Backlink Help - Contact Site Owners or 301 Redirect?
-
Hi,
I am performing some backlink updates for a client and would like to know if I can speed the process up.
Currently I am contact site owners and asking them to update the links that appear on their website of my clients.
As this is tedious work, can I just setup 301 redirects for these products instead of contacting site owners and asking them to change the URL? Is there any benefit to having the proper URL on other websites?
Thanks in advance!

This depends upon the nature of your link amendment task. If for example, most of the links are pointing to an old architecture for your site (say your site moved from the HTTP to the HTTPS protocol) then amending the links is better, as it means the link equity won't be diluted through redirects. Even a straight A-to-B 301 redirect loses some equity, though it does a pretty good job of insulation. Usually in this situation your canonical HTTP to HTTPS redirects should be catching those links anyway
If you're redirecting links which result in 404s, you can certainly use 301s but unless the content and theme of the destination URL is very similar to the removed page (which now 404s through inbound links) - then not much of the equity will shift across. Certainly it is better to actually get the links amended.
My advice is, do as many amends as humanly possible (it is tedious, it will take time). For those who don't respond at all in 2-3 weeks, clean them up with 301s. If they later respond and amend their link, you could then remove that 301 to keep your htaccess file / web.config file nice and clean...
Hope that helps

Could anyone help me with this fake site I found in my backlink profile?
The site is masquerading as 'yurbuds' store, a brand of headphones, but in SERPs, as seen in the image below, the content on the site is actually of one of my other sites. Has anyone seen anything like this before? How would it have happened? My instinct is to disavow. Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance! IvDcE

Does an external link to an image file on my site help my SEO?
I found a few websites that are displaying images from my site. Curiously, they have also linked these images to the source image file on my website. I found these because Moz showed these sites in my list of backlinks. I assume that means it impacts my Domain Authority. But does this actually help me in search engines since it's not linking to a page on my site?

Does iframe itself count as a backlink?
Our situation is similar to YouTube. We have an original content on every subpage that is genuinely useful when embedded as a widget on 3r party websites. That is why we offer an embeddable widget that shows slightly simplified version of the content - exactly like a YouTube video embedded on your blog. The embed code is simply an iframe sourcing from our subpage: <iframe src="wikibudgets.org/subpage"></p> </blockquote> <p>1/ Does the iframe itself pass any link value at all to the subpage?</p> <p>2/ If yes, what would be the equivalent of anchor text in iframe?</p> <p>3/ If not, will any link in the subpage pass link value from the 3rd party website to my domain/subpage?</p> <p>4/ If not, will I be punished/rewarded if I ask users to put a visible, unobfuscated link to the subpage below the iframe?</p> <blockquote style="background: #f7f7f7; padding-top: 5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-left: 2px; padding-bottom: 5px; white-space: nowrap; overflow-y: auto; font-family: monospace;"> <p><iframe src="wikibudgets.org/subpage" /><a href="wikibudgets.org/subpage">rich anchor text</a></p> </blockquote></iframe>

30,746 Links from One Site to Our Site
I learned this morning in our Google Webmaster Account about a website has 30,746 links to our website. Both our website and their site present information related to plastic materials, so in essence they complement one another. However, is having that massive amount of links from one site to ours a bad thing and should we use Google Disavow? Also, they have a PR3 while our site is PR5 (not sure if that matters much).

Targeting high Page Authority sites vs high Pagerank sites for backlinks?
For many years I've been working on seo/backlinks for my website. When doing analysis in opensiteexplorer I notice that the highest listed backlinks for my site are sites with high page authority and domain authority, rather than pagerank. For example one of the highest backlinks for my website has page authority/domain authority of 72/96 but the site itself is only a PR2, while my other backlinks have PR4, 5, or 6 with lower page authority. For a while I've been trying to partner with websites for backlinks from high pagerank sites, as I've always believed this is the #1 metric in relaying link juice. But OSE's metrics seem to not follow that train of thought -- it believes page authority/domain authority is a more important measure. Is it? Should I change my strategy to try to partner with websites that have high page authority rather than focusing so much on pagerank?

Anyone outside the USA had success with HARO? Kind Regards

Why is Google not following a 301 redirect on the robots.txt file?
Hi Guys, I recently posted a question on the Google Webmasters Forum http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=683e71557db7fd54&hl=en&fid=683e71557db7fd540004a4b4add8cbb6 and didn't get a satisfactory feedback so I thought I will put this to the SEO gurus on here. Perhaps one of you guys might good buddies with Matt and might be able to ask him directly. I actually posted on Matt's blog but he hasn't got back to me. Basically we did a URL restructure for client and set up 301 redirects and saw a huge drop in rankings over time. The 301 redirects seem to work fine and have been tested by many many people. We suspected that google might be ignoring the 301 redirects or devaluing them and so I reviewed the server log to see what is happening when the googlebot crawls the site and it showed that on many occasions the googlebot did not reload the page after hitting a 301 redirect. Sure.. you might say it probably queues it or Google might just be checking that the 301 redirect is still in place but why check so often (with a few hours to a day on the same URL) it even skips a 301 redirect on the robots.txt file i.e. from http://clientsite.com/robots.txt to http://www.clientsite.com/robots.txt. from non-www to www version. I don't think it is easy to dismiss the skipping of the robots.txt file - this 301 redirect should be loaded immediately to use the instructions the gooblebot requires to crawl the page. Any help will be appreciated. I can sent the server log to anyone personally but I am reluctant to post it on here. Regards, Zan
