Hi guys,

We're noticing a few alternate hostnames for a website rearing their ugly heads in search results and I was wondering how everyone else handles them. For example, we've seen:
- alt-www.(domain).com
- test.(domain).com
- uat.(domain).com
We're looking to ensure that these versions all canonical to their live page equivalent and we're adding meta robots noindex nofollow to all pages as an initial measure. Would you recommend a robots.txt crawler exclusion to these too?

Hi, no don't add the crawler exclusion as this will not prevent Google from indexing them, but it will prevent Google from seeing the no-index and canonicals tags (seeing as it won't crawl the pages anymore).

Hundreds of Subdomains under a powerful domain

Hello, I own a domain FeedsPortal - com As you can see from the link profile, it has some fantastic referring domains and links. Because of this, it has a DA of 86, with a good CF/TF. The problem is that nearly all of these powerful links are for the sub domains under the main domain. For example, it has a link on this page on MSN... https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/offbeat/finland-home-of-the-dollar103000-speeding-ticket/ar-AA9GA9i?ocid=ansAtlantic11 On this MSN article, it has a link to http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheAtlantic/~3/PK4bw0Tkkps/story01.htm (a link under Google.com), which then forwards to my domain under a sub domain http://theatlantic.feedsportal.com/c/34375/f/..... I have many hundreds of sub domains like this. I have a feeling redirecting all non-existent sub domains to the homepage would be a bad idea for SEO. Does anyone else see of a way to do this without harming my SEO? I suppose the only way to do it properly would be to write articles about each subdomain. For example, http://theatlantic.feedsportal.com, write an article about The Atlantic, then forward all traffic meant for theatlantic.feedsportal.com to feedsportal.com/10-reasons-why-the-atlantic-is-great/ Does anyone else have an idea of how to at least get a list of the non-existant sub domains that have links so I can maybe create articles for each sub domain? Or is there a simpler way to do this. Thanks!

Domain Authority

Hi I wanted to find out if anyone knew how to discover why DA may have dropped? Ours has gone from 26 to 25 - I know it's not much, but I wanted to find the reason. One thing which happened was our developer company wiped redirects, which did impact rankings - would this also have affected domain authority or do I need to review our backlinks again? Thank you

Single domain or a subfolder?

One of my clients is wondering whether they should move they stand alone business website to a subfolder of their brand website. For example, from http://www.johnlewisforbusiness.com to http://www.johnlewis.com/business. Do you guys think it's a good idea from SEO point of view? Can you recommend any articles on this? What is the expected loss of current value by changing domain and migrating URLs?

Old links showing on new domain

Last year we incurred a Google penalty and after months of trying the clean up the link profile with no joy we relaunched the site with a .org rather than .co.uk Now the issue is that 2 weeks after the launch GWMT is showing all the old links pointing to the new url. We didn't do a redirect of any kind, just changed the url Why is this????

Multi domain redirect to single domain

Hello, all SEOers. Today, I would like to get some ideas about handling multiple domains. I have a client who bought numerous domains under purpose of prevent abuse of their brand name and at the same time for future uses. This client bought more than 100 domains. Some domains are paused, parked, lived and redirected to other site. I don't worry too much of parked domains and paused domains. However, what I am worrying is that there are about 40 different domains are now redirected to single domain and meta refresh was used for redirections. As far as I know, this can raise red flag for Google. I asked clients to clean up unnecessary domains, yet they want to keep them all. So now I have to figure out how to handle all domains which are redirect to single domain. So far, I came up with following ideas. 1. Build gateway page which shows lists of my client sites and redirect all domains to gateway page. 2. Implement robots.txt file to all different domains 3. Delete the redirects and leave it as parked domains. Could anyone can share other ideas in order to handling current status? Please people, share your ideas for me.

Rel=alternate to help localize sites

I am wondering about the efficiency of the rel=alternate tag and how well it works at specifically localizing content. Example: I have a website on a few ccTLD's but for some reason my .com shows up on Google.co.uk before my .co.uk version of my page. Some people have mentioned using rel=alternate but in my research this only seems to be applicable for duplicate content in another language. If I am wrong here can somebody please help me better understand this application of the rel=alternate tag. All my research leads me to rel=alternate hreflang= and I am not sure that is what I want. How to move website to new domain?

We have a website that has run under the same domain name for the past 10 years. We have built up a decent amount of SEO "mojo" (and traffic) over time, however, the original domain name no longer applies to the business model. A little over 1 year ago we started using a new brand name for the website and created a landing page for that domain name. Everything on that landing page links over to pages on the original domain name (to preserve the SEO value that we have built up over the years). We would like to move all (or most) of the pages/content to the new domain name. Would using 301 redirects be the safest, most effective way of doing this? I have heard of other people doing it this way, and often they will see their traffic drop for a few weeks before it eventually comes back. Anyone else had experience with this? What worked? What didn't? Thanks!
