What are the Best Practices for moving a blog from subdomain to domain/subcategory?
-
Howdy SEOmoz fans! (couldn't resist).
I'm moving a wordpress blog from blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog.
Trying to do it right the first time and cover all my bases.
Issues I'm trying to handle correctly, in varying degrees of importance:
-
External LInks
-
Internal Links
-
Google Friendly Traffic Routing in a dynamic environment (wordpress, 301, .htaccess, etc.)
Thanks so much for any and all input!

Yeah, sorry didn't know to mark it as answered. But we've redirected successfully, thanks!

Hi Melissa,
Did John's answer answer your question, or are you still looking for some more advice?
-
If you're going to do it in phases, I'd do it as follows:
- Set up domain.com/blog, and make sure it's serving pages correctly. So now, both blog.domain.com and domain.com/blog would be serving duplicate content for the time being.
- Set up all pages in blog.domain.com to 301 redirect to their counterparts under domain.com/blog.
- Update all links in my site pointing to blog.domain.com pages to point to their counterparts under domain.com/blog.
As long as there isn't a lot of lag between steps 1 & 2 I wouldn't worry too much about duplicate content, as there won't be links pointing to your blog under domain.com/blog, so Google likely won't even find it.

6 months Later - 0 Domain Authority/Page Authority and losing Rankings
Hi Moz, Sorry if this comes across as a "Do My Job For Me" type of post but we are an E-Commerce store that have been live since January but have not seen any increase in performance on our site and over the past month, have even seen our rankings decrease. We have 1300 products on site and about 1500 pages in total. 1. As for on-site optimization, we have got 2 reviews and follow up reviews with a highly reputable reviewer from People Per Hour and solved any issues she has found. 2. Updated the Meta Data for products and Alt Descriptions for images focusing on the keywords we wish to rank for. We post weekly blogposts linking back to our products. 3. Social Media Campaigns with regular campaigns on FaceBook, Pinterest, Google+ and Twitter. 4. Attempted to build FOLLOW backlinks to articles relating to products on our site. We have also considered purchasing backlinks to improve our situation as we have yet to see any of these pages be crawled by Google over a month later. I have read a guides on Moz and other sites on how to improve our authority and improve rankings but none have offered much by way of practical solution. My question being, is this just a matter of patience or should I be worried/improving anything given we have 0 Domain Authority and Page Authority on all pages? Thanking you in advance, SEO Novice.

Blog - subdomain vs. subfolderq
Hi everyone I work on an ecommerce site and I'm trying to get more content together for the site & blog. The development team want to put the blog we have on a subdomain of our site, my question is - what is better for SEO Subfolder vs. subdomain I've read a couple of articles to say subfolder is better and a subdomain needs a lot of management to build up authority itself? Thanks!

I've got duplicate pages. For example, blog/page/2 is the same as author/admin/page/2\. Is this something I should just ignore, or should I create the author/admin/page2 and then 301 redirect?
I'm going through the crawl report and it says I've got duplicate pages. For example, blog/page/2 is the same as author/admin/page/2/ Now, the author/admin/page/2 I can't even find in WordPress, but it is the same thing as blog/page/2 nonetheless. Is this something I should just ignore, or should I create the author/admin/page2 and then 301 redirect it to blog/page/2?

Advanced: SEO best practice for a large forum to minimise risk...?
Hi Hope someone can offer some insight here. We have a site with an active forum. The transactional side of the site is about 300 pages totals, and the forum is well over 100,000 (and growing daily) meaning the 'important' pages account for less that 0.5% of all pages on the site. Rankings are pretty good and we're ticking lots of boxes with the main site, with good natural links, logical architecture, appropriate keyword targeting. I'm worried about the following: crawl budget PR flow Panda We actively moderate the forum for spam and generally the content is good (for a forum anyway), so I'm just looking for any best practice tips for minimising risk. I've contemplated moving the forum to a subdomain so there's that separation, or even noindexing the forum completely, although it does pull in traffic. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks!

Would looking at my competitors back links help me? What would be the recommended amount of back links created per week? Also how many blogs entries should we aim to create per week?
