Summary of Anchor Text and Hash Tags
-
This a summary of my understanding of anchor text and hash tags, along with a question. I'm looking for confirmation of my assumptions and an answer to the question. Here we go:
- Given these two links on a page in order, Google will use the anchor text "first"
a) First
b) a) Second
- Given these two links on a page in order, Google will use the anchor text "Second"
a) First
b) Second
- Given these three links on a page in order, Google will use the anchor text "Second" and "Third"
a) First
b) Second
c) Third
Is this consistent with your understanding of using hash tags to get around the first link rule?
Here's my question:
If I have the following 4 links on a page, does 50% of the link juice go to Page A and 50% to Page B; OR 25% to Page A and 75% to page B; OR something else?
www.example.com/Page-B.html#anchor1
www.example.com/Page-B.html#anchor2
www.example.com/Page-B.html#anchor3
Thanks in advance.

First of all, great question. The problem is that anchor text optimization isn't tested nearly enough by search engine professionals, and that Google evolves quickly, so it's hard to know what the best practice is or what benefits can be gained by this type of tweaking.
To address your individual examples, there is conflicting evidence.
1. This is correct
2. This experiment showed that both anchors would count in this example. But this experiment showed the opposite as did this one - indicating Google would index both anchors
3. A similar situation with this example. My best guess is all anchors would count, but it's hard to say.
There are some nuances in your question worth exploring. We can't really say how Google will flow link juice through these 4 links. (my pure guess is that pure PageRank will be spread equal among the 2, but this is only speculation.) But more importantly, there are other factors that will determine the value of these links, including:
- Position on the page - Links higher up tend to pass more weight than links further down
- Navigation vs. Content links - Where links placed in the body of context carry more weight than boilerplate (repeated links)
- Context of the links. For example, a link contained within an advertising block may not carry very much weight.
- And more... This article by Rand lays it out pretty good.
These factors have the potential to far outweigh traditional PageRank sculpting techniques you may consider. It's a fascinating area of study, and I hope we can quantify it better in the future with more experimentation.

Multiple H1s and Header Tags in Hero/Banner Images
I work on education websites, and our sites are being flagged by SEO and accessibility checkers for having multiple H1s. The home pages have the site name as an h3 in the hero image, and an aspirational headline (think: Be Like Mike) as an H1. The sub-pages have two H1s: one on the site name in the banner image, and the other on the page title. Note that the site name is very keyword-rich. If we were to remove the H1 and H3 tags from the hero/banner images, would it do any SEO harm? At the same time, we’d rewrite the H1 on the home page to be more keyword-focused. Any other options? I also read that it’s OK to have multiple H1s as long as it’s clear which H1 belongs to the heading area and which one belongs to the body area of the page. Thanks in advance!

Is this still considered true about INTERNAL anchor text? "Penguin seems to be targeting overly aggressive anchor text (both internally and externally), especially from low-quality sources."
Recently I've heard a few people say now it's okay to be aggressive with internal linking. So a link from mydomain.com/news to mydomain/widgets can use spammy anchor text like "best green widgets in California" that are an obvious problem for links coming in from external site. Which is accurate?

IMG ALT tags - should they be the same or the product title?
I have about 300 products. Should I make all my IMG ALT tags with my keywords, such as sea glass jewelry, sea glass necklace, sea glass bracelets? Or, should I make them what their title is, some of which do not pertain to the keyword, such as By the Sea. Some of my products do have keywords in them, but not all. I am hesitant on changing all the titles, as almost all URLs are indexed.

Title Tags for Index Pages
What tactics do you use to change the title tags of your index page so they're not all the same? For example, if you have an index page that has 100 pages, each with the same title, what tactics do you use to give each page a unique title and how important is it?

SERPs Showing H1s Instead of Title Tags?
Hi, I'm noticing two strange things in search results recently. Often I find that if I search for a client's company name, I see just the company name in SERPs where the title tag would normally be displayed. Examples: 'aci northwest' 'lanz heating' As strange as that is, I'm tempted to assume this is just Google's way of "getting smarter" and showing more relevant results (though I'm not sure exactly where it's pulling from). But it gets stranger. For the first example, 'aci northwest', when search that key phrase on Bing/Yahoo!, etc. I'm not only not seeing the title tag where it would normally be, but I'm seeing the H1 in it's place: "When your projects demand more, demand ACI." Any idea what's happening here? Thanks in advance!

Only showing googlebot schema.org tagged content - cloaking??
Would it be considered cloaking if I only show schema.or tagged content to searchengine bots and not to regular visitors. Mind you, no other change on the page, design or content. So instead of Googlebot would be served: 41 Main Street Regular visitors: 41 Main Street
