Anyone decipher the Yelp Sort ?
-
Anyone tried to decipher the factor in the default sorting order on Yelp? I've not done any formal testing but from experience my gut feel is as follows (chime in with your own opinion based on your own observations).
On searches - #1 factor is of course keyword(s) appear in category business is in or business name
After that, or for just browsing categories30% proximity of business location to location entered in address field
20% number of reviews and average rating
20% if they are paying Yelp for any services - the is unfair but I'm pretty sure it's a factor (call to action button, advertising, etc)
15% Business Profile is filled out
15% keyword (if using search) appears in specialties section (which interestingly Yelp started charging to display!)This is a TOTAL GUESS. I'm wondering if these factors may effect it:
- Quantity photos and/or keyword matches photo captions
- How long business has been listed on Yelp
- How long ago business was started
- Whether a street address is entered or not (a factor of Google Local Results I think)

Hi Wizkids964!
I just want to say I'm sorry that your thread didn't receive replies from the community. I haven't seen any good, formal data to either verify or challenge your analysis, and I expect others in our community are in the same boat.
What I have seen is videos like this one which hypothesize how to move the needle in Yelp:

But they aren't broken down into percentages like you've done here. It would be nice to see more studies like this, and again, my apologies that no one here had data to help prove or disprove your hypothesis.

How to Remove Old Photos from Bing Maps (Yelp is Involved)
Hi All, We have a client with a Bing Maps listing with old photos on it that we can't seem to remove. The photos are being populated from other sites like Yelp. The kicker is, we didn't upload the photos to Yelp, a user did. We've messaged the user to please remove the photos and they haven't responded. Now Yelp won't let us contact the user again and we've already flagged the photos on Yelp weeks ago but they haven't been removed. We don't see a spot to flag them on Bing. Do you have any recommendations for how to remove these?

Has anyone tried using AMP links in Google Business Listings?
We have a client with multiple locations, and Google Business listings for each location. We've also created AMP pages for each of those location landing pages, and they're ranking on page one of their main queries, just below the local pack. We're wondering if anyone has tried pointing a GMB website listing at an AMP page, or if there are considerations to keep in mind before testing it out. So far, we've discussed whether to use the AMP url (amp.domain.com) or the Google viewer url (google.com/amp/s/amp.domain.com), and potential concerns for desktop users.

Does anyone use web.com services
Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the services offered with web.com, particularly the local listings service of 525 local directory listings? Have you had success with using their service like this or not?

Removing a page in GSC - anyone done this?
I've deleted a bunch of pages, but they're still indexed by Google and showing up 404s. All links to these pages have been removed. Because they're showing a 404, our web dev team are saying that they can't implement a noindex tag, so I came across this - https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals Anyone tried this? Or got a better idea? We've also added all the pages to robots.txt but they still haven't been de-indexed. Cheers, Rhys

Anyone know how to filter by location-neutral results?
Google dropped the ability to filter your search results by location, and it's now using your precise location to give results. Here's an article from Search Engine Land that covers the removal of location setting: http://searchengineland.com/google-drops-change-location-search-filter-from-search-results-237247 Anyone know a work around for getting location-neutral results? Before I was using "Location: United States" to find unbiased results, but that's not an option any more.

Yelp 3rd Party Reviews
Our team would like to use Yelps 3rd party integration on our national industry specific platform directory to bolster ratings and reviews until we can organically generate our own. However, I have SEO concerns over doing this. Specifically, we're concerned over the following: Publishing massive amounts of content that has already been published on Yelp. Worth noting that Yelp's review integration does not hide the the content behind an iFrame. Publishing a backlink providing attribution to Yelp on every one of 40,000 profiles linking back to contextual Yelp profiles. Less worried here as Yelp is reputable and is not likely to hurt ratings. This is required by Yelp under their TOS. I think this is a pretty good growth strategy on the part of yelp, but I have worries that this could induce lasting damage on our own SEO that we're working to ramp up. My questions are: Should I have concerns about duplicative content? Is Yelp big enough for Google to know about this 3rd party integration? If I ensure that R&Rs are only posted on pages that have a noindex, nofollow, do we protect ourselves from duplicative content. (ie. Google bots will not review this content, so we will not have to worry about them finding and attributing duplicative content penalties.) Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Does anyone use Moz Local + Yext? How valuable is this for local businesses?
For brands that have a budget to pay $600 / year for valuable backlink directories, would you recommend Moz Local + Yext? I would like to hear some feedback on marketers that use Yext. Thanks,
