Need to change permalink structure - need advice on these two options
-
I have a client with a robust Wordpress blog that ranks well for a number of high-volume terms. We are doing a site rebuild, and they are adamant they don't want to lose any SERP ranking.
However, their permalink structure contains the date the post was published, i.e. https://www.company.com/blog/2018/10/28/blog-post-title
The date inclusion is not ideal for obvious reasons, but also because it's creating 404 links when pre-scheduling with Hubspot.
Option 1: Change the permalink structure for all posts, past and future, and implement 301 redirects
The only reason I'm not outright doing this is because there will be some slippage in the rankings, given that redirects only pass on a percentage of juice. The client doesn't want any slippage.
Option 2: Create a new instance of Wordpress in a new subdirectory and continue the blog from there
This will mandate a new structure for the blog posts; now posts will be children of /industry-blog/ instead of /blog/, but the old posts will remain as they are under /blog/ (and with dates intact). But I don't know if this will cause some hierarchical confusion that will negatively impact both the old blog and the new blog.
Any advice given is appreciated. Please feel free to correct me if I've gotten anything wrong, I've only been practicing SEO for a few years now.

Honestly, if the client is already on you about not losing SERPS, I'd just leave the structure as it is. Preserve it and move it over to the new site. It's not as clean as you would like it, but it does contain the blog title in it and that should contain relevant keywords/subject matter.
Can you expand on the 404 issue with Hubspot scheduling? Have you talked to them about this issue? They're pretty adaptive and I'm surprise their scheduling structure would produce 404's ahead of the post being published.
I hope that helps!

For me Option 1 with 301 redirect from the old structure makes sense. After all the pages re-indexed I would imagine they should keep their rankings ok. Like you said having custom urls does have additional benefits.

Need Professional Help with Site Structure, Page Authority, and Internal Linking
We are a 10 year + small (1000 pages) niche ecommerce site (Magento) that has recently lost rankings to a competitor. We out perform them in every metric so I do not understand them leap frogging us to the top spot. This has forced me to look at my site structure, page authority (rank), and internal linking. After reviewing a moz crawl issues report, here are some of my observations: Root domain has a PA of 40 Top 3 $ Category pages have a PA of 22, 18, 18 Multiple meaningless blog posts and other category/product pages have PA’s of 30+ Here is a screenshot of the crawl report with internal links, links, etc showing. I need some help - thoughts, suggestions, next steps in analysis?

Structuring navigation for maximum effect
Hi, I am working with a client (in the property niche) who has 200+ links on each page of their site mainly due to an extensive navigation menu. They have good domain authority (although some competitors have a lot better) and some excellent links from some fantastic domains but the keywords just aren’t moving. (Sidenote: most links point to the home page with some going to property detail pages not location pages which is where I’d like people to be landing). I am reviewing the site structure and other technical aspects and have some questions regarding how the navigation is structured. Firstly is 200+ links an ok number to have? Everything I read points to 100 being a magic number to aim for. Secondly, the site navigation menu contains a list of locations. The first tier being country, the second tier drops down to list the regions within that country, then a third tier drop down appears to list the towns and cities in those regions. So from any page in the site you can drill down to town/city locations. (Sidenote: I have run Hotjar on the site which shows most people are using the search facility not the navigation menu to search) Is this style of navigation ok or does it dilute the link authority/pagerank/juice being past to each page? Would a better option be to have the first and second tier in the drop down then the third level town navigation to appear in the sidebar at page level in the appropriate sections? What effect would such a change have on rankings?

Does Changing Hosting Provider Affect SEO?
I am having a site with more than 1,500 visits per day and I have suffered from two "blackouts" of one day each with my actual hosting Provider. I would like to change the Hosting Provider, but I am afraid of losing lots of visitors if I do the change. The change will be to a dedicated IP and the location of the IP will be in the same country. Will my site be affected on SEO results as a consecuence of this change? Thanks and regards Maria

Client needs a basic page analysis tool
I have a client that I work with that is a real estate business. They aren't in need or don't want to pay for full seo services at this time, but would like to do some basic page analysis and correction to make sure their pages are at least somewhat properly target for their keywords. The SEOMOZ tools that I have access to as a PRO are overkill for their needs. Do you all know of any basic tools that can just handle something like the page analysis feature of seomoz? Thanks for your help. Steven

Using categories in Permalinks
I am looking at updating my WP Permalink structure and wanted to know if I should continue to include the category after my domain as in www.maximphotostudio.net/weddings/6081/columbus_wedding_photography/ or maybe www.maximphotostudio.net/6081/columbus_wedding_photography and www.maximphotostudio.net/6082/dayton_wedding_photography. Any help is appreciated.
