URL Structure for a shopping website
-
I have a website which currently has a bad URL structure. I would like to change it.
Proposed URL Structure:
www.website.com/category/men/jackets
www.website.com/category/men/jackets/product-name
Is it a good URL structure?
I have seen some other website uses their product name right after their root domain.
I have also seen another structure which changes like below:
www.website.com/womens-jackets/products
www.website.com/mens-jackets/products
Which is Good URL structure for SEO & users?

Thanks István Keszeg & Gaston Riera. That helps a lot.

Sorry, I've forgot to detail that case:) Thanks for pointing it out.

+1 to /category/subcategory/product
Also, addressing the case where a product can live in several categories, those should be taken care of, either redirecting all to the correct or with canonicals.
Hope it helps.
Best luck

Hi there,
Regarding website.com/category/product
What you have to take into consideration: if a product is going to be placed in more than one category, then this product is going to be indexable on more than one URL paths. (Like Gaston mentioned below, in this case you need to take care of duplication, which you can do with canonical links or redirection to one path).
For example, let's say you have a product which is in both cat1, subcat1 and cat2. This way you will have minimum 3 available paths to the product:
This means that on product level you will have to deal with internal duplicated content. This is why usually prefer to use website.com/product url path (IMO).
Regarding the /category/subcategory/ vs /category-subcategory/ this is really a technical question. How "deep" is going to be your website? Do you want a flat infrastructure?
I usually prefer the /category/subcategory/ structure, because of the idea of contents of an e-commerce website should be build up with a structure based upon content silos, where from general you move towards the specific (indifferent of how we achieve this, with subcategories or filters within categories). I really hope it helps you answer your questions.

SEO strategy for UK / US websites
Hi, We currently have a UK-focused site on www.palmatin.com ; We're now targeting the North American market as well, but the contents of the site need to be different from UK. One option was to create another domain for the NA market but I assume it would be easier to rank with palmatin.com though. What would you suggest to do, if a company is targeting two different countries in the same language? thanks, jaan

Domain Authority Drop After Website Relaunch
Prior to my website redesign and relaunch on July 10th, our domain authority was 33. 301 redirects were implemented properly. Out or 600 pages, about 200 URLs were modified. Domain authority has dropped to 28. Rankings are terrible. Conversions are awful. What does the domain authority drop mean? I have noticed in the past that a drop in domain authority tends to coincide with more a drop in ranking and a drop in the quality of visitors. The site is www.metro-manhattan.com Thanks,

Can you use a base element and mod_rewrite to alleviate the need for absolute URLs?
This is a follow up question to Scott Parsons' question about using absolute versus relative URLs when linking internally. Andy King makes the statement that this can be done and that it saves additional space (which he claims then can improve page speed). Is this a true and accurate statement? Can using a base element and mod-rewrite alleviate the need for absolute URLs? I need to know before going off on a "change all of our relative URLs to absolutes" campaign. Thanks in advance! Dana

How to serve a Mobile & Full Site using one URL?
Hello, Does anyone know of any resources or tutorials that outline how to serve a smartphone-formatted website using the same URL as the full site? I know that one solution is using media-queries to serve a seperate CSS stylesheet, but you still have the full HTML source code. In other words, I might want to serve a smartphone & desktop user different content, but under one URL. WP Touch (Wordpress Plugin) is a perfect example of what I mean, but how is it technically achieved? It serves two different sets of HTML for smartphone & full, but using one URL http://www.bravenewcode.com/store/plugins/wptouch-pro/

How WP Themes work with Navigation Structure for SEO and JQuery Headers?
I am trying to find the best WP Theme for our company. I noticed most of them do not offer a left hand side navigation on the home pages, and usually are on the right side on the inside pages. I always thought that Home Page links were very important for SEO. Currenly we have a left drop down navigation with all of our product catagories, keyword optimized. The structure follows for all the pages. Is this not as important to Search Engines anymore? Is it better to have a products link, to all the products and then the inside pages, have just a navigation bar, for that particular catagory? This seems to be very common on all the templates i am seeing. I also noticed, and really like the JQueary Tabs. I would use this for displaying, PDFs and Specifications Charts. Also, some home page images are using a jquery slider with some text, linking to a page. Is Jquery the new javascript and do search engines see what is in the code? I also noticed they all have footers that have links and some other information. Is this a SEO must have?
