Print Advertisement Visit Tracking through Analytics
-
We put 2 different classified advertisements in printed publications and would like to track the visits to our website from each of the ads.
For the ads, we used custom pages:
www.domain.com/ad1
www.domain.com/ad2We used a 301 redirect from these URLs to the homepage but it didn't record the visits to the custom URLs in google analytics and clicky (other analytics software).
How do we set this up?

thanks guys. all very helpful feedback

I agree, unless you give people an obvious reason to type the ad-specific address, I imagine quite a few people will just type the domain and strip off the /ad (or whatever.)

Thorsten is correct about the GA analysis. I thought I would add in a couple thoughts just in regards to these offline marketing landing pages that will hopefully help. I would recommend in the future not choosing a url of /ad1 or /ad2. I would try to come up with something that is easy to remember for users and has relevance to either the publication or what you are promotion. For example /deal or /offer. Another way to go would be to make something relevant to the publication like /grpress (Grand Rapids Press is a local newspaper where we're at)
The other comment would be to design this page as relevant to the ad, offer or just make it a true landing page and not do the redirection technique. Make this page reference the ad and include a call to action related to what you may have placed in the printed publication.

Hi this one's tricky Your result most probably didn't show up in Google Analytics (GA) because the 301 is performed by your server BEFORE the GA tracking code is displayed. What I'd do for starters (very basic concept):
1. Create a HTML page on your "redirection URL" www.domain.com/ad1 that has the tracking code properly embedded (check with GA)
2. Have the page say something like "Taking you to your desired page" and have a meta refresh on that page. As you don't want that page to appear in SERPs I'd set that page to noindex aswell. This way using meta refresh doesn't matter
3. Make sure you have a link to the proper page on your redirection page, just in case the meta refresh isn't performed
4. Tada, that's it your page should show up in GA
If I come up with another solution this afternoon I'll add a post...

Why rich snippets have disappeared in Google search results ?
Hello, Few weeks ago, we have implemented a snippets strategy in order to increase our ranking for our blog posts. That was successful and our results were showing up in Google. But today, every single snippet has disappeared. We go back to a simple search result, without snippets for us or for our competitors. It seems that Google has delete rich snippet for specific keywords because for the generic keywords (for exemple "inbound marketing definition" in our case), there is still a snippet result. Do you know if Google has changed snippets parameters for keywords with low search volume ? Thank you !

What are the SEO challenges associated with private search engines, like DuckDuckGo?
I read recently that DuckDuckGo doubled in size in 2017. With their search engine, and other alternatives to Google, taking part of the search market away, how can SEO/Marketing/Web pros keep their websites optimized and get traffic from these private search engines? (Also, do any of you have experience with this? What portion of your search traffic is coming from private search engines?)

Anyone have any insight on phone number tracking issues?
I suppose this is somewhat of a stretch for SEO, but probably still falls under the Search Marketing umbrella. My ecommerce site issues a specific phone number to the user based on the referral path they used to get to the site (i.e. Our print media will have #A printed on it, while users that find the site via Organic Google Search will see #B, and etc... for other referral paths). Recently, we've seen a fairly significant dip in phone calls via the Organic Google Search telephone number. We've tried troubleshooting the issue and there doesn't appear to be a programming issue and our sales numbers do not reflect the change in call traffic. However, we have noticed that when visiting our website via encrypted.google.com, our default web number is being displayed, rather than the intended Organic Google Search telephone number. Do people still use encrypted.google.com? The dip in the phone traffic began in February and had continued to drop through April. Has anyone seen anything similar or possibly dealt with a similar issue that you can offer some insight on? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Rank Tracking Software
I am looking for a software to track all keywords my website is ranking for. I am aware that SEMrush can accomplish this, but as I am paying for mOz already, I was looking for something less expensive. mOz has a feature to track keywords that drive traffic to your website by linking it to your google analytics, but I want to find more than that...I want EVERYTHING. Does anyone know/use this kind of software *Please comment with specific programs/software/tools in your response. I need real suggestions. I'm not looking for the Matt Cutts "cookie cutter" answer (like what I did there?) like "you should search your analytics for words you're already ranking for". Thanks!
