Setting a total monthly spend limit for the Adwords account
-
Hi,
I manage a number of campaigns and even though I keep an eye on daily budget based on our monthly budget, I freak out thinking we would waste a lot more money accidentally.
Is there a way how I can set a cap for the whole Adwords account so I will not go over, even if I leave daily campaign budgets on crazy amounts?
Thanks.
Regards,
Katarina

Hi Katarina,
All the answers above are good suggestions. However, all that depends on the location and your industry and economic situation.
Here are my few quick tips what I have learned managing both campaigns over the period of 24 months with budget of 500.000£
One, there is a real difference between campaigns with the traffic being sent to the websites and website aka landing pages with no navigation with one form only something like Unbounce pages. Campaigns with CRO orientated landing pages ( no navigation) like Unbouce were converting much more compared to the campaigns with the traffic being sent to the regular website ( users were able to explore the whole website). What I have learned from that is that you can have on both campaigns a cap on how much you could spend but the same daily amount (daily cap) performed completely different. Campaign with traffic to the general website with navigation needed a minimum daily threshold after ( minimum amount required to be passed) which I have started seeing conversions - so having them limited by daily budget was a real threat to the conversions.
That being said we removed the daily cap for another reason.
We have seen the days ie. Wednesdays where you could spend twice as much on average and have just about some conversions. Comparing that with weekends = two days you could spend the same amount but no conversion at all. That means no days equal the same amount of daily cap as some of them may have traffic spikes.
This is why I am against having a daily cap as long as you really know your particular market. For us having such a bid data turned out to be a real advantage and we were able (based on data) find specific patterns such as conversion by an hour and days.
Taking this further we were bidding on the expensive keywords 15£ per click for the last 12 months having them in an exact match only. We were then able to figure out on average how much we really have to spend - how many clicks to have a conversion which turned out to be 10- 7 clicks.
And yes for your information we have had a daily cap which on average was burned out around 4 pm (unfortunately for enough long time) only to find out that later that our best conversion time was 6-9 pm. I have learned this leaving the daily cap off.
Again that being said we were able to find out all of these insights only by not limiting the daily cap. Some days had 3 times more total impressions and therefore more demand, and therefore more budget was required. Having that in mind I advise you to keep track of daily impressions weekly and monthly and rather than by clicks - measure your impact by a number of conversions per number of impressions in a given day week and month.
Last but not least I haven't detected much of click fraud, but I have installed click guardian on our Unbounce Landing pages. That allowed us to set 2 clicks only from the same IP per day. You can also compare all the conversions coming from specific IP and compare all of them with Click Guardian data.
I can agree with advice being given on the internet by only in case if they are extremely obvious. I have met people from PPC agencies running campaigns with no Click fraud protection, and that is no brainer so, in this case, such advice of having Click Fraud solution is obviously valid at any point of your campaign because if not you can end up having one user clicking 5 times within one day costing you in our case 15£ x 5 =75£ So if your daily cap is 75£ per day what you learning from data is completely nothing.
Hope that helps a little bit

Thanks James. I have a daily budget and I'm very careful about it, but I freak out sometimes. Just thinking it would just go mad so I wanted to have something above the daily budget if possible.
Thanks.

Hi,
Do you know where I can set up the auto email to be triggered by the max spend?
Thanks.

Hi Katarina,
You could setup an automated rule to send you an email when the account reaches a certain amount spend in each month. but that would leave you to pause the campaigns manually. Or you could implement a script to automatically pause the campaigns when a specific amount spend in the account is reached and to restart at the beginning of the month. PPC Hero has more information on this here http://www.ppchero.com/advanced-adwords-budget-script/
Hope this helps

No, you need to cap daily budget. If you haven't done so, I would suggest implementing an attribution framework to see what traffic is converting and what is not. So, you can eliminate the waste and allocate more to the campaigns driving the conversions. Good luck!

Adwords Ad disapproved - Banned product on Site (glutamine)?
We are starting to get ads disapproved. One yesterday, one today. The reason - banned supplement 'glutamine'. Neither of these ads were for glutamine so I assume it's because l-glutamine is sold on the site. The actual ad for l-glutamine landing on the l-glutamine page has not been disapproved? In 2012 Google informed us the glutamine was no longer on the banned list so I'm not sure what's going on here? Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there a solution apart from removing the product entirely?

Adwords Expanded Text Ads - How are they working for you?
I think it would be nice to get a consensus from more people. The day expanded text ads came out last week, I immediately jumped on it and created them for all my campaigns. I still left some of the old ads running in each ad group so that I could compare. Looking at the conversion data from the last week, the conversion rates are between 2-7x lower on the expanded text ads, and as a result, the cost per conversion is 2-5x higher as well. Basically, they're performing horribly. The click-through rate is mildly higher, but who cares if they're not converting? I know it's only a week's worth of data, but it seems the difference is enough to be statistically significant. I'm wording what everyone else's experience has been.

Adwords - Mobile Checkbox
Hi Everyone, I am looking to optimize my adwords campaigns and have been pondering how to handle the checkbox for "Mobile" on the standard Text Ads. (My ecommerce website is fully responsive.) If i want to create 1 Ad for each ad group and have that ad displayed on desktops as well as mobile devices, should i be checking the "Mobile" checkbox? Is it best practice to create 2 ads per ad group that are identical except have 1 with Mobile checked and 1 without? Please let me know how you guys typically set this up. Thanks

Have you used an ad network other than Google Adwords?
We received a cold call from a company called Division-D. They make a lot of promises which sound good (but that's what marketers do 🙂 ). Advertising on a non-Google network probably would have fewer restrictions than an Adwords campaign and they say that they are fully transparent. Would it be worth it to listen to their whole pitch?

Redirecting AdWords Display URLs
I feel it's a best practice (from a user experience POV) to create a 301redirect when using a fictitious display URL in your PPC ads. And according to the AdWords help page (http://support.google.com/adwordspolicy/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=175906&rd=2) Google doesn't have an issue using a redirect. "Redirects used for tracking purposes are fine as long as the final landing page has the same domain as the display URL." I'm curious if there is ad score penalty if one does not ionclude a redirect - i.e. the user types in your display URL and gets a 404. Has anyone seen an evidence of this?

How much does Google adwords cost increase year to year?
I am trying to find about how much the cost of Pay-Per-Click increases year to year? If anyone can point me to some data/study that speaks to this I would appreciate it very much.

Adwords Product Listing Ads & Google Analytics mis-reporting
I hope you're sitting comfortably, this could be a long one and loaded with questions! Cut to the chase: Why is traffic from google product ads showing as 'organic' traffic in GA? Here's the scenario: Google Shopping I have thousands of products in a feed to google shopping (froogle, google base, google merchant, whatever you like to call it, I'll settle for google shopping for the purpose of this question). The URLs of this feed is tagged with GA tracking data (notably utm_source=GoogleBase&utm_medium=Product-Search), I have also tagged this with internal tracking which comes through in the back-end to assign orders to that specific source. In this case 'GOOGLEBASE'. Adwords Product Listing Ads As you know, a new (ish) feature of adwords pulls in your products from google shopping so that you get a richer ad (image, title, price) and displays this in the 'advert section' of the SERP. Once setting up a few of these, I noticed I was getting a fair amount of traffic for these new ads, taking one example, which resided in a relatively specific ad group (advertising Aviation Snips). Naturally, I wanted to find out which keywords were driving that traffic in order to improve the ads, or kill them if they weren't working. What was interesting is that I can't find anything about that traffic anywhere in adwords or google analytics. 254 clicks to 'aviation snips' must show up somewhere in analytics, if not the keywords, then what about the product? Analytics is showing nothing like that quantity of visits to those product landing pages where you'd expect. It's like ghost traffic. Google Analytics Since experimenting with product listing ads the organic traffic in GA has suddenly shot up, looking at the new keywords they are all queries which when I test them show up product listing ads in the SERP so it's obviously the paid listing ads driving this traffic. Why is google reporting these as organic, rather than paid? I also noticed a keyword appear as * in the PAID segment of analytics. I thought this was my missing aviation snips traffic, but digging into the landing pages for the * keyword, they are many different ones. There's a connection between the * and product listing ads, but what is it? Is the traffic being doubly reported? Back End Meanwhile we've seen an increase for orders tagged in the back-end of GOOGLEBASE which makes sense - google are pulling in my google shopping feed into the paid part of the SERPs and these are generating sales. Here are some of my initial thoughts / theories: 1. When google pulls in google shopping results into the organic part of the SERP, these get reported as ORGANIC in google analytics, even if you've tagged them otherwise. It seems they strip the tags out. This makes it very difficult to know if your google shopping feed is working well, or if you are doing well on standard organic traffic. 2. Google isn't separating out traffic as PAID with their new product listing ads, completely skewing the reports. It makes it look like you've gained great natural organic listings when if fact you are paying. 3. With relation to the missing Aviation Snips data - maybe google is showing a huge variety of products for that adgroup (even though it's specific) and therefore I can't see the traffic to the specific products that you'd expect. This I'm most confused about and wondered if I've missed a trick in setting the product listing ads up? I've attached a couple of screenshots which I hope will help clarify some of this. I can see product listing ads being great if you could get proper data to analyse and improve them. So here are my questions again if anyone can help? How do I see which keywords are driving the product listing ads? How do I see the landing pages for the product listings ads? What is the * keyword coming through in GA? How can you get GA to report product listing ads as paid rather than organic? Thank you so much. If I can gather enough data on this all and work it out I'll try to write up in a blog post to help others. 0rOMM.png GUAE0.png fWPL7.png
