Where should I centre my content Hubs?
-
I look after a manufacturing site which has a well structured architecture when it comes to our products. There is also a benefits section and an about section.
In addition to managing the three main information sections I've also been setting up a blog with topical content divided into four categories (Built environment, Secondary glazing in practice, Treat of the month, Project profile).
My question is, where do I position my content hubs? Having worked through Cyrus's 'How to Rank 25 Step Master SEO Blueprint', I've realized that my approach of simply linking back to main top level pages is at best arbitrary, at worst negative in terms of SEO.
Would I be better off asking our designers to set up category landing pages within the blog that relevant new copy can be linked to (currently the blog is just set up without category landing pages and I categorize each post with a tag that is used to sort the posts into their respective location on the blogs homepage? Currently the blog is an option on the main sites top level navigation and I link relevant blog pieces to relevant areas within the site.
Basically I'm struggling to understand how to implement Cyrus's recommendation to create themes with my current website structure. Can anyone help?
Thanks Mozers

Hi Catherine
The problem with setting up tags and categories within your blog is that the content will likely conflict with the main categories on your website.
Sure, so that from a user point of view but I would advise you noindex/follow them so that you don't have them appear in Google but link juice is allowed to flow through the pages.
When you post it is perfectly OK and good for SEO, to link to internal pages using anchor text. Just be aware that if there is already a link to those pages in the main menu then your efforts will be thwarted as Google only reads the first anchor to a page it comes to. If that is in the menu then your link on the page will be largely ignored.
Backlinks from blog pages and of course other forms of internal linkage strengthens the whole site in term of allowing link juice to flow through all connected pages.
Don't think of it as arbitrary linking or negative for SEO. Do think of linking to pages that are two or more clicks down, so that they will not have a main link in the menu.
I repeat - if you do set up categories and tags in the blog then noindex/follow them as they will produce low grade/skinny pages.
Regards
Nigel

Content optimisation or Link Building first? Small clients & small budgets
Hi there. Apologies in advance for this long message! I have come from a large client-side SEO position where I had a small team of online marketers to assist in our SEO efforts. The effect was that we were able to work on link building and onsite optimisation at the same time and obviously give it 100% of our attention (and the website had very high DA and Trust). I have recently moved to a small agency where I am the sole SEO-Guy and my clients are small. I typically have no more than 8 hours to spend per month on all aspects of SEO (analysis, reporting, link building and content optimisation) per client and I have to strictly adhere to this. To make matters more difficult, these clients typically have weak back-link profiles (low in number and quality and all pointing to the home page) and poorly optimised content (which contributes to low DA & PR). I went through my first 'monthly process' for a particular client in September and focused my 8 hours on optimising the site content for a particular section of the website. This involved optimising meta titles & descriptions, body content and images for our chosen keywords. I didn't focus on links at all. I published the changes to the site on 23rd September. When I look at my rankings as of 6th October, one keyword in particular has dropped by 28 places (from 11 to 39) which seems excessive to me. In my mind, the changes I made were small, so this drop concerns me. The particular URL was ranking in position 11 for a keyword that I subsequently targeted to another (more relevant) page in the site. Both pages have the same MR, PA and links etc. I think I may have effectively cannibalised the keyword and to make matters worse, the new page isn't even in the top 50! Both pages are in the Google Index. So, this is my longwinded way of asking for your opinion on whether other SEOs in my position would recommend spending time on building the back link profile to strengthen DA and PR of deeper pages before you start making content optimisations (given I am unable to do them at the same time). It's tricky with small clients as they don't necessarily understand how long these things can take. Cheers! Laurie

How to get started with a brand new site and domain name and prioritize content creation?
Hi there. I just bought a Moz Pro membership with the goal to start with a new domain name and create a content channel. The domain name is completely fresh so it doesn't have any authority or trust associated with it. I did initial keyword research with the Google Keyword Tool for the niche I want to address and know what content I can get out. I would like to prioritize content creation based on what will rank easily in Google and then work my way up from there. Do you have ideas on how I could best prioritize these keywords to this? How can I identify the low hanging fruit for getting some incoming links to my website such that there is already some incoming link juice? (without using any black hat tricks) Any hints or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks! PS: The website is in Europe where the blogosphere is really underdeveloped for the niche.

Content Now
This is a general question, I was wondering if anybody had used content now before, either for content writing or link building. I've had them mentioned to me by a manager but would like to hear the opinions of others too. Has anybody used anything similar for creating content at all? Thanks

Challenge: How to SEO a site with almost no content
Wondering what you all would recommend for SEO on this site: www.gudville.com Most of their content is behind a login. Basically there are 5 pages open to Google and to anyone without that login, and they are not open to doing it differently at this time. Once in, there will be a lot of sharing with Facebook friends that will include invitations to join them in their causes. Love to hear all your recommendations. Kathy

Content toggle, tabs ad accordion for seo text
Hello there, I have two questions. 1. I want to ad seo text in content toggles, tabs and accordions. does Google robots view as seo text , eg, H1 text as it would be written direct on the page? 2. About Pinguin and link building. I am seeing up an onlineprintshop, where any industry can become a client. Lets say a medical company will be our client for prints. If they link back to our onlineprint page does Goole evaluates the link as a link from a related industry. Thanks for your kind answer. Kind Regards Mike 8bMCt

Publish content on current domain for content boost or new domain for links?
I have about 1000 unique and organically generated articles. My quote compare business has had briefs submitted by clients for over two years. The content has only been accessible to registered members. I want to polish it ASAP. Is it better to publish the content on the existing website in a sub folder or set up a new website to publish the content and have every article link back to the main website? Content is around 300 words x 1000.

What is the general consensus on using Text Broker for content?
I have seen generally good reviews for http://www.textbroker.com. Does anyone here have personal experience with it? We are considering using it for content creation for guest blogging for clients. As far as we have found, this is all within Google's acceptable webmaster guidelines. In general, how much editing is required from an article provided by Text Broker? Thanks!
