Nothing I Know About SEO can Explain these Rankings?

Hi all,
I have a client who wants to rank more prominently for "plastic surgeon jupiter fl", a key term in his niche that attracts 11-50 searches per month (but these are potentially big ticket clients).
If you look at the first page of results for that term, I can't make any sense of them. I've checked page speed, Google listing optimization, on-page SEO, link metrics etc. and there seems to be no correlation with good on-page SEO, quality links (or volume of links). Any thoughts??
I literally cannot explain why the #1 site shows 2 inbound links via Moz OSE and almost no on-page SEO to speak of while sites ranking page 2 have better on-page SEO, more links, higher quality links (from what I can tell) etc.

I'm currently doing an audit for a client and would like to include domain age in comparison to competitors. Can you recommend a reliable source?
I have used this site (http://checkpagerank.net/index.php), but I've noticed at lot of sites coming up blank for domain age recently, which I'm guessing is related to PageRank data no longer available?
Would also be interested in what other high level domain/link authority metrics you would recommend? I currently use:
- MOZ (DA and PA), as well as root domains and total links, plus
- ahrefs (DR and UR), as well as referring domains, backlinks, keywords and organic traffic.

From my location (far away) your client is #7 in the Local Finder view in Maps, so at least they are in the running to improve.

I see the two big clusters on Maps from which Google is drawing most of the top 10 local results, and the good news is that a second competitor Aqua, is in your client's own cluster and is ranking #2 locally, so this would indicate to me that there is no geographic barrier to your client moving upwards.
Yes, I'd work on getting some more native Google reviews in the coming few months. I notice on the website for your client, you are mentioning some high level news connections. Have you earned links from them, by chance? Links can move the needle when little else can.

Thanks for the feedback! I had looked at that also and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason based on location bias from what I could tell. The client Im working on is DrBafitis.com (should be top of page 2 for that term). The competitive analysis I performed covered the following items without helping me understand this SERP much at all...
- Page load speed (mobile and desktop)
- On-page optimization elements
- DA/PA + # of inbound links to page and domain
- Google Listing optimization, location, category selection and reviews
- Depth/length of information on pages
- The ranking page (home or other page)
I'm guessing this is a just a very clustered field in terms of competitors all having stats in the same ballpark. We'll just keep pulling the levers on user experience, page content and link outreach until we see some impact!

Sounds like you are working on a thorough competitive audit (which is the right thing to do and which I can't replicate here in the forum) but I will tell you one very interesting thing I see about that #1 local and organic ranking competitor (Allure). Go look at where their building is located on G Maps. Then, open a second G Maps tag and look up Jupiter, FL. Do you see where the word Jupiter is on the map? That's the 'centroid', and interestingly, that is right where this business happens to be located. The centroid doesn't typically override other factors (like domain authority, NAP consistency, reviews, etc), and the effect of the centroid should typically be even less powerful on the organic results, but in this case, since you've asked why that business is number one, I find it pretty interesting looking at their location.
Without knowing who your client is, I can't make a comparison, and it's totally fine if you're not authorized to share that info here, but I'd do the same search for your client that you did for Allure and see how they stack up.
Also, don't forget 2 factors: age and freshness. How long has that website been established and how frequently do they publish new content? Then, of course, there are reviews. Allure is strong here in the local finder view, but they aren't blowing the field away. Some lower competitors, in fact, have a few more reviews.
As I mentioned, a thorough audit is the only answer here. But, I thought the above factor worth mentioning.

From what I understand, mobile-friendly is a pass fail. But, as mentioned I have checked load speeds on mobile and desktop and that doesn't seem to be a factor either as top ranking pages perform poorly.

Any chance the top-ranking organic sites have a higher mobile-friendly score? That's about the only other thing I can think of besides CTR.

Thanks for the input, the client does have a Google business listing, good reviews, they are located in the target city etc but I was referring more to the normal organic results (not local pack). Looking at Moz keyword explorer SERP data, site load speeds, etc. I can't for the life of me come up with a good reason to explain why the ranking sites are doing so well.

For that search, I see 3 ads, then a local pack of 3, then organics and more ads. The organics include 2 of the 3 local pack.
Two theories: one, the top results may have the best clickthrough rates - not something you'll be able to prove or disprove. Two, it appears as though for the local pack Google is trying to display several results from a small geographic area. I'd make sure the client has a map listing. Hope that at least sparks some ideas for you.

Rankings Continue To Drop
Hi there I'm at wits end trying to stop the slow bleed in our rankings to our store URL's that started mid March 2017 and continues through to today. I'd appreciate some pointers and hope this will throw up a challenge to someone out there. Here is the background: 1. We run an e-commerce store on Shopify with a blog. The recent ranking decline has been almost entirely on the store URL's (catalogue and product pages) while at the same time we have seen steady growth in search volumes in the blog - this makes me think we are seeing a Penguin4 penalty of some type, because the impact is confined to the store URLs. 2. We received a linked based manual penalty back in 2014 and this was successfully removed within 3 months. We have quite a large disavow file as a result. 3. Shortly after launch of Penguin 4.0 in Sept/Oct 2016 we saw a really nice boost in traffic and ascribed this to being under a previous Penguin algo penalty, now removed. 4. Come March 2017 we see a small but steady weekly drop in rankings for our store URL's only, this steady drop continues through to today and over time has become significant. Approximately a 50% decline in visitor numbers to store URL's only as of today, since March. All of this despite: a. Initially I thought this was a Panda issue (because it seemed to coincide with Panda releases in March and May) so the entire website has been rewritten (during June and July) with thin content removed across the store and the blog. Remaining content has been given a serious content boost, being very careful to watch for over-optimisation, and for keyword cannibalisation. I think I've got this right. There are also no crawl issues being highlighted by Moz Pro or SEMRush site audits. b. Recently discovered, only last week in fact. A very low domain website, trust score (0 and 0) had been copying our blog articles steadily on a weekly basis, starting Oct 2016 (yes same time as Penguin4) and only caught last week (my fault for missing this). These articles were copied verbatim with all links and so generated nearly 400 spammy backlinks to our store URLs (about 30% of all the links we have). I've had all these articles removed from the spammy site via DMCA so none of those links exist anymore (as of 8/14/17). I've also disavowed this domain with Google. Could these spam links be the issue, and Google is still needing to crawl this site to see the links are no longer there? I'm not sure because my understanding is that Penguin4 would have devalued these links to start? c. A general review of links and anchor text. I've used Moz Pro and SEMRush backlink audit (linked to Google Search Console) and have removed all toxic links by contacting web masters and using Google disavow. This included removing any links that I think are causing over optimised anchor text. After disavow, according to SEMRush, we have no toxic backlinks left and only 50 out of 1200 links with "Money" anchor text. This exercise was completed two days ago when the last disavow file was uploaded. However I don't believe there was an issue here before as toxic links were < 1% of all links and exact match "money" anchor text in the region of 5%. d. One potential problem with our backlinks is that we have quite a few high domain/high trust links to our scholarship page with anchor text "official website". The net result is that our "Other" anchor text category is just over 50% of total links - these are mainly educational institutions with .edu domains. e. A review of internal linking. We had some what I would refer to as SEO links, linking all product and collection pages across the store, through a tagging type system. This was removed two days ago as it was probably unnecessary for user experience. Other than this I have two concerns remaining with our internal linking structure. The first is that we have quite a big static navigation on the left margin of our store collection pages. This is not faceted navigation, but static. The second is that we've internally linked from almost every blog to our "key" money page in the store, however with varied and non-money anchor text. f. There is nothing in Google Search Console indicating a problem, no manual actions, no significant HTML improvements, and Google has indexed over 90% of URL's compared to the sitemap. All broken links have been fixed - there were a lot before but all fixed as of three weeks ago. g. Checking site speed in GA. Speed has remained constant over the period and we have put in some fixes to improve it. Site speed has not got worse and scores average in Googles speed checker. That's about it. It's possible that with the recent changes made with respect to b, c, e and f above I just need to wait a couple more weeks for Google to catch up, and would appreciate thoughts on this. However I'd also like some thoughts on the static navigation on our collection pages, plus importantly on linking from blog articles to mostly a single money page in the store - of all that remains I think this is potentially a problem. Silly Question still - Because I am paying high to google adwords is it possible google can't rank me high in organic?
Hello All, My ecommerce site gone in penalty more than 3 years before and within 3 months I got message from google penalty removed. Since then till date my organic ranking is very worst. In this 3 years I improved my site onpage very great. If I compare my site with all other competitors who are ranking in top 10 then my onpage that includes all schema, reviews, sitemap, header tags, meta's etc, social media, site structure, most imp speed, google page speed insight score, pingdom, w3c errors, alexa rank, global rank, UI, offers, design, content, code to text raito, engagement rate, page views, time on site etc all my sites always good compare to competitors. They also have few backlinks I do have few backlinks only. I am doing very high google adwords and my conversion rate is very very good. But do you think because I am paying since last 3 year high to google because of that google have some setting or strategy that those who perform well in adwords so not to bring up in organic? Is it possible I can talk with google on this? If yes then what will be the medium of conversation? Pls give some valuable inputs I am performing very much in paid so user end site is very very well. Ranking Above sub-domains
So I work for a company that has a very successful affiliate that operates under a third level domain name such as "region.company.com". Their SEO practices are very good and they rank highly in keyword searches. However "company.com" does not even though it is not a subdomain. Even after optimizing the company.com's pages etc, the regional sub domain ranks much higher for keywords and the main company fails to rank at all. Is Google discounting the main company's page? Is it a matter of trust or time? or is it something else? How can I get Google to prioritize the main company website rather than a lower level domain affiliate?

SEO for a plumber?
Hello, How does a small, local business win at SEO (without abusing directories, articles, and paid links)? It seems that everyone is saying "create unique content", but that just doesn't seem realistic for a small plumber in a big metro area. One might suggest coming up with helpful articles about plumbing tips, etc., but there are thousands of spun articles on article directories already. On page optimization is in place, we are listed in the main directories, we've asked the people we know to link to us, and we are engaged in social media. What would you recommend next? Thanks, Will

Rankings Dropped
Hello, I wonder if anyone can point us in the right direction. Our main domain name has got a good SEO profile the domain is 12 years old and we have some good reputable links. On the 7th of Jan our website dropped in the rankings from 3rd to 10th for one of our main keywords and from then onwards some of our other keywords have dropped. We have a lot of landing pages that target specific keywords which look like a template page but just with the content changed. Can anyone pin point what could of caused this problem or has anyone experienced this before and knows how to fix it. I personally think we have been hit by the panda. Thanks, Scott

Pages that were ranking now are not?
Hi Folks Noticed something strange just now pages that were ranking on position 10 on Google for searches such as 'ufc trainer kinect best price' at the start of this week are no longer ranking? Is what has happened to the site the famous google dance or sandbox effect as the site only officially went live on Monday If this is the case what is the recommended course of action to get back ranking competitively again? as I have no idea on what has gone wrong as I has always tried to follow best practice from these forums and the SEOMOZ and YOUMOZ articles My site is www.cheapfindergames.com Many Thanks Ian
