Duplicate website pages indexed: Ranking dropped. Does Google checks the duplicate domain association?
-
Hi all,
Our duplicate website which is used for testing new optimisations got indexed and we dropped in rankings. But I am not sure whether this is exact reason as it happened earlier too where I don't find much drop in rankings. Also I got replies in the past that it'll not really impact original website but duplicate website. I think this rule applies to the third party websites. But if our own domain has exact duplicate content; will Google knows that we own the website from any other way we are associated like IP addresses and servers, etc..to find the duplicate website is hosted by us? I wonder how Google treats duplicate content from third party domains and own domains.
Thanks

Hi John,
Thanks for the response. I agree with you about using "rel=canonical". But there are too many pages to manually add these tags. Is there any other way to implement this?
Thanks

It's never a good idea to rely on the search engines "figuring out" confusing/contradictory signals from your website, vtmoz. While they claim they can do it in some cases, in reality, they very frequently get it wrong. (Though I've never seen any indication from Google that it makes any effort to find any connecting ownership signals between dupe sites when deciding whether to index a dupe. That would be way outside the scope of the crawler.)
So yes, it's entirely possible that wholly duplicate website is causing ranking and authority issues. Assuming what you mean by a site for "testing new optimisations" is a development website for testing new code before deploying to the live site, you'll need to get the dev site placed behind a password-protected login, or at the very least, have no-index meta tags added to every page. Once those are in place, you can use Google Search Console to request removal of the site from the index to hopefully speed things up. It's possible that when you had the dupe site before, it didn't get fully indexed, but this time it did, which would be why you're seeing more problems now. And having a dupe site in the index can definitely cause problems with the original site, as well as the dupe.
There's no guarantee removing the dupe site from the index will immediately resolve all the problems you are having, but leaving the dupe site in place in the index is just too big a risk. You'll still have to look deeper into what else may be causing or exacerbating the ranking issues.

This can be partially resolved by setting up "rel=canonical" tags on the website that you want Google to index. This is particularly advantageous when there is live duplicate content. It is basically a hint to the search engine that says "Look here!!".
Also, a better strategy to test landing pages, may be using a tool called Google Optimize, this will allow you to employ A/B and multivariate testing, without having a separate domain
Hopefully this helps!

GSC Performance completely dropped off, but Google Analytics is steady. Why can't GSC track my site anymore?
Hey everyone! I'm having a weird issue that I've never experienced before. For one of my clients, GSC has a complete drop-off in the Performance section. All of the data shows that everything fell flat, or almost completely flat. But in Google Analytics, we have steady results. No huge drop-off in traffic, etc. Do any of you know why GSC would all of a sudden be unable to crawl our site? Or track this data? Let me know what you think!

Descriptive domain vs business name domain
I originally set up my domain as "overlandparkphotographer.com" and then have my "jpshots.com" pointing to it. What I recently discovered is that even though the pages of my I set Yost SEO Title to be "JPShots Senior Pictures | Wedding Photographer" When you search "overland park photographer" the snippet tile is just "overland park photographer" which sounds super sketchy. I don't know if this is something to do with yost, or if my sneaky Domain isn't worth much, and I should simply use my regular jpshots.com domain as the primary. I know it works like a charm with yahoo, but I'm not sure how much the domain name factors google these days.

Dates appear before home page description in the SERPs- HUGE drop in rankings
We have been on the first page of Google for a number of years for search terms including 'SEO Agency', 'SEO Agency London' etc. A few months ago we made some changes to the design of the home page (added a blog feed), and made changes to the website sitemap. Two days ago (two months after last site changes were made) we dropped subsantially in the SERPs for all home page keywords. Where we are found, a date appears before the description in the SERPs, dating February 2012 (which is when we launched the original website). The site has been through a revamp since then, yet it still shows 2012. This has been followed by a few additional strange things, including the sitelinks that Google is choosing to show (which including author bio pages showing in homepage site links), and googling our brand name no longer brings up sitelinks in the SERPs. The problem only affects the home page. All other pages are performing as standard. When Penguin 4.0 came out we saw a noted improvement in our SERP performance, and our backlinks are good and quality, largely from PR efforts. Of course, I would be interested in additional pairs of eyes on the back links to see if anyone thinks that I have missed anything! We have 3 of our senior SEOs working on trying to figure out what is going on and how to resolve it, but I would be very interested if anyone has any thoughts?

Google's not indexing my blog posts anymore! Why?
Google just recently stopped indexing my blog posts immediately after being published, why could this be? I would usually post a blog post and it would be in google results within 45 seconds, now they don't show up until 6 hours later, if at all (a few never even showed up). Also, my home page doesn't even refresh when I make a change to the site. My site is CantStopHipHop [dot] comI have all in one SEO, xml sitemap generator, and webmaster tools and nothing seemed irregular in the settings.I appreciate any thoughts/help/suggestions.

Test contet/pages indexed by search engines
During the web development stages of our Joomla CMS website, we have managed to get our site indexed for totally irrelevant test pages mainly to do with Joomla and some other equally irrelevant test content. How damaging is this to our domain from an SEO prospective and is there something we can do about it? When we do a site:domain.com search we see hundreds of testpages with test/irrelevant meta tags etc.
