What's the average rank update time after site and/or backlink changes?
-
What's currently the typical time, ON AVERAGE, it takes to see ranking changes when significant improvements are made to significant ranking signals on a long-established (as opposed to brand new) website?
Does the rank update associated with on-page optimization happen sooner than addition of quality backlinks?
-
Yeah, I mean with big news sites you can see that their articles get indexed by Google almost immediately after it's published. As you said, depends on the prominence of the site, as well as how deep the page is within the site structure. On ecommerce sites, sometimes you can see that product pages that are really deep within the site structure and buried amongst thousands upon thousands of other products won't have been crawled in like 2 months.
You can always check pages in Google search to see when the page was last cached or, if you're using Chrome, by appending "cache:" before the URL in the address bar (e.g. cache:www.moz.com). Gives you the date and time of Google's last cache of the page. Could always monitor that every day on another site for up to a week, and see how many times Google crawls it in a week to get an idea of frequency.
-
That makes sense so essentially you are saying the ranking update takes minutes to "sometimes hours" from the point that Google crawls and adds the changes whether for the target site or a referring site? Obviously on the target site you can see the crawl frequency through the Webmaster Console.
I would guess that it isn't that difficult to guesstimate the average crawl frequency of other sites based on working on a variety of sites and seeing how long crawls take to get updates. I've seen on prominent forum sites new forum posts appear within minutes. An old, outdated site with years old static content I would guess it gets crawled no more than once every???
So it would seem a reasonable answer to the question is 5 minutes to a week for the majority of sites ??
I would expect there are a lot of people on here though with long-time experience with a variety of websites that could confirm the typical average. "Hours to months" is a very wide range. Think of a bell curve where the middle portion of the curve represents 2/3 of all sites. What's the average rank update delay for the middle section of the bell curve?

You're more likely to get advice if you created your own question than hijacking someone else's, since it's a completely different question. Good luck!

I have also Question One, i don't understand how is this website : competitor website clashroyale-gemme .com/ beter them my website i analze i have more more backlink and my website is strong have good seo but not on first position, you can tell me what is problem, my website is 4-5# and competitor 1# ..

Depends on the frequency at which Google crawls the site. If the improvements are all on-site then you wait until Google next crawls the site, and you should see your rankings improve, or you can request a URL fetch and submit to index via Google Search Console to prompt Google to crawl your site asap. Then you can see the position changes that very day - sometimes within minutes, sometimes within hours.
If the improvements made were off-site then the same applies, except that you can't request Google's Fetch URL tool. You just have to wait until those sites get crawled, and see what happens. Depending on how frequently Google crawls that site, it could take hours, days, weeks or even months.

Does location of my VPS and IP adress matter to Google's ranking?
We're busy with adding a German version of our webshop. Right now we're quit successful in The Netherlands with our webshop and SEO. I wonder if Google minds the location of the website (VPS) and IP address concerning SEO for our German webshop. If I Google on this subject I can not find a clear answer. Can somebody help me?

Ranking 1st for a keyword - but when 's' is added to the end we are ranking on the second page
Hi everyone - hope you are well. I can't get my head around why we are ranking 1st for a specific keyword, but then when 's' is added to the end of the keyword - we are ranking on the second page. What could be the cause of this? I thought that Google would class both of the keywords the same, in this case, let's say the keyword was 'button'. We would be ranking 1st for 'button', but 'buttons' we are ranking on the second page. Any ideas? - I appreciate every comment.

New Website Look/Structure - Should I Redirect or Update Pages w/ Quality Inbound Links
This questing is regarding an ecommerce website that I hand wrote(html) in 1997. One of the first click and buy websites, with cart/admin system that I also developed. After all this time, the Old plain HTML look just doesnt cut it. I just updated to XHTML w/ a very modern look, and believe the structured data will index better. All products and current category pages will have the identical vrls taken from the old version. I decided to go with the switch after manual penalty, which has since been removed... I figured now is the time to update. My big question is that over the years, a lot of my backlinks came from products/news that are either no longer relevant or just not available. The pages do exist, but can only be found from the Outbound Link Source. For SEO purposes, I have thought a few things I can do but can't decide which one is the best choice. Any Insight or suggestions would be Awesome! 1. Redirect the old link to the most relevant page in my current catalog. 2. Add my new header/footer to old page(this will add a navigation bar w/ brands/cats/etc) 3. Simply add a nice new image to the top of these pages linking home & update any broken/irrelevant links. I was also considering adding just the very top 2 inches of my header(logo, search box, phone, address) *note, some of these pages do receive some traffic. Nothing huge, but consider the 50+ pages, it ads up.

There's NO reason these sites should be beating mine...Or is there?
Hi Over the past 10 months, my internal page rankings (previously excellent) have plummeted. I'm now trying to recover them. I haven't received an unnatural links warning in Google Webmaster Tools. Also, I used to have hundreds of internal links to each of these 21 pages using the same exact-match anchor text eg, Tuscany real estate, Umbria real estate, etc. I changed this about 6 months ago. So why am I still ranking poorly for these (only moderately competitive keywords) behind sites with poorer metrics? 1) Keyword: lake como real estate My page here – **http://tinyurl.com/d34k8m ** -- used to rank No1 or No2 neck-and-neck with this page www.immobiliarevacanzelago.com/. He's still No1 but I’m down to about No13. Yet when I look in Open Site Explorer virtually all my metrics beat his.

Killing 404 errors on our site in Google's index
Having moved a site across to Magento, obviously re-directs were a large part of that, ensuring all the old products and categories linked up correctly with the new site structure. However, we came up against an issue where we needed to add, delete, then re-add products. This, coupled with a misunderstanding of the csv upload processing, meant that although the old urls redirected, some of the new Magento urls changed and then didn't redirect: For Example: mysite/product would get deleted re-added and become: mysite/product-1324 We now know what we did wrong to ensure it doesn't continue to happen if we weret o delete and re-add a product, but Google contains all these old URLs in its index which has caused people to search for products on Google, click through, then land on the 404 page - far from ideal. We kind of assumed, with continual updating of sitemaps and time, that Google would realise and update the URL accordingly. But this hasn't happened - we are still getting plenty of 404 errors on certain product searches (These aren't appearing in SEOmoz, there are no links to the old URL on the site, only Google, as the index contains the old URL). Aside from going through and finding the products affected (no easy task), and setting up redirects for each one, is there any way we can tell Google 'These URLs are no longer a thing, forget them and move on, let's make a fresh start and Happy New Year'?

Our site is recieving traffic for both .com/page and .com/page/ with the trailing slash.
Our site is recieving traffic for both .com/page and .com/page/ with the trailing slash. Should we rewrite to just the trailing slash or without because of duplicates. The other question is, if we do a rewrite, google has indexed some pages with the slash and some without - i am assuming we will lose rank for one of them once we do the rewrite, correct?
