Keywords Dropping Out
-
Hi
In March I've seen a lot of keywords go from being ranked, to dropping out completely. We usually get under 1000 drop in and out each month, but 2,500 dropped out this month.
Some are not focus keywords I'd be concerned about, but then some are....
I am trying to work out why and could use some help.
We haven't changed anything on the pages & here are some examples:
- http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/dollies-load-movers-door-skates - previously ranked for 'Dollies' position 6 now unranked
- http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/sack-trucks - ranked position 11 for 'Folding Sack Truck' now unranked
- http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/portable-workbenches-trestles - ranked position 7 for portable workbenches now unranked.
These pages do still rank for other keywords, so aren't out of Google completely.
I'm just trying to identify if we have any other issues
Thank you

It's not necessarily a bad thing to have a product page rank over the category page. As you said, it depends on what experience you want to give the searcher. If they've searched broadly, they might expect a broader result and will therefore result in a higher conversion rate with the landing page as they are given the options they were looking for. Rather than being given a specific product page that they weren't exactly looking for, and bouncing immediately back to search despite you offering what they were looking for on another page...
If there is really not much at all that differentiates the products in a certain category, it might be worth having a look to see what kind of traffic/keywords the product page pulls in. If the category page is stronger for that term and the products, I'd even go so far as to "follow, noindex" it and work on optimising the category page for search instead (including all the long tails that the products would otherwise pull in. Optimise it for both the category _and _the product), and focus more on user experience on product pages. Obviously, this would be a case-by-case basis and I would not recommend applying this en masse.
If this tends to be a pattern with your products, that you have a lot of products that are similar differing only in things like size or colour, then maybe it's time to rethink your site structure and system. Could all these product pages be a single product page with different options for ecommerce? Would this not benefit your user too, as they could land on the page and see all the options available from the single product page? Think about clothes websites (for example), you choose the model which takes you to the single product page where you can choose colour/size/etc. Would probably make SEO easier for these kinds of products too.

Hi
Thank you, is it such a bad thing for a product page to rank over a category page? Ultimately we want to give the customer a choice of products if the term they've used is broad enough.
For something like 'Folding Sack Trucks,' I'd prefer a category page to rank, but there aren't many long tail search terms we could use on product pages for this keyword, so how can you avoid targeting 'folding sack trucks' on product pages selling this just in slightly different variations?
I mean in terms of content the category pages are 'thin' as the company want to list the products available without putting lots of content to distract the customer...
Thanks

I would begin by prioritising which pages are most valuable for that keyword ranking, and fixing up the content to emphasise what differentiates that product from the others, highlighting its unique features, etc, to reduce the amount of conflicting pages with "thin content". Ensure that you also work closely on the competing product pages of all the priority pages you are initially targeting. Take it one page at a time, and monitor the changes as you go.
**EDIT: **Sorry, I misread your reply. You have product pages ranking where you want category pages to be ranking. In that case, ensure that your category pages are not considered "thin", but avoid over-optimising product pages for the keywords that you want category pages to be ranking for. Maybe also naturally insert a link to the parent category page from the product page. Product pages should still highlight features that differentiate it from other products, don't be afraid to get specific, but think about how you can de-optimise the product page for its broader term that you are targeting with the category page. Product pages are perfect for long tail search terms.

Sometimes this targeting comes from your content on other websites. It could be your content on one strong website or many weak or even spammy websites. These weasels grab your page and slap it on their website(s) and then Google gets confused about "Who owns this content?". Google says that they are pretty good at knowing who owns what content, but I don't think that they are as good at it as they think they are or as good as what they are saying.
This problem can be especially bad if you publish lots of new pages and the spammers can easily identify them, grab them and republish. Blog content with posts identified by month all on a same page or retail sites with a "new products" page could easily be targeted.

Hi
Yes I have just checked some of these and it seems that I now have product pages ranking instead of category pages.
With some many products which are very similar, I'm not even sure where to start with this?!
Thank you for highlighting it

I often find that the biggest reason for a page fluctuating so wildly in SERPs for a keyword is because there are other pages too closely targeting that specific keyword, creating cannibalisation issues and Google confused about which page should be ranking. Do you believe that there is any possibility that this could be the case?

Keyword stuffing in document
Hi, I recieve a grade A on my on page grader, however i get "Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document" - now on my page, i am not sure if its avoidable. It says this is highly important, but here is the issue. My website specialises in a particular product, so we have many variations of that product, different fabrics, styles, trimmings etc, so we have over 50 URLS pertaining to different variations of that "keyword" it's not in a spammy way, its actually done as customers are searching for it that way. Let's say for example scarves. Cotton Scarves, Viscose Scarves, Polyester Scarves, Pom Pom Scarves, etc etc So on my homepage even if i reduce the text mentions of "scarves" the urls still have 50 or so with it as the title, and in the URL. So how do i avoid this form of "keyword Stuffing" ?

Breadcrumb wording and keywords
This is real estate website related. For every neighborhood I have a "condos" and "houses" page. In the breadcrumb structure I may have: "home > island condos > city condos > region condos > neighborhood condos". Questions: Some breadrumb structures have 5-6 different breadcrumb link and repeating the word "condos" in each link seems redundant. Would it be better just to list "island", "city", "region", "neighborhood" and never use the word "condos" or "houses" in the breadcrumbs? For users this would be better. If I implement what I suggest in 1) - deleting "condos" or "houses" wording from breadcrumb links, then on a condos page the word "region" (as an example) will lead to the "region condos" page whereas the exact same word "region" on a house page will lead to the "region houses" page. This means I will have a situation where the anchor text in breadcrumbs become 100% identical for my "condos" and "houses" pages, however, the they lead to different pages. Is this OK? I have in past been told that when I use internal anchor text, that the link should always leads to the same page. Having same anchor leading to different pages would not be good….is that so? thank you

Optimize Pages for Keywords Prior to Building Links?
Greetings MOZ Community: According to site audit by a reputable SEO firm last November, my commercial real estate web site has a toxic link profile which is very weak (about 58% of links qualified as toxic). The SEO firm suggests than we immediately start pruning the link profile, requesting removal of the toxic links and eventually filing a link disavow file with Google for links that web masters will not agree to remove. While removing toxic links, the SEO firm proposes to simultaneously solicit very high quality links, to try to obtain 7-12 high quality links per month. My question is the following: is it putting the cart before the horse to work on link building without optimizing pages (with Yoast) for specific keywords? I would think that Google considers how each page is optimized for specific terms; which terms are used within the link structure, as well as terms within the meta tags. My site is partially optimized, but optimization has never been done thoroughly. Should the pages of the site be optimized for the top 25-30 terms before link building begins. Or can that be done at a later stage. Note that my link profile is pretty atrocious. My site at the moment is receiving about 1,000 unique visitors a week from organic search. However 70% of the traffic is from terms that are not relevant. The firm that did my audit claims that removal of the toxic links while building some new links is imperative and that optimization for keywords can wait somewhat. Any thoughts?/ Thanks for your assistance. Alan

15 Keywords but only 8 visible on the page?
Hi we launched our site in June this year built using DNN - I have just used Moz's On page Grader for several pages and whilst it shows the KW in the URL, Titles, Meta Description, ALt Tag, it also says that I have 15 KWs in the body of this particular page and yet when i eye ball the page it only shows 8. Is this because of the templated navigation of the site. ie this KW also shows in the nav structure of other pages that are listed in the left hand nav menu? If this is correct will Google think that I am stuffing my page with too many KWs? Any solutions? Thanks Ash

Plural versions of keywords
I am a Magician and optimising my site for local seo mainly. I would imagine this will affect any local business but I woule like some input from the community on how to handle variations of the same keyword. e.g I am a Magician and I am based in Hampshire So I have created a page for Hampshire and from previous keyword research optimised it of Magician Hampshire. However there are many more variations of the keyword. e.g Magicians Hampshire, Magicians in Hampshire, Hampshire Magician, Magician in Hampshire, Close up Magicians in Hampshire, Hampshire Magicians, Magicians near Hampshire, Local Hampshire Magicians. The list goes on but I can not find an answer on wether I should have a separate page/blog post for each of these keywords or include them in the same page. If I include them in the same page how to not make it spammy I am sure this is the same for electricians, dentists, hairdressers etc so am hoping there is a common answer to a problem that has been puzzling me for a long time Many Thanks Roger

Google Places Drop
Hi everyone! I have a client that was ranking very nicely for a number of keywords. In the 5 pack for most of the keywords we were targeting. His account went under review for some unknown reason about 2 months ago. It disappeared from the listing... Then a few weeks ago it became approved again. He is now no longer ranking for any of those keywords. He is ranking for some obscure ones but the money words are gone. Do you think this was due to the review? Some sort of GP update over the last 60 days? All of my other clients are still ranking strong in Google Places. Any ideas?
