more. ● Long before I joined seems they got a 5,000 search friendly directory submissions package or equivalent
● Sadly not a single one of them was from the long obsolete SEOMoz directories list, or worth keeping.
● Every single last one of them has identical anchor text and description. Still, makes for easy analysis.
● The anchor text used isn't likely to be searched often
"World-Text.com Text Messaging Services"
● 3 of 4 originally submitted sites/directories have since expired, removed links etc Findings 740 judged bad domains:
All the identical anchor text SEO directories
a couple of others picked out as unwanted
the domains serving malware Only 235 class Cs in these
144 have 0-2 indexed pages - not useful for a directory! 500 judged maybe:
No links found even though in WMT (a lot of these)
down, suspended etc (a lot of these too)
parked
links that are less than ideal but not identically anchored spam.
(for instance someone who had linked to us has had their site scraped and dropped on dozen or more forums including our link) another pass of these in a week or so, just in case some come back to life... 400 judged good (well harmless):
Natural links
real directories
all the assorted alexa like scrapers, domain valuation junk etc. Executing Penguins and other vermin... Apparently pretending to know nothing doesn't help, so... ● Disavow the three discovered sites serving malware
● Remove where possible every last one of the SEO directory entries avoiding any extorted payment. Track contacts and responses.
● Disavow the rest {Reconsideration request} I KNOW this is for manual penalties, and we don't have one, BUT I've seen countless sources suggesting reconsideration for Penguin. Really? Anyway that was far longer than intended, so thanks for making it this far! I look forward to comments!0 -
Feedburner stats show drop in multiple feeds from 6/21/13 to 6/22\. Anyone else seen the same?
Client has 3 RSS feeds in Feedburner, and they saw a drop in subscribers from 6/21 to 6/22. Wondering if anyone else has saw a drop recently. Obviously, this could be the results of multiple people cleaning up their feeds, but it appears too coincidental. Has anyone heard if there are any recent issues with Feedburner tracking?

My Google Webmaster Search Queries are 0??!!
For the past 2 days Google Webmaster has recorded 0 search queries to my site, but traffic seems stable. Any ideas about why this is happening and what I should do about it? Or is it a Google glitch I should not be concerned about (hoping for this option)

Page Optimization score is An A but Rank is dropping
New to company in SEO and they wanted a page to rank high for certain term : knowledge management on this page: http://www.apqc.org/knowledge-management Ran SEO Moz optimizer and did suggested changes. Moved score to A and ranking was on google first page but now it's dropped considerably last 2 months as the bounce rate has gone through the roof. I'm at my wits end and don't want the higher ups on me for the drop. I'm not sure what to try next.
