Does optimization of PDF files for search matter in 2017? If yes, what is the optimal way to do it? Is there a risk that it will compete for rankings with the parent page that is it's linked to?

Documents can be for instance pages, images or PDF files.

PDF SEO in short
Just like your website’s pages, you can optimize PDF files
for search engine findability. Keep the following things in
mind when doing so:- Choose a SEO friendly filename.
- Define a good title and description.
- Use headings and include relevant outgoing links.
- Make sure they don’t cause duplicate content issues.
- Don’t save PDF files as images.
- Optimize for mobile and file size.

Hi Scratch_MM,
Yes optimising for pdf´s still matters and follow some specific optimization rules, You can find a great post about this on SEJ https://www.searchenginejournal.com/pdf-seo-best-practices/59975/.
In relation to competing with the parent page, the pdf is just another page and as such eligble for ranking dependent on the content. If the pdf contains the same content as the parent page than it would be better to use a canonical to the parent page. Otherwise its will compete as much as normal pages would do, based on there content.
Hope this helps

Big discrepancy between search volume and actual traffic
I've been seeing this more and more... a page that ranks well for a great keyword but the traffic is much, much less than one would expect based on information from the Google Keyword Tool. The keyword gets 3600 searches locally, but the site, #9 on the SERP, got 11 visits last month. Does that sound like a plausible drop-off or is there something else at play? Thanks!

A good rule of thumb for competition and local searches when selecting keywords
I'm doing keyword research in the Google Keyword Tool and was looking and spending a lot of time looking at keyword competition and local searches. I'm trying to determine what is a good rule of thumb for what level of competition and local searches people have used when selecting the keywords they will optimize for. I've currently been trying to find ones that have less than 50% (moderate) competition and less than 1,000 monthly searches. Also, which do you put more weight on the competition or the number of searches.

Optimizing two site pages for the same keyword phrase
If a keyword works really well for two pages on your site, is it OK to optimize both pages for that keyword? Is it possible that Google will rank both pages? For example, one of the companies I've worked with is a software developer. They want to use the keyword phrase “simple project management software” for both the home page http://www.wennsoft.com/ and for the product page http://www.wennsoft.com/en/Solutions/By-Products/projectmanagement.aspx. (I’ve got other alternatives that I can use, but optimizing both pages for the same keyword would be the path of least resistance).
