Sitemap Indexed vs. Submitted
-
My sitemap has been submitted to Google for well over 6 months and is updated frequently, a total of 979 URLs have been submitted by only 145 indexed. What can I do to get Google to index them all?

SF finding 'useless' links is actually part of its purpose, if you believe they're useless you should be asking why they're there. Your XML sitemap should have nothing but clean URLs; 200 response codes and not canonicalized to another URL. The problem isn't that you have category URLs, it's that those (like the one in my previous example) have a canonical tag that points elsewhere. Anytime this is the case, the URL is considered un-indexable. You can see the proof of this by doing a Google search for "https://www.interstellarstore.com/meteorite-jewelry/meteorite-necklaces", I just checked and this URL isn't in the index.
You mentioned the age in your original comment that your XML sitemap had been submitted for well over 6 months, that's where I got the age from, maybe I misunderstood?
You have no reason to not trust SF, it's one of the most valuable tools in an SEO's toolbox. I've used it for 5+ years to create hundreds of sitemaps and countless other SEO tasks with no problem in providing reliable, accurate data points.

Hi Logan,
I tried using Screaming Frog but it kept finding useless links, so I wrote the sitemap myself and I update it manually, I updated it only this morning. What makes you think it is over 6 months since an update?
I was told on Moz in an earlier post that having all of the category links, not just the canonical ones, wasn't a problem, is this not the case?
Every link in the sitemap should work fine, I wrote it by copy and pasting the links directly from my site. I have no trust in Screaming Frog.

Hi,
I poked around a bit on your sitemap and noticed a couple things:
- You've got URLs on there that have canonicals to another page. For example:This page https://www.interstellarstore.com/meteorite-jewelry/meteorite-necklaces has a canonical tag that points here https://www.interstellarstore.com/meteorite-necklaces.
- A bunch of the URLs in your sitemap redirect elsewhere or have no response - I got 13% through crawling your XML sitemap with Screaming Frog and there were zero 200 response code URLs, not good.
Both of these things combined are causing a discrepancy in the amount of submitted URLs vs. indexed URLs. If you use Screaming Frog to create your XML sitemap it's quite easy to have only clean URLs in there. You can easily remove all URLs that are not 200 status and by default Screaming Frog will exclude any URL that canonicalizes to another URL.
Also, as a side note, you should be updating your XML sitemap more frequently, a 6 month old sitemap for an ecommerce site is far too old with new products being added and products dropping off.

"No Index" Extensions
Hi there, We run an e-commerce website and we are aware of our duplicate page content/title problems. We know about the "rel canonical" tag and the "no index" tag but I am more interested in the latter. We use a CMS called Magento. Now, Magento has an extension that allows you to use the "no follow" and "no index" tag on products. Google has indexed many of our pages and I wanted to know if applying the "no index" tag on duplicate pages will instruct Google to remove the duplicate url's it has already indexed. I know the tag will tell Google not to index a page but what if I apply it to a product already indexed?

Home page not being indexed
Hi Moz crew. I have two sites (one is a client's and one is mine). They are both Wordpress sites and both are hosted on WP Engine. They have both been set up for a long time, and are "on-page" optimized. Pages from each site are indexed, but Google is not indexing the homepage for either site. Just to be clear - I can set up and work on a Wordpress site, but am not a programmer. Both seem to be fine according to my Moz dashboard. I have Webmaster tools set up for each - and as far as I can tell (definitely not an exper in webmaster tools) they are okay. I have done the obvious and checked that the the box preventing Google from crawling is not checked, and I believe I have set up the proper re-directs and canonicals. Thanks in advance! Brent

Wordpress Config Thoughts: Multisite vs. Parent/Child Themes vs. Infinite WP?
We publish four local food and drink magazines, each with its own website and related web content. Even though the content across all four titles shares a common mission, there is little overlap in actual stories. That is, each site has its own story content, events calendar and business listing guide. Still, since we share an editorial staff and a common look among all four, we are debating the pros and cons of a few different wordpress and SEO configurations, and would welcome the community's input on the pros and cons. Here is what we are considering for the Wordpress configuration: Wordpress Multisite - concerns about 10-15% performance hit, incompatibility with certain plug ins, need to more ‘expert’ development InfiniteWP - concerns that adding a 3rd party plugin to the mix might complicate things Parent / child themes A single wordpress site with different content subfolders for each locale - simplifies events / guide listings / seo, but too much in one place? Problems with current config (four different wordpress installs across four different base domains - ediblemanhattan.com, ediblebrooklyn.com, ediblelongisland.com, etc) SEO value is currently spread across four base domains Four different wordpress installs / upgrades / templates / plugins must be managed separately Four different namespaces for registered users make cross-domain registration more difficult, less usable The independent site approach is potentially problematic if we were to decide to combine certain site features - for example guide and event listings - into a single site experience filterable by zip / location Our questions: WP config: independent sites vs. multisite vs. parent/child themes vs. other? SEO config: should we move to shared parent domain? If we do, should we use locale-based subfolders or second level domains (brooklyn.ediblemag.com vs. ediblemag.com/brooklyn)? Operations: We think there are SEO advantages to move all four sites share the same base domain - ex, ediblemagazine.com, but are there operational disadvantages we are not considering? Ability for local site editors to work within their locale section only Ability for ad sales to target a single locale, example, run of site display ads on specific locales Ability to segment users by their locale - ex. enroll users in email lists for edible brooklyn only

Content not indexed
How come i google content that resides on my website and on my homepage and my site doesn't come up? I know the content is unique i wrote that. I have a feeling i have some kind of a crawling issue but cannot determine what it is. I ran the crawling test and other tools and didn't find anything. Google shows me that pages are indexed but yet its weird try googling snippets of content and you'll see my site isnt anywhere. Have you experienced that before? First i thought it was penalized but i submitted the reconsideration request and it came back clear, No manual spam action found. And i did not get any message in my GWMT either. Any thoughts?

Removing pages from index
Hello, I run an e-commerce website. I just realized that Google has "pagination" pages in the index which should not be there. In fact, I have no idea how they got there. For example, www.mydomain.com/category-name.asp?page=3434532

There are hundreds of these pages in the index. There are no links to these pages on the website, so I am assuming someone is trying to ruin my rankings by linking to the pages that do not exist. The page content displays category information with no products. I realize that its a flaw in design, and I am working on fixing it (301 none existent pages). Meanwhile, I am not sure if I should request removal of these pages. If so, what is the best way to request bulk removal. Also, should I 301, 404 or 410 these pages? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Alex0
