Duplicate Homepage - How to fix?
-
Hi Everyone,
I've tried using BeamUsUp SEO Crawler and have found one warning and two errors on our site.
The warning is for a duplicate meta description, and the errors are a duplicate page and a duplicate title.
For each problem it's showing the same two pages as the source of the error, but one has a slash at the end and one doesn't. They're both for the homepage.
And
Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone know if this is anything we should worry about?

Moz was warning me about thin content and I got the idea that it was because of "/" from
which said zero unique phrases
maybe it's because i have "Home" and "Home_master" although the Home_master has eye crossed out (shouldnt be visible to goog)

My answer above applies specifically to your situation too, @Elchanan. You are not being penalised by Google for duplicate content in your example.
As I mentioned, the root of a domain is a special case. The version with the slash at the end is considered the same URL as the one without the slash by both browsers and search engines. So much so that it is impossible to redirect from one to the other because that creates a redirect loop - the page is redirecting to itself.
If that SEO tool has warned you of that issue, it's because the tool isn't properly programmed to handle this unique situation correctly.
Hope that helps.

This is an incorrect implementation in the BeamUsUp tool. The hostname (the basic root URL) is a special case. Both the version with the ending slash and without the ending slash are considered by browsers and search engines to be exactly the same.
In fact, you cannot redirect one to the other. Because the browser is programmed to consider them the same, you'll create an infinite loop. So not only is there nothing you should do, there's nothing you can do.
This is the only case where this is true though! For all other internal URLs. the version with the slash is considered to be a completely different URL than the one without the slash. So unless you redirect one version to the other for internal pages, you'll have duplicate content issues.
Hope that helps.

Hi there,
If you 301 redirect one version of the url to the other (whichever version matches the rest of your urls), then it should solve this duplicate content issue.
thanks!

Pagination & duplicate meta
Hi I have a few pages flagged for duplicate meta e.g.: http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=2

http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches I can;t see anything wrong with the pagination & other pages have the same code, but aren't flagged for duplicate: http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/coshh-cabinets http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/coshh-cabinets?page=2 I can't see to find the issue - any ideas? Becky0 -
Should I remove all meta descriptions to avoid duplicates as a short term fix?
I’m currently trying to implement Matt Cutt’s advice from a recent YouTube video, in which he said that it was better to have no meta descriptions at all than duplicates. I know that there are better alternatives, but, if forced to make a choice, would it be better to remove all duplicate meta descriptions from a site than to have duplicates (leaving a lone meta tag description on the home page perhaps?). This would be a short term fix prior to making changes to our CMS to allow us to add unique meta descriptions to the most important pages. I’ve seen various blogs across the internet which recommend removing all the tags in these circumstances, but I’m interested in what people on Moz think of this. The site currently has a meta description which is duplicated across every page on the site.

Should i fix 404 my errors?
We have about 250, 404 errors due to changing alot of page names throughout our site. I've read some articles saying to leave them and eventually they will go away. Normally I would do a 301 redirect. What's the best solution?

What constitutes a duplicate page?
Hi, I have a question about duplicate page content and wondered if someone is able to shed some light on what actually constitutes a "duplicate". We publish hundreds of bus timetable pages that have similar, but technically with unique urls and content. For example http://www.intercity.co.nz/travel-info/timetable/lookup/akl The template of the page is oblivious duplicated, but the vast majority of the content is unique to each page, with data being refreshed each night. Our crawl shows these as duplicate page errors, but is this just a generalisation because the urls are very similar? (only the last three characters change for each page - in this case /akl) Thanks in advance.

Duplicate content
I run about 10 sites and most of them seemed to fall foul of the penguin update and even though I have never sought inorganic links I have been frantically searching for a link based answer since April. However since asking a question here I have been pointed in another direction by one of your contributors. It seems At least 6 of my sites have duplicate content issues. If you search Google for "We have selected nearly 200 pictures of short haircuts and hair styles in 16 galleries" which is the first bit of text from the site short-hairstyles.com about 30000 results appear. I don't know where they're from nor why anyone would want to do this. I presume its automated since there is so much of it. I have decided to redo the content. So I guess (hope) at some point in the future the duplicate nature will be flushed from Google's index? But how do I prevent it happening again? It's impractical to redo the content every month or so. For example if you search for "This facility is written in Flash® to use it you need to have Flash® installed." from another of my sites that I coincidently uploaded a new page to a couple of days ago, only the duplicate content shows up not my original site. So whoever is doing this is finding new stuff on my site and getting it indexed on google before even google sees it on my site! Thanks, Ian

How to Remove Joomla Canonical and Duplicate Page Content
I've attempted to follow advice from the Q&A section. Currently on the site www.cherrycreekspine.com, I've edited the .htaccess file to help with 301s - all pages redirect to www.cherrycreekspine.com. Secondly, I'd added the canonical statement in the header of the web pages. I have cut the Duplicate Page Content in half ... now I have a remaining 40 pages to fix up. This is my practice site to try and understand what SEOmoz can do for me. I've looked at some of your videos on Youtube ... I feel like I'm scrambling around to the Q&A and the internet to understand this product. I'm reading the beginners guide.... any other resources would be helpful.

Are duplicate links on same page alright?
If I have a homepage with category links, is it alright for those category links to appear in the footer as well, or should you never have duplicate links on one page? Can you please give a reason why as well? Thanks!
