Html extensions
-
I have remodeled an old html site using wordpress.
I see some instructions in wordpress that says I can add an .html extension to some of the pages, but it looks pretty complicated. Is there any benefit in going through that hassle? or should I just ask my web guy to rewrite via htaccess

I wanted to reinforce with Martijn and Gaston had said. I would just have your web person 301 redirect the old URLs to the new URLs. I would add to keep an eye out for any stray URL's that you may have missed in the Search console and redirect those too. They tend to pop up 1-2 weeks after a site move. Thanks!

Thank you both! You saved me a ton of work!

Hi Julie,
I can confirm what Gaston says, there is no additional value in changing the extension (or adding one) on files. In the end, it's not something that Google pays any attention nor adds any value to. That's why I would rather focus my energy on any of the other dozens of factors that do play a role in ranking higher.
Martijn.

Hi Julie,
Hope you're well.Besides what many people say, there is no gain in removing it.
Also, officially Google, via John Mueller, said that removing .html doesn't matter. And they made a video!
Will removing “.html” from my URLs help my site? - SEO SnippetsHope it helps.
Best luck.

Is it still a good practice to use "div's" to place content at the top of the HTML code, if your content is at the bottom of the web page?

HTML snapshot creating soft 404
Has anyone any experience with HTML snapshots? We have a recruitment client that has HTML snapshots against all job pages as they are built with AJAX. The pages naturally die after around four weeks (the job vacancy runs out) and whilst the AJAX version of the page hard 404s, the HTML snapshot version returns a soft 404. How can we get it to mirror the dead page with 404 status?

How best to deal with www.home.com and www.home.com/index.html
Firstly, this is for an .asp site - and all my usual ways of fixing this (e.g. via htaccess) don't seem to work. I'm working on a site which has www.home.com and www.home.com/index.html - both URL's resolve to the same page/content. If I simply drop a rel canonical into the page, will this solve my dupe content woes? The canonical tag would then appear in both www.home.com and www.home.com/index.html cases. If the above is Ok, which version should I be going with? - or - Thanks in advance folks,
