What would you study?

Hey all, so here's a question....
I have been involved in SEO and Websites for about 10 years and have a fairly good grasp on SEO principles but feel that I should have a better knowledge of coding to take my knowledge to the next level.
Assuming that my knowledge of coding is zero, what would you SEO guru's suggest that I learn to improve my skills in SEO?

I think that the answer that is right for me might be different than the answer that is right for you.
In the 1990s I used perl to code a basic shopping cart and used it for a couple of years. I collected non-personal data about the customers' purchase intentions and passed it to Verisign, who collected personal and credit card data to complete the sale. I used perl to code message boards, calculators, grade homework assignments, generate webpages from databases and much more. All of this was done before such things were commercialized and made-to-order by big companies.
I stopped programming over ten years ago because it became so easy to get people to write short programs for me at freelance sites - and because age made it hard for me to concentrate hard on code. I can write the specs and someone will code it and post a working copy before I have to pay for anything. They get it done faster than I could have done the work myself - and at a cost that is much lower than the cost of my time. And, its kinda nice to now know a few people in Poland, India, or Peru who I can message through the freelance site to see if they will do a job for me.
Today, if I used WordPress, I would want to know php. There are a lot of other widely-used content managers, shopping carts and other service platforms that use various languages. I would learn the language that served my platform. If I needed general data handing I would learn perl. I require most freelancers to code in perl because I can understand it and can scan the code to be sure that they are not transmitting anything. I can also tweak the code a year later if small tweaks are needed. If I have a really big job or a job that handles really important functions, I will go to someone in the USA who I know and trust.

Planning an analytical article focused on link building. Do you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see analyzed in a data-backed study?
So far, I'm working backwards. Goal: product a data-rich piece of content that will help other agencies or internal marketing departments explain trends in link building and show the value in it. Means to gather data: Moz, Ahrefs, manual searching What is missing right now is the angle. I was thinking about taking 100 high volume keywords in the SaaS/software space, and looking for trends in the sites that rank well with regards to search volumes and number of links etc. This feels a bit weak to me. Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any insights so thank you for taking the time!

What are you doing to change their stars?
I read on PCWorld a piece by John Rebeiro (@JohnRebeiro) about Google's employee diversity. In it, Google in the US is 70% male and 61% white. There is more data and it's worth a read. My question for those of you who may employ more than a 2 to 3 people is are you actively engaged in doing anything to change the stars of young women, minorities, lower income children, etc.? Why do I ask? Because early on in my Mozziness I saw someone ask for some help with a site around children and autism. From Rand to every mozzer on Q&A there was an outpouring of help. I was truly moved. I would love to learn from others who are further along in these types of efforts.

Google does make an effort in that they have RISE awards to assist with those who are working to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) with girls and minorities. These awards are from $10K to $100K to help expand these types of programs. We have had paid interns for some time now and we get as much or more than we give from that effort (boastful disclosure: Our head of development today was our first intern!) We put on a one week Code Camp (go to our site/code-camp) a few months ago and it was amazing - for me and for our team. But, to see kids eyes open up as they realize they have found something they never even thought they would have an interest in is mind blowing. We decided we would give a $25 gift card to Best Buy for the student who was most engaged and pushed the most to learn more, etc. That winner had never thought of coding as something SHE would have an interest in and she was an unbelievable sponge. She pushed our dev staff to give her more and more and it was truly fun and rewarding for them. Yes, we had to spend some time and money, but the break from the day to day of a marketing firm for our team truly invigorated them. I just want to know what others might be doing in the areas of trying get more diversity in the ranks of those who work in our world? It would be great to share ideas and resources. I will tell you that if anyone needs tips, what we learned, etc. I would be more than happy to share all.3 -
