In this situation, should I consolidate two pages into 1 for stronger SEO?
-
Hi,
I have a site that has a categorized structure and products like this:
/categoryA
/categoryA/product1
/categoryA/product2
/categoryA/product3
/categoryB
/categoryB/product1
/categoryB/product2
etc.The category pages have a list of the products within that category.
At the moment the category pages perform strongest SEO wise - ie these pages:
/categoryA
/categoryBSometimes I get down to only having 1 product in each categotry like this:
/categoryA
/categoryA/product1My Question:
Q: In this case is it a good idea to direct / redirect all traffic to the single product page - ie /categoryA/product1 ?BTW these are my reasons for thinking this this might be worthwhile:
• UX - User gets to the product page quicker with one less step
• Merging 2 pages with similar content together might somehow combine/consilidate the SEO strength and perform better in SERP.thanks in advance

Hi DAGU,
This is an interesting question and one that requires research. Google rank brain will identify words intent that are essentially the same. You can see this with keywords by typing them into the search engine. If you type in 'How much is a haircut' in bold you'll see in the entries to the SERP 'haircut prices' 'average costs' haircut cost 'hairdresser cost' etc. So you know google considers these to be the same things.
So if you mention 'price', 'cost', 'average price' loads of times you're going to get slammed for keywords stuffing because these are variants on the same words.
Now with products it's a little more difficult but the same principle applies. You need to find out what people (and google) considers to be in the same topic and where the edges of that topic are. This takes testing and time and research.
But the best place to start is with googling. On the highest ranking pages do they group the products together or have them on separate pages? Also use your brain (I don't mean that in a derogatory way) but shut your laptop and think critically about what your customers want to see on each page and what type of customer might be looking for what product and why.
Even better go ask them! But looking at successful pages will give you a good start. Make sure you have your Mozbar on and discount the pages with very high DA or PA because they may be ranking because of factors not related to on page or smart information architecture but because they are just established players. You want model the small players who are newer and doing it right.
There is basically a balance to be struck between the serp entry (very important for people looking for something specific) and the page content which needs to have the depth and comprehensiveness to rank. And there's no tool out there except your own brain and your customers/staff that's gonna give you those answers.
Also don't be afraid to test. I treat 'gummy smiles' with Botox so had that as part of my botox page. I just took it out this morning and made a page dedicated to gummy smiles that includes laser gum contouring, crown lengthening and all sorts of other stuff. Let's just see what happens. You can always change it back if it doesn't work.
But be aware of volume. If you've got one page for the "Nobel Biocare Straumann Titanium Implant" it's just not gonna pick up enough search and google's not going to get enough data from chrome to rank it. So I have it as a tab on my Dental Implants page and if someone does a search it it's marked up & H3 so it comes up as a hyperlink in blue.
Good luck. But this is a critical thinking job and a research job so get googling and see what google considers the delimitations of your topics. Spending two days just googling products and making notes will not be time wasted because you'll get a feel for it. And once you start to get a feel for these things then you can start using your intuition and taking shortcuts.
Most of the stuff I do now I just wing it and do a few tests and pick a winner. Because i've done so much painstaking research I feel I have a pretty good idea of what google's got in mind for my categories and topics.

Wrong Page Ranking?!?
I did some research today, one of our keywords is "mobile column lifts." I recently redid a page on our website to target this keyword. When I Google search this keyword I see that a page on our site titled "Reconditioned Mobile Lifts" is ranking for this keyword. I took a look with Moz, our mobile column lifts page ranks 90 for the keyword, and the reconditioned lifts page ranks 73 the keyword. Why is this happening? How can I fix this? https://www.slec.com/mobile-column-lifts/ https://www.slec.com/reconditioned-mobile-lifts/

Should I deindex my pages?
I recently changed the URLs on a website to make them tidier and easier to follow. I put 301s in place to direct all the previous page names to the new ones. However, I didn't read moz's guide which says I should leave the old sitemap online for a few weeks afterwards. As I result, webmaster tools is showing duplicate page titles (which means duplicate pages) for the old versions of the pages I have renamed. Since the old versions are no longer on the sitemap, google can no longer access them to find the 301s I have put in place. Is this a problem that will fix itself over time or is there a way to quicken up the process? I could use webmaster tools to remove these old urls, but I'm not sure if this is recommended. Alternatively, I could try and recreate the old sitemap, but this would take a lot of time.

Do I need to do on-page SEO for my mobile site?
We have a desktop site, and we just built our first mobile site. Right now, the mobile site doesn't have any title tags, meta descriptions or anything like that, but do I need to even do that? If I have all of that on the desktop site, and the mobile site is just redirected from the desktop site, can't I just do it on the desktop site only? Is there anything to gain from doing it for both sites?

Too many on page links
Hi All, As we all know, having to much links on a page is an obstacle for search engine crawlers in terms of the crawl allowance. My category pages are labeled as pages with to many "one page" links by the SEOmoz crawler. This probably comes from the fact that each product on the category page has multiple links (on the image and model number). Now my question is, would it help to setup a text-link with a clickable area as big as the product area? This means every product gets just one link. Would this help get the crawlers deeper in these pages and distribute the link-juice better? Or is Google smart enough already to figure out that two links to the same product page shouldn't be counted as two? Thanks for your replies guys. Rich

Diagnostic says too many links on a page and most of the pages are from blog entries. Are tags considered links? How do I decrease links?
I just ran my first diagnostic on my site and the results came back were negative in the area of too many links one a page. There were also quite a few 404 errors. What is the best way to fix these problems? Most of the pages with too many links are from blog posts, are the tags counted as well and is this the reason for too many links?

My site, http://goo.gl/h0igI was ranking on page one for many of our biggest keywords. All of a sudden, we completely fell off. I believe I'm down somewhere between page 40-50. I have no warning or error messages in webmaster tools. Can anyone please help me identify what the problem is? This is completely unexpected and I don't know how to fix it... Thanks in advance

If you only want your home page to rank, can you use rel="canonical" on all your other pages?
If you have a lot of pages with 1 or 2 inbound links, what would be the effect of using rel="canonical" to point all those pages to the home page? Would it boost the rankings of the home page? As I understand it, your long-tail keyword traffic would start landing on the home page instead of finding what they were looking for. That would be bad, but might be worth it.
