Hello folks :)...Is pop-up a good idea for city selection from SEO perspective?
-
I manage an e-commerce website which asks a new user for his/her city by throwing up a pop-up. Please check yourself by visiting www.furlenco.com.
Will this pop-up have any effect on the seo?
-
Hi Furseo
I would say that it has the potential to affect your SEO as you are not able to close the pop up without selecting a city. I do not live in any of the cities listed so I can't navigate your website. Google will penalise sites which it deems are obscured behind an intrusive pop up.
You can read more about interstitial ads and pop ups here: https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2016/08/helping-users-easily-access-content-on.html
If you want to ask then have a pop up that can be closed by the user. Having a sniffer on the site is not always a good idea as servers can be hosted in different locations to the user.
Kind Regards
Nigel

It should not have any effect on SEO. From a UX perspective you may want to see if you can just detect their location instead of interrupting their consumption of your site with a pop up.

Value of having a good crawl budget?
Hi, I've seen several questions where people give advice on how to increase the crawl budget. What I haven't seen anyone comment is what the value of this really is if you have many pages that doesn't get updated very often. Take for example the typical agency page - 50 pages, most of them rarely gets updates. In a monthly basis normally 10% of the website gets updated. Is there really any value then of having 100% of the website crawled on a daily basis?

Deleting 30,000 pages all at once - good idea or bad idea?
We have 30,000 pages that we want to get rid of. Each product within our database has it's own page. And these particular 30,000 products are not relevant anymore. They have very little content on them and are basically the same exact page but with a few title changes. We no longer want them weighing down our database so we are going to delete them. My question is - should we get rid of them in smaller batches like 2,000 pages at a time, or is it better to get rid of all them in one fell swoop? Which is least likely to raise a flag to Google? Anyone have any experience with this?

Google Dropping Pages After SEO Clean Up
I have been using SEOmoz to clear errors from a site. There
Technical SEO | | Andy56
were over 10,000 errors to start with. Most of these were duplicate content, duplicate titles and too many links on a page. Most of the duplicate errors have now been
cleared. This has been done in two weeks (down to around 3000 errors now). But instead of improving my rankings, pages that were on the second page of Google have started to drop out of the listings altogether. The pages that are dropping out
are not related to the duplicate problems and get A grades when I run SEOmoz
page reports. Can you clean up too much too quickly or is there likely to be another reason for it?0 -
How does a mega drop-down affects SEO?
We are looking at implementing a "mega drop-down" as our main menu on our website. Will that be good or bad for SEO? My company is a big tour operator so our website contains a lot of pages describing all our destinations, hotels etc. We have noticed that our visitors have some trouble to navigate to all this pages since it requires a lot of clicks to reach a specific page. In order to make this easier we have looked at this popular mega drop-down thing that we all love. But what about Google? Will Google love or hate us for doing this? An example showing what I mean by mega drop-down: http://www.phonehouse.se/

How Do You Balance Factors In Domain Selection?
Recently, there has been considerable discussion and debate about the value of choosing keyword-rich and exact-match domains. In a recent webmaster Q&A, Matt Cutts seems to suggest that google is planning on "turning down the dial" on keyword domain signals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAWFv43qubI How will these changes (if at all) impact your advice to clients on domain selection?
