Migrating Magento site to Shopify Plus without dropping in SERPS
-
We have been looking at moving our ecommerce store www.pretavoir.co.uk from Magento to Shopify Plus. However, as we rank quite well at present we are interested in hearing experience others may have had making this change and also any advice that you may have... Also, any general comments on Shopify appreciated..

Hi Sean,
I can certainly empathise with your experience - Magento is definitely more complicated to set-up and customise initially. And for a little background, I worked on the early versions of WooCommerce with the original developers, so I understand why there has been a need for simpler, more effective eCommerce solutions.
With Magento, the key is to find developers and agencies/consultants who have experience with it. Like any platform, it's much easier when you know it well, but often we don't have time to spend learning before we're earning. I've worked on 2-3 fairly big Magento sites now, and can get stuff done reasonably quickly and cost-effectively, but it's never quite as fast as with Shopify or WooCommerce (although knowing some Magento specialists makes a big difference).
This article about a large company moving to Shopify sums it up - from the article it's clear they had appalling developers, but used that as the reason to switch platforms (http://elumynt.com/magento-to-shopify-plus-complete-guide-for-large-retailers/). I can't blame them for it when it was costing them money and business, but it's pretty clear it's a dev issue...
And Shopify isn't bad for what it is. If you're looking for something that is more plug-and-play, it'll do the job.
The problem is always that you're limited by what's available. So if what you need hasn't been created/verified/approved, you're basically stuck. From memory, a team I know have put together some SEO solutions for Shopify so will try and dig it out.
With regards to any migration - if it's done properly, you shouldn't lose rankings. I've moved tens of thousands of pages across domains and CMS platforms etc, and had minimal drops if any. Usually the new platform etc has been rolled out to improve things, so it often leads to a gain even if everything else stays the same, just because the new set-up is faster etc. The key is to plan out the switch very carefully and with plenty of time to check, double check and triple check - 301 redirects, .htaccess and robots.txt files are the essentials

Hi Dan
From my experience of Magento is a dog for development with a minefield of conflicts to negotiate for small changes, making progress slow and costly. It is also quite server hungry whereas Shopify is hosted by them and another headache removed. I like the concept of properly vetted plugins, centralised updates etc. From what I can see it is a platform that just works, that allows you to get on with looking after your customers rather than a IT department.

I'd be interesting in why you're planning to move from Magento - you tend to find most people graduate up to Magento from Shopify or WooCommerce as their inventory and business grows.
So I'd usually suggest actually improving the Magento install unless you're looking to radically simplifying your business and product lines and won't be looking for the in-depth functionality that Magento offers...

Few Specific Migration Questions
Hi Everyone, We are about ready to do the migration for our website. I've done smaller migrations in the past, but this is a $5 million+ site. We are moving from Magento to Shopify (same domain, different hosting). I read the Moz migration guide, which was great. Any tips from you guys on things that you might have missed when doing a migration? I've Got... All url redirects completed All legacy redirects completed All image url redirects completed All meta data/content moved over It was recommended that I submit the old site's XML Sitemap to Google when the new site goes live so I can get all the redirects indexed. Do you just create an XML sitemap from the old site and upload it to the new site or how is that done? Is there anything from a server/hosting standpoint I need to watch out for? I am using Screaming Frog for the old site to record all data. I was also thinking about Deep Crawl. Any other tools that helped you with your migration? We have many pages that are www.domain.com/page.html?p=2 for example that is a page 2 of a category. Do these need to be redirected as well? Thank you!

Site is getting crushed by spam traffic and Google Webmaster Tools giving crawl warnings. Also...
Currently hosting a site I'm planning on moving to a new server ASAP, 301 redirecting and have a domain that has nice authority and very old. On the current site I need to clean up the blog. I have a few questions actually.... 1. I'd like to remove most of the blog articles as I want the new site to be very high quality, but isn't it dangerous to do a 301 redirect to the same page for all these articles? 2. I want to focus on the new site as the current site has too many issues but still managing to hang in their. is highly outdated yet I don't want to spend a ton of time on the site before the 301 redirect. With the Pigeon and Panda 4.0 rumors being released soon, I want to get the new site completed ASAP. Do you think it's better if I fix the 3. Would removing cloudflare make things better or worse with the crashing of my site due to high traffic (mainly spam on the blog.) 4. My best article by far is outdated, but should I waste time updating it before redirecting or should I just get the new site going? I did way too many guest posts thinking content is king, but at least checked the outgoing links Domain Auth, Page Auth, and MozTrust in OSE, but first off I'm going to remove a page that mentions I'm looking for guest bloggers. I tried to keep the posts relevant but at the time you could get away with 5. Anything I can do to slow down these spammers on Wordpress? I noticed most of them are checking for vulnerabilities but I'm keeping it up to date, have caching setup. Thanks!

The impact of using directories without target keyword on our Rankings
Hello all, I have a question regarding a website I am working on. I’ve read a lot of Q en A’s but couldn’t really find the best answer. For one of our new websites we are thinking about the structure of this website and the corresponding URL-structure. Basically we have a main product (and a few main keywords) which should drive the most traffic to our website, and for which we want to optimize our homepage. Besides those main keywords, we have an enormous base of long-tail keywords from which we would like to generate traffic. This means we want to create a lot of specific pages which are optimized. My main question is the following: We are thinking of two options: Option 1: www.example.com/example-keyword-one Option 2: www.example.com/directory/example-keyword-one With option 1 we will link directly from our homepage to the most important pages (which represent our most important keywords). All the pages with the long tail content will be linked from another section on our website, which is one click away from our homepage (specifically a /solutions page which is linked from the footer). All the pages with long-tail content will have this structure www.example.com/example-keyword-one so the URLs will not contain the directory /solutions With option 2 we will use more subdirectories in our URLs. Specifically, for all the long tail content we would use URLs like this: www.example.com/solutions/example-keyword-one

The directories we want to use wouldn't really have added value in terms of SEO, since they don’t represent important keywords. So what is the best way to go? Option 1, straightforward, short URL’s which don’t really represent the linking structure of our website, but only contain important keywords. Or option 2, choose for more directories in our URLs which represent the linking structure of our website, but contain directories which don’t represent important keywords. Would the keyword ‘solutions’ in the directory (which doesn’t really relate to the content on the page) have a negative impact on our rankings for that URL?0 -
Joomla! Site Returning 12000+ Duplicate Content Errors! W Image
(I do award "Good Answer" and "thumbs up" to responses as earned) I have tried to ask this question previously (maybe not correctly). I have a client that I am doing the on and offsite optimization and the MOZ report is kicking back major errors. I have examples below. They all seem to relate directly to rokecwid and ECWID. Is there ANY solution to fix this? Is this hurting the rankings Since I didn't build the site, I am having to tell the website company what to do when I need changes made to code, etc... I am also not very proficient with Joomla! and my web engineer is one of those closet coders (the best kind to have) and doesn't communicate in a way that a "layman" could understand. He pointed out several issues with the HTML but I don't think that is related to this below. Can anyone tell me what to tell the web company that built this site to get rid of these errors? A very small sample of the urls w errors:

Website Redesign - Will it hurt SERP?
Hi - I am planning to redesign my blog and I was wondering if this will affect my rankings? The new website template (custom designed) is much more user and seo friendly. The content, url structure, internal linking structure, meta tags, and site structure will remain exactly the same, but the visual design will be different (new sidebar widgets, and slightly different layout on inner pages). The current website is ranking very well (mostly top 5), has a healthy backlink profile, strong social media presence, and great traffic. I have heard that switching to a new template will dramatically hurt the rankings. Is this true? Are there any exceptions? Any ways I can prevent the rankings from dropping? Would really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance. Howard

Best Site navigation solution
Hi there, We are getting our website redesigned and would like to know whether to increase the links on our site wide navigation or not. At the moment we have around 30 links from the navigation. We want to use exploding navigation menu and increase the links to our most important categories. Say if we increase to 60-70 would that be alright. (what will be the highest we can go for) At the moment categories that get links from navigation are ranking pretty good. If we increase would we loose those rankings. What will be the pros and cons of increasing navigation links? Second question we are also adding fooer links to top 10 categories in the footer. Would this be ok as far as seo and google concerned. Many Thanks
