40% Drop in Traffic since redesign
-
Hi
One of our sites has seen a 40% drop in traffic since a redesign
We have a complete 301 redirect list and have replicated all successful content.
https://www.englishriviera.co.uk
Any opinions would be most helpful.
-
It a really low portion of the sitemap though. It's of concern. I work with around 20 sites and the rest are indexed fully.
This one used to be indexed
-
You can test the site in GSC - Google search console.
It's quite common for Google not to fully index a sitemap so check in there first.
Also my comment about Descriptions is slightly out of date already! Google has recently been allowing up to 300 characters so maybe curtail any description shortening - make them attractive through a great call to action.

Nigel

Hi Nigel
Sorry for the delay in responding. This has been so so helpful. Thanks very much.
I have people working on correcting the content issues.
The issue remaining is google will only index half of the site. I'm not sure why this is. Do you know of any sitemap testing tools?
-
Apart from that, I can't see a single earth shattering problem that is causing your site to drop just a lot of things wrong with the site which combined, may be causing that effect.
I have scanned the site and:
1. Duplicate content 911 pages but most are 'order' pages and those related to Trip Advisor - they don't seem to be doing you any harm as most of the searches are high up, eg dog friendly B&B in Paignton
These pages are dominated by a huge hero graphic that takes the whole of the top of the page then a search box - I would consider removing the graphics and starting these pages at the listings. I would then add some descriptive content surrounding the themes.
I would check in Google - GSC how the site handles the 'order' parameter - as it narrows/sorts content - maybe adjust the setting to that.
You have a lot of listings which are incomplete - I'd remove the wording Awaiting Copy as it's on all of these:

A lot of titles too long - (474 including order pages)
You have no canonicalisation at all and best practice is to self-canonicalise.
Apart from that?
Little written content.
I'm guessing that a lot of this would have been on the previous site anyway - the overuse of large hero graphics is an irritation as you have to scroll to see content. There is no simple search - it's complicated and seems to appear on every page.
Missing
No Twitter cards
No Facebook OG
No Schema.orgSo lots missing but nothing that a good SEO couldn't sort for you.
It is a combination of lots of things.
I hope this helps.

Nigel

Thanks for this - very helpful. They aren't really the core pages though, so although this was super helpful I think something else is also going on.
Anyone else have an idea?

Hi Andrew
If you go to the search results from the INURL link I put there then go to the right of the URL there is a green arrow. Hit that and the word 'cached' and you will see a version of the page as scraped by Google with a caching date.
Regards
Nigel
-
Thanks for this - I can see the search results. Where can you see the date they were cached?
Thanks so much for the response.

Hi Andrew
If you type in to Google - site:https://www.englishriviera.co.uk inurl:http:
You will see that there are around 255 http pages still indexed some of which were cached on the 19 December so I am guessing that your switch from HTTPS was quite recent.
While Google resolves these pages there can be an overlap with both versions ranking and of course, Google sees them as duplicates. It is fairly common to see a short drop in rankings because of this but it is not permanent. Google favours HTTPS sites over standard HTTP so it should not be long it comes bouncing back.
I would go through the URLs you find by that search (above) and check that they all redirect. Meanwhile more on the switch here:

Google Fetch and Render - Partial result (resources temporarily unavailable)
Over the past few weeks, my website pages have been showing as partial in the Google Search Console. There are many resources/ files (js, css, images) that are 'temporarily unreachable'. The website files haven't had any structural changes for about 2 years (it historically has always shows as 'completed' and rendered absolutely fine in the search console). I have checked and the robots.txt is fine as is the sitemap. My host hasn't been very helpful, but has confirmed there are no server issues. My website rankings have now dropped which I think is due to these resources issues and I need to clear this issue up asap - can any one here offer any assistance? It would be hugely appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Getting indexed by Google scholar
Often my Google Scholar alerts result in exactly what I think they will: scholarly articles published in academic journals. However, today I got this completely non-scholarly article https://www.t-nation.com/training/the-exact-reps-that-make-you-grow and I have no idea why Google Scholar is indexing this site. I've read up on how to get indexed by Google Scholar, and this website doesn't seem to have the necessary requirements. I'm curious for anyone whose clients or industry need to get indexed by Google Scholar, what has worked for you?

Why rich snippets have disappeared in Google search results ?
Hello, Few weeks ago, we have implemented a snippets strategy in order to increase our ranking for our blog posts. That was successful and our results were showing up in Google. But today, every single snippet has disappeared. We go back to a simple search result, without snippets for us or for our competitors. It seems that Google has delete rich snippet for specific keywords because for the generic keywords (for exemple "inbound marketing definition" in our case), there is still a snippet result. Do you know if Google has changed snippets parameters for keywords with low search volume ? Thank you !

What are the SEO challenges associated with private search engines, like DuckDuckGo?
I read recently that DuckDuckGo doubled in size in 2017. With their search engine, and other alternatives to Google, taking part of the search market away, how can SEO/Marketing/Web pros keep their websites optimized and get traffic from these private search engines? (Also, do any of you have experience with this? What portion of your search traffic is coming from private search engines?)

Community Discussion - How diverse are your traffic sources, and do you optimize for DuckDuckGo at all?
In a post earlier this week, Roy Hinkis makes the case that SEOs should be focusing on attacking diverse traffic sources and harnessing the potential of social, sites like Twitch.tv and Buzzfeed, and new search engines like DuckDuckGo. Have you had success in diversifying your traffic sources beyond the Big G? What are your thoughts on the up & coming DuckDuckGo, and do you have any personal experiences to share in optimizing for it?

Why has our site had a huge spike in referral traffic?
Starting last week, our site had a HUGE spike in referral traffic from: search.dnsassist.verizon.net. We have never had a visit from there until last week, and had 12K visits last week so something is happening. The traffic does look normal though, all visits were in the US from 700 cities and pages/visit, avg visit duration and bounce rate are close to site average. There is a few other referral sites that showed up last week as well: wind.search-help.net, uslc.search-help.net, finder.cox.net. All of these sites are low, around 30 to 50 visits a day, but we had not any referrals until last week. I did notice most of these sites state "Explore with Yahoo Search." Just wondering if anyone has every seen this before and wondering what is happening. Thanks for reading. <colgroup><col width="207"></colgroup>
