How to fix a 404?
-
I had to delete a page of my site, now when I search for it I see it's showing a 404. How to I get that page to stop showing on Google?
Thank you in advance!

Hey There!,
Deleting a page of a site is always tricky, so I would always consider looking at other factors that may be causing this page to still show in Google results.
Firstly I would check the sitemap. The sitemap is an easy way to tell Google what pages you want indexed. I would remove the page in question from the sitemap if you haven't already, then I would log into Google Search Console and upload the new one. This should provide Google with a fresh new sitemap without the 404 Page hopefully preventing the page being indexed.
Another consideration when removing a page from the site, is to ensure there are no other sites still linking to that page, if Google can access your site from another page or another site, chances are it will index it.
For this I would implement a 301 re-direct to redirect users(and bots) visiting that page to a relevant equivalent.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Ian

Inventory Pages that are Sold, 404 vs 301?
I am working with a company that sells high-priced automobiles. Each Unit has its own URL We currently leave most sold inventory live on the site as it draws in many leads (the units are visually shown as sold, so it shouldn't be a UX issue in most cases). We are wanting to start pruning some old units (this is in WordPress - custom post type) and I'm not quite sure what the best solution for this site is with removed units. Some ideas: Remove the units pages that are no longer needed, resulting in any links 404'ing to a useful 404 page. Remove the units pages, and 301 them to the Homepage (I don't really want to do this, as it seems like really poor UX) Remove the units page, and 301 the user to a specific "This item has sold" page that is shared by all sold units, but may not be the sites full 404. another option I haven't thought of? I dont' want to do anything that would confuse or get search engines upset, and I'm not sure how bad 404's are, I see some info on how bad they are, some that say they aren't bad. I'm guessing it is as usual, some gray area in the middle.

Popup windows are coming up as 404 error in moz reports.
We have several links showing up as 404 errors because of the way our site is set up. I want to know if this is hurting our ranking because Google sees it as 404 errors or is it just something I can ignore because it works for the user? If it is hurting our quality and therefore our rankings, how can I correct it so that best practices are used? I have attached an image of the links and here is an example page --> http://www.sourcemedicalequipment.com/Perch-Polyurethane-Industrial-Stool-18-25-p/idst2.htm The links in the description section have anchor text "All 3 Choices" and result in a popup information page. If you cut and paste the URL's that they are redirecting to end in a 404 but if you use the link on the page it results in a popup information window. Hope I explained that well. Thanks for your help! wrEmQnwWQo

Should I fix 302 redirects?
I have a Magento ecommerce site that allows customers to compare products. When SEOmoz crawled the site, it came back with over 6,000 302 redirect errors related to the compare products feature. Is this harming our rankings? And any suggestions on the best way to fix it?

How do I fix a 404 with a 301
I understand the need for fixing 404's but I have yet to have a serious walkthrough of how to set up a 301. From all the talk on the forums and such I'm pretty sure this is easy but I've just never done it before and I could really use a walk through. Thanks
