Directory Listings no longer counted in Backlinks?

Interesting situation when I looked at Google Search Console this morning, I found that back-links from directories had dropped off and am wondering if anyone else is seeing this?
Specifically, I am in Australia and had links from Yellowpages.com.au and Truelocal.com.au to my primary domain.
Interestingly, Yellow Pages had gone a bit crazy recently in that the number of links to my site seemed to balloon exponentially from about 50 when I first listed to 700+ to 1500+ to 1800+ and then the balloon popped. Truelocal in contrast was only ever showing the 1 link.
There have not been any changes from my end, and I only ever had one listing in these directories so not sure what generated all these extra links in Yellow Pages.
Anyone else in Australia noticed a sudden drop off in Google Backlinks from Directories? If not it may just be a temporary blip.

directory links are still a very much required part of the deal for major directories to say the least. Sure, a lot of them do not pass any link juice or Google may discount a lot of those links in its ranking factors, but you just want to be present where people actually check and where data aggregators grab their source data from.There has to be a reason why Moz local still is as service that charges people for exactly these "directory" listings...

Thanks Bernadette. True, I have noticed some movement in the past on other sites that I manage but these links have always been a constant on my site and it was just a bit of a heart-attack moment to see back-links drop from almost 1900 to 91.
Hopefully it settles over time and there is no impact to SERPS I guess we'll find out in due course

Excal, I've always looked considered the links that are shown in Google Search Console to be a "snippet" of all of the links to your website. For example, there are links that I know are pointing to our website that are good links--but they come and go in Google Search Console. They don't show us all the links. So, just as you have seen them go away, there's a good chance that they will come back and be listed again.
I do know that the more often you download the links the more often they will refresh the list of links.

Spammy backlinks
I am very new to this site and need some help. I have two spammy backlinks in my report that were done by my host provider as I hired them for SEO. When I click on the web site there is no where to contact them. I can only subscribe to their group and I sure don't want to do that. Is having two ranking as an 8+ awful. I don't know if I should do the Disavow route or not.

Backlinks and Domain Authority
Hi there, I have a question on backlinks. I have seen conflicting stories about it, and hoping someone with a vast amount of experience will be able to help me (If you could please be so kind). Now I understand the difference between 'no-follow' links and 'follow' links. I have accumulated quite a few 'no-follow' links through things like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter etc. I understand that they won't feed my site authority or trust; or anything of that sort (I do work on content too, and have gotten a few follow links, don't worry). Now I have seen conflicting answers to the actual importance of them. Some things I have read are saying that SEs completely ignore them (NFL), and they don't even consider them a 'link', but rather a user tool to further the experience of the reader on your site. Which is fair enough, but then people are turning around and also saying that Google relies heavily on them, and they only make up 5% of the internet or something. I have even read something saying they are the only ones worth getting (I know that is bs, but they must have a reason behind this thought?). If someone could enlighten me as to a 'ideal' ratio, and also any little known authoritative sites I could look at submitting content to. I am in the plumbing business, and doing my own sites, so I'm no expert. Also, what are the importance of comment links? I don't go for them, but don't know if I should? Worth paying for directory listings?
I'm going through the recommended SEO directory list but I notice that most of them are paid listings. I have been told that it is not worth spending any money on this, so why are there so many recommended in this list?

Backlinks... If you can beat them & join them?!
I have a competitor who has swooped in on most of the key search terms in my niche, solely through artificial backlinking. There is a direct and obvious correlation between this link building and rise in the serps. I know the mantra around here is creating good content and gaining real links, which I am doing. But I am waiting to unleash this content during a site relaunch which is months away. I don't want to sit around and do nothing while this site makes money and builds their list. I have money to spend and want to go head to head with this site. Would it make sense for me to go and copy all of the links this competitor has built? At least 90% of them are profiles, article subs and blog comments. Also, what do you think would be the best way to tackle this? Any guidance as always is appreciated.

Question on Links from Directories…

When I do an OSE back link analyses of some sites that are listed in some directories we are considering, for almost all the directories and companies in them, the directories are listed in the OSE report, listed as followed, and usually have decent domain rank and page rank. So this means that the link from the directory is obviously being picked up by OSE and it’s listed as a followable link. My question is just because the link is picked up by OSE does that mean that the search engines value it too? Or could Google see the link ok but throw it out of the equation, presumably because it does not “like” the directory? Hope this makes sense

Multiple submissions to article directories
Hello, I would like to ask if I can submit the same article to multiple article directories. I have read that while only the first published article will gain credit and show on search engines, but the all the links generated from the publishing the article at different sites will still tally up and count as separate backlinks to my website. Is this true, or is 1 or a few links going to be counted from the 1 article?

How can I get listed in DMOZ.org
I was listed in DMOZ for over 10 years. Then suddenly my listing dropped out (I suspect a competitor is an editor and bumped us) and my rankings have dropped a bit.
