How to find out related keywords? e.g. business = commercial
-
I'm trying to get savvy with our homepage H1.
Is there a website which can give us information on related keywords. For example, although we don't mention 'business', we do mention 'commercial' and thus our site will come up in search for the term 'business <x><x>'.</x></x>
So in essence, there's little point keywording both 'business' and 'commercial' as to Google they are one in the same keyword.
Thanks

Hi,
SemRush will analyse your full page that is optimised for that keyword and scan Google results that compete when it comes to that keyword. It will suggest how to optimise your content and list all words that are desirable in the copy. It will also suggest where to get backlinks from.
If your want to manually generate semantically related words, there is a number of tools, for example semantic-link.com - it will be a manual process of selection for you as there might be many generated and only a few will suit you.
Hope this helps a bit.

Igor has recommended some of the best tools.
However, I would keep an eye on whether the site still works for related terms if they're important. Although it's widely accepted that Google understands synonyms etc, I've seen countless examples where it fails. For instance, ranking a site differently for even an alternative spelling as widely accepted as e-commerce and ecommerce.
Rather than relying on Google to understand the related terms you want to appear for, I'd use the tools to pick up on the related words which you should actually be trying to use. For example, I'd be using commercial, business and B2B etc, rather than assuming Google (or any search engine) will pick up on one also meaning the others.

1. Serpstat's "cluster research" feature: http://i.imgur.com/WX1Xd8K.jpg
2. Ahrefs' "Also rank for" feature. Works similarly, saw it in Tim Soulo's presentation.
3. MOZ Keyword Explorer. I didn't have a chance to use it much, but it provides these results in Keywords Suggestions.

Hyphens in Keyword
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any experience of whether Google treats keywords with hyphens differently. One of my websites main keywords is 'buy to let', however all across our website it is referred to as 'buy-to-let'. People always search without the hyphens. I recently heard that Google may only treat us as a highly relevant match and not an exact match for this keyword. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this, and what is the best course of action to take. Thanks

Keyword explorer
Hello, I was trying the keyword explore and got some questions : I first used it with all the search terms for the keyword "italy bike tours" and came across terms like this one "tuscany bike tours florence italy" Does it mean I have to include this exact expression in my content or do I just need to include somewhere in my content the words tuscany and florence ? Then I did the same search but this time with closely related keywords and the keyword explorer give me the word "pasticceria" or "tirrenia" are being closely related to the keyword italy bike ... How does the keyword explorer find those words because I don't see how those can be related... If someone could explain that would be awesome. Thank you,

Plural versions of keywords
I am a Magician and optimising my site for local seo mainly. I would imagine this will affect any local business but I woule like some input from the community on how to handle variations of the same keyword. e.g I am a Magician and I am based in Hampshire So I have created a page for Hampshire and from previous keyword research optimised it of Magician Hampshire. However there are many more variations of the keyword. e.g Magicians Hampshire, Magicians in Hampshire, Hampshire Magician, Magician in Hampshire, Close up Magicians in Hampshire, Hampshire Magicians, Magicians near Hampshire, Local Hampshire Magicians. The list goes on but I can not find an answer on wether I should have a separate page/blog post for each of these keywords or include them in the same page. If I include them in the same page how to not make it spammy I am sure this is the same for electricians, dentists, hairdressers etc so am hoping there is a common answer to a problem that has been puzzling me for a long time Many Thanks Roger

Effect of 301 redirect to a relative url to homepage?
One of our new clients recently encountered a site-wide ranking drop for many keywords and I'm pretty confident regarding their link profile as to being 98% legit. Background: 1. Client full site is https, and all http pages are 301 redirected to their https counterpart 2. Client has ~50 links partners (all legitimate sites + schools etc) links to client with urls such as www.example.com/portal/123.aspx that redirects to www.example.com. 3. Client homepage 301 redirects from www.example.com to www.example.com/default.aspx and then 301 redirects to the relative url "/Home.aspx". 4. Client launched some testing with Google website optimizer tool. ~1-2 months ago. Symptoms: 1. Rankings dropped for basically many/all 30-40+ keywords by ~15 positions 2. Seomoz reports close to a double of existing pages + (600+) duplicate content in the same date range. Webmasters only report 80 duplicate titles though. 3. Domain authority by seomoz reduced a bit + backlinks recorded by seomoz to the website nearly halved in the past 2 months. I'm not sure if I narrowed this towards the right direction, and it isn't clear when the relative url 301 redirect was implemented: 1. The 301 redirect to the relative page (www.example.com/default.aspx to "/home.aspx") is accounting for the loss of links recorded by seomoz. 2. The ~50 links the client currently use (www.example.com/portal.123.aspx 301 redirecting to www.example.com, also relative) as a tracking tool is being considered 301 redirect abuse. 3. Maybe something went wrong with the usage of google optimizer tool for SEO purposes? Visitor traffic to each of the tested pages looked fine. I would greatly appreciate any advice/insights on what I might be missing in terms of direction / factors. Thanks! Alex

2 Year Old Keyword Focused Site Will Not Rank for Keyword
Hi All, I need your help. This site is confounding me. The site is turnstilefactory.com It's a few years old. Strong domain name and seo focused on the term 'turnstile'. In bound links are not abundant, but certainly not absent either. Considering the subject matter, content and competition in the space, I would expect this site by now to at least be in the top 10 pages for the search 'turnstile', but it's not. I've tried everything I can think of with this, but it just won't rank for anything other than it's domain name. Can anyone please take a look and let me know if they see something I'm missing? It would be appreciated. Thanks.

How to find the number of DoFollow links on the homepage
Dear SEOmozzers, I just have a quick question. Can you please tell me how I can find out how many DoFollow links I have on the page of a site? I did a link exchange with a person who claims that she found 50+ DoFollow links on my homepage. How did she do that? What tool did she use to find out the number of DoFollow links on my homepage? Thank you. Sal

Sudden rank drop for 1 keyword
A page of mine (http://loginhelper.com/networks/facebook-login/) was ranking in the top 10 for keyword (facebook login) and has been for at least 2 months, moving between 5th and 10th. Suddenly in the last 3 days the rank for the keyword dropped from 7th to 46th, yet none of the other keywords have been affected (they target other pages) and their ranks have continued to improve. I am trying to figure out what caused this sudden drop in the ranking of 1 page (the page has quality mainly text based content and isn't in the least bit shallow or spammy) I have been thinking perhaps a crawl or server error may be to cause leaving the page temporarily unavailable or with a big load time... Otherwise what could cause one page to drop so much so quickly whilst other pages improved their rank?
