With Google's new Speed Update, what does that mean for AMP pages?
-
Hey everyone!
I wanted to get the other Mozzers opinions on this.
With Google announcing a new Speed Update that will affect mobile rankings, I wanted to ask: How will AMP pages play into this?
Let me know what you think!
Thanks! -
Hi Taylor, great question! I think the first thing to remember is that AMP is something you want to implement alongside a mobile-friendly website, not as a replacement.
AMP pages by nature are faster than the typical webpage and so they should not be affected by this, according to Google's statement: "The “Speed Update,” as we’re calling it, will only affect pages that deliver the slowest experience to users and will only affect a small percentage of queries." They also note that query intent is a very strong signal and so in theory a very slow but very relevant page could still outrank a faster, less relevant result.
My take on this update is that it is a sign of Google starting to focus on making the shift to mobile-first indexing. If you want more info on that, I wrote a blog post here on Moz about it recently: moz.com/blog/mobile-first-indexing-seo

Critique a site I'm working on please
Hi guys, I have a list of things to do on this website that is longer than my arm but thought I would gather a few more thoughts on the site before moving on further with it. The site is here. It went live a couple of days ago for live testing. I have a news section coming very soon at theworkplacedepot.co.uk/news - it is in live testing now. One glaring issue for me is that some of the products simply aren't "buyable". What I mean by that is that the options are too vague and too vast - as an outsider I wouldnt have a clue what I was buying! Other issues: The banner at the bottom of the HP is a test - its design will be changing. The sitemap has some issues and will be addressed. There is no area yet to "log-in". However, critique for me pretty please! 🙂

Number of links per page?
I'm confused by the number of links that we should put on a page. Our site has a high domain authority but SEOmoz tool and others, plus Google WMT suggests much much less than other sites have - look at Dailymail.co.uk or the Huff post site for example. our site is www.worldtravelguide.net and I'm thinking specifically about the /destinations and each continent like /europe Our site has thousands of pages, trying to create an effective internal linking structure with the limitation of 150 or so links is nearly impossible and ends up with too many navigational pages. We were hit hard by Panda (even though all our content is original, professionally written frequently updated) in favour of bigger brands and considering Google suggests that sites should be designed for users and not SEO these two ideals conflict. Does anyone have any data on what the link limit is? Any other tips or observations would be gratefully received. Thanks, John

Drop Down Menus & SEO?
Do these typically have a negative impact on SEO? I know this is kind of a vague question, does it make it harder to spider? Are there SEO friendly ways of coding these? There are so many sites out there that have these, so I've got to assume it's different on a case by case basis.
