Penalty for duplicate content on the same website?

Is it possible to get a penalty for duplicate content on the same website?
I have a old custom-built site with a large number of filters that are pre-generated for speed. Basically the only difference is the meta title and H1 tag, with a few text differences here and there.
Obviously I could no-follow all the filter links but it would take an enormous amount of work.
The site is performing well in the search.
I'm trying to decide whether if there is a risk of a penalty, if not I'm loath to do anything in case it causes other issues.

Your ranking will be decreased. It is better to use canonical URL to avoid duplicate contents in your website.

It wouldn't cause a literal penalty from Google, however, yes, it can hurt your site's rankings.
It sounds like those filters use URL parameters? If so it's possible for all parameterized URLs to be controlled or use canonical tags to indicate duplicate content.
What types of filters are these? EG what is changing on the page when you select the filters? Is this like an ecommerce category experience where you're filtering product listings?

Hi seoman10,
there is no penalty for duplicated content but rankings can be impacted negatively because of the duplicated content and your web may have a worst performance on Google.
This is because Google will waste many time searching in all your similar content to decide which page to show in the search results, wasting also your "crawl budget", and probably will also divide the authority between more than one of the similar pages, losing authority in this process.
Also, Google may choose to show in the search results a filter version of the page that is not your preferred one.
I recommend you to use canonicals to solve this problem, pointing all the filter versions of the page with canonical to the non-filter one.
Hope that helps
Good luck!

Big problem with duplicate page content
Hello! I am a beginner SEO specialist and a have a problem with duplicate pages content. The site I'm working on is an online shop made with Prestashop. The moz crawl report shows me that I have over 4000 duplicate page content. Two weeks ago I had 1400. The majority of links that show duplicate content looks like bellow:

http://www.sitename.com/category-name/filter1
http://www.sitename.com/category-name/filter1/filter2 Firstly, I thought that the filtres don't work. But, when I browse the site and I test it, I see that the filters are working and generate links like bellow:
http://www.sitename.com/category-name#/filter1
http://www.sitename.com/category-name#/filter1/filter2 The links without the # do not work; it messes up with the filters.
Why are the pages indexed without the #, thus generating me duplicate content?
How can I fix the issues?
Thank you very much!0 -

Moving some content to a new domain - best practices to avoid duplicate content?
Hi We are setting up a new domain to focus on a specific product and want to use some of the content from the original domain on the new site and remove it from the original. The content is appropriate for the new domain and will be irrelevant for the original domain and we want to avoid creating completely new content. There will be a link between the two domains. What is the best practice for this to avoid duplicate content and a potential Panda penalty?

How To Handle Duplicate Content Regarding A Corp With Multiple Sites and Locations?
I have a client that has 800 locations. 50 of them are mine. The corporation has a standard website for their locations. The only thing different is their location info on each page. The majority of the content is the same for each website for each location. What can be done to minimize the impact/penalty of having "duplicate or near duplicate" content on their sites? Assuming corporate won't allow the pages to be altered.

How are they avoiding duplicate content?
One of the largest stores in USA for soccer runs a number of whitelabel sites for major partners such as Fox and ESPN. However, the effect of this is that they are creating duplicate content for their products (and even the overall site structure is very similar). Take a look at: http://www.worldsoccershop.com/23147.html http://www.foxsoccershop.com/23147.html http://www.soccernetstore.com/23147.html You can see that practically everything is the same including: product URL product title product description My question is, why is Google not classing this as duplicate content? Have they coded for it in a certain way or is there something I'm missing which is helping them achieve rankings for all sites?

SEOMoz mistaking image pages as duplicate content
I'm getting duplicate content errors, but it's for pages with high-res images on them. Each page has a different, high-res image on it. But SEOMoz keeps telling me it's duplicate content, even though the images are different (and named different). Is this something I can ignore or will Google see it the same way too?
