Best Tips to Get In the Local Pack
-
Apart from making sure your business information is 100% accurate, etc., what are your best tips to get a company ranking in the local pack? Do they need to rank well organically to be considered for the local pack or is it solely based on the consistency of their GMB page?

Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough response, Miriam! I really appreciate it.
I am looking forward to seeing the annual Local Search Ranking Factors 2017 study once that is released—I will keep an eye out for it!
Thanks again!

Thanks, Ria! These are extremely helpful.
It's crazy how much of a change we've seen with proximity impacting the local pack—but it makes sense and definitely provides the user better options! It is just a hard pill to swallow at times.
Thanks again!

Hey There!
In addition to Ria's smart tips, I would focus on links when you need to move the needle. Earning/building links on authoritative local and industry websites would be key here. This is one of the only things, honestly, that can make a serious difference when you are in a super competitive geo-industry market (like a personal injury attorney in LA!).
And I want to emphasize content publication - your ultimate goal is to become Google's idea of being THE authority on your topic, whether that's auto glass repair, organic groceries or yoga. You can become THE authority to Google by becoming THE authority to local consumers - the site they turn to for specific topical information, and that they link to, share, review, etc.
There are believed to be several hundred factors that Google takes into account in determining local pack rankings, so, understandably, it's a pretty nuanced environment. A bakery in rural California is going to be able to rank well with very minimal effort, but their location in San Francisco is going to have more of an uphill battle, simply due to the strength and breadth of their local competition.
Something to keep on your radar: the annual Local Search Ranking Factors 2017 study will be being released here on Moz soon. This polls the opinions of some of the top Local SEOs in the world, and you will be able to gain expert insight into what really brainy folks feel is impacting rank most heavily today, both in the local and local-organic results. So, stay tuned for that as it's coming soon!

Nice tips, Ria. I'll add some more!

There are many factors to it, but I've personally found the main influencers to be:
- citations, citations, citations.... consistent across all local directories
- reviews... I find sometimes that a client won't be ranking in the local pack, and then they get a couple of reviews on Google and are included.
- good presence or mentions on local websites (local news, local blogs, local businesses, etc)
- PROXIMITY! Local pack is all about proximity these days. Not something that can be easily helped, but it's good to bear in mind.

Website showing #1 in Local search, disappeared from Organic search - previously #1?
We manage a website santamaryflorist.com - a local Ohio florist. She is #1 ranked on Google Local results (and also on Yahoo and Bing). The site's homepage was previously #1 ranked for Organic but has disappeared from Organic ranking over the past few days. It shows occasionally as #1 in organic, like every few hours, but typically does not show. - Sub-pages are still showing on organic but not front page- Last week we had some issues with crawl errors but those seem to be resolved for several days (pages not available)_Why would the site be showing #1 in Local but only occasionally as the #1 result in organic but most of the time not showing in Organic results at all? _

Local citations from business directories in other countries
Hi all, I normally work for clients in my home county (The Netherlands) and with local citation building I focus on Dutch websites or well know .com websites in the Netherlands. My rule of thumb kinda was, if it’s not known in the Netherlands it isn’t worth getting mentioned there. Since The Netherlands are pretty small and I think Google ain’t perfect I was wondering if it makes sense to list a Dutch business on any .com business listings that are internationally big, but aren’t well known in the Netherlands. Two reasons that got me thinking this direction: A big well known Dutch company offers a service such as Moz local and did integrate their service with several international business listing websites that I never heard off, since these business directories focus themselves on other parts of the world. Google ain’t perfect and I think they got more budget to identify trustworthy business directories with an international focus or a focus on America then with a focus on The Netherlands. So I’m wondering if it makes any sense to list a Dutch business on let’s say the top 20 international business directories (although these directories don’t have any brand recognition in The Netherlands).

Multiple locations and local directories
Hello, A client has opened a new office in another city. I have created a local landing page for this city. Now I want to build citations for it. However, I have already set up directories like Yelp/Yell with the primary/original address in the original city. Is it OK to set up new citations using the new city local address. The company name stays the same obviously. So I will have duplicate listings on the directories for the same company. Will this work? Thanks for any help

New design for Googles Local Search results. No more "7 Pack"
Hello MOZ-People,
Local Listings | | Andre-S
since yesterday I see (here in germany) for many keywords, that the local results in Google (the so called "7 Pack") is just a "3 Pack". AND, and this leads to my question, for keywords that suggest Google that you want to rent a vacation home, I see the possibility to enter the dates for arrival and departure (see the pic). But for now, it seems that changeing the dates has no impact on the results. Has anyone a clue, what Google has in mind with these dates? Is the an official Google response I have missed? Thank you for your answers. Best regards

Moz local...worth $84 a year?
I am currently showing up in local results for my business but when i run a Moz local test, it shows that i only have a current score of 29% and by using Moz Local it says i could get to a score of 86%. Will enrolling in Moz local help my pages to rank higher in the search engines for different queries, or does it just help my site show up in the local results at the top of the serps? I only have one business in one city so it might not be worth it for me. My business is a service though and i travel to many different cities. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks mozzers! Ron

Is there any data about how user interact with the local 7 pack listing, do they scroll past it or use it like a normal SERP ?
Does any one have any data about how users interact with the local 7 pack listings in regards to position to CTR ratios, do everyday users tend to scroll past it to the normal SERPs as they might do with adwords ads (as the local pack is formatted slightly different to normal SERPs) ? bMvtUSe.png

New Local Search Results Appearance/Rankings?
Hi everybody! My team and I are all noticing a new layout for local search results. We just noticed it today. Mobile and desktop results appear to be affected. Specifically, we are looking at searches like "event spaces in Richmond" and "restaurants in Raleigh" as 2 examples. The listings appear differently in the SERPs, and the top results really are not relevant to the search queries. Is anybody noticing anything similar, or does anyone have any insight into whether this is something Google is testing or if it's here to stay? Also, any advice for overcoming rankings drops as a result of these changes? Thanks in advance!
