Subdomains, blogs and redirects, oh my!
-
Hello!
We are currently hosting our blog on Medium which I would like to move away from. The options now are to host the blog with our custom CMS or use the HubSpot blog capabilities. I know their blog has built-in SEO best practices but I'm pretty sure it hosts the blog on a subdomain. I keep getting conflicting advice on this. In a whiteboard Friday Rand once said to NEVER host on a subdomain. But I know that google now associates links that redirect to the original site. I.e. If redpepperland.com redirects to repepper.land then redpepper.land should have all the link juice of redpepperland.com, right? But Moz doesn't recognize any inbound links to redpepper.land, I have to actually put redpepperland.com in as an additional site to see those links and the domain authority which worries me.
So I guess two questions:
1. Does anyone have experience with Hubspot's blog? Will the subdomain hurt our SEO efforts?
2. Does google now know how to associate a redirect's link juice and domain authority to the page it redirects to?
Not sure I know what I'm talking about at all but any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much Tyler! This was helpful.

1. I do not have experience with a Hubspot blog, but I don't think a subdomain will hurt your efforts. I have always read that the best way to do it is in a subdirectory, but the difference between that and a subdomain isn't that big. You can setup a Wordpress blog pretty easy.
2. Google does know how to associate a redirect's link juice and domain authority to the page it redirects to. Gary Illyes said- all redirects pass PageRank now https://www.seroundtable.com/google-redirects-not-seo-22777.html

Does redirected traffic still contribute to SEO?
My company recently rebranded with a new website (and comparatively lower authority). We've built a bunch of backlinks for our old website, which now redirect to the new one, and I was wondering if these still contribute to SEO? Is there a difference in the SEO effect of a direct link versus a redirected one?

Guest Blogging good or bad?
Hello Mozzers, Matt Cutts once told that guest blogging is a bad way to get links, then he relativized it again and said it's okay. We all know Google doesn't want to count those links, what they want are editorially given links. Now my question, what's your view on this topic? Do you still use guest blogging as a link building technique? Best regards, grobro

Blog comments question
Hi, I don't tend to blog comment that much unless it's actually a genuine comment as in, my first thought wasn't gaining a link back. What is the best practise for this type of link building? This is how I do it (When I am looking to gain a link back) title - brand name website - root domain comment - I try and go above and beyond with this, take it out of the spam arena by reading the article and then replying with at least 100 words referencing to part of the article. Would you classify the above as the wrong way about it? I know some say no-follow links (most blog comments out there) don't count but when I see the external link pop up in WMT it does make me think no-follow links count for something. Cheers

Blog Commenting good or bad?
I spend a good amount of time on SEO forums and I found a thread about building links within comments.. I personally don't see how putting my keyword in my name place and linking it to my site will benefit me, I feel like google is already on to this and no one is going to click on it. Is this a waste of time?

301 redirect and how linking domains are counted
I have a domain with several great links to it and I decided to change it to a new domain. I did a 301 redirect to the new domain. My question: Let's say youtube.com is linking to the old domain that is being redirected. Do I want to get a new link from youtube to the new domain as well, or is that pointless since there is already one to the old domain? Thanks,
