Google Product Feed Newbie Question
-
Hi,
I don't know much of anything about Google Pruduct Feeds. Here is my starting point on thia:
1. Is this really free? We'd be doing it without Google checkout, just landing on our own pages with our own checkout.
2. Where do you upload the file?
3. What determines if you come up or not as a result? Any strategy or tactics involved?
4. We're the manufacturer of a product and late to the product feed game. The description that Google has used for our products is not ours or great. How do we change that product description that Google has for our products?
Thanks!

I would optimize your product pages for Google, and you don't have to be worried about what Google is posting based off of your feeds.
I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe Google will sometimes pull the lowest priced and/or the most frequently updated product feeds. Otherwise they tend to group the product from 8-20 stores or whatever. Your product descriptions get updated when they get changed within your feed. It is best to have your feed get automatically pulled by Google every day, then Google will give you a boost in rankings because your information is among the freshest and most accurate.
These are just opinions based on experience however, I have no data to back it up really. Check out this qa post here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/does-anyone-have-any-tips-for-optimizing-your-google-product-feeds

Hey Sean,
That is super helpful. Do normal title and description length parameters apply, just like a title/description tag?
On competitive terms, what determines who Google chooses to rank?
As the manufacturer, how do we get Google to change it's description of our products?
Thanks!

1. Yes, it's really free, regardless of whether you use it with Google Checkout or not.
2. You can upload your product file here:
http://www.google.com/merchants/bulkuploadsyou can find out more about the specification for the feed file for the US here,
http://www.google.com/support/merchants/bin/answer.py?answer=188494
different countries require slightly different specs.
3. Google merchant SEO is all about providing accurate data, giving your customers as much information as possible in your product feed file, and updating your feed as regularly as possible.

Questions About Link Detox
Greetings: In April of 2014 an SEO firm ran a link removal campaign (identified spammy links and uploaded a disavow). The overall campaign was ineffective and MOZ domain rank has fallen to 24 from about 30 in the last year and traffic is 20% lower. I purchased a basic package for Link Detox and ran a report today (see enclosed) to see if toxic links could be contributing to our mediocre rankings. As a novice I have a few questions for you regarding this the use of Link Detox: -We scored a domain wide detox risk of 1,723. The site has referring root domains with 7113 links to our site. 121 links were classified as high audit priority. 56 as medium audit priority. 221 links were previously disavowed and we uploaded a spreadsheet containing the names of the previously disavowed links. We had LinkDetox include an analysis of no-follow links as they recommend this. Is our score really bad? If we remove the questionable links should we see some benefit in ranking? -Some of the links we disavowed last year are still linking to our site. Is it worthwhile to include those links again in our new disavow file? -Prior to filing a disavow we will request that Webmaster remove offending links. LinkDetox offers a package called Superhero for $469.00 that automates the process. Does this package effectively help with the entire process of writing and tracking the removal requests? Do you know of any other good alternatives? -A feature called "Boost" is included in the LinkDetox Super Hero package. It is suppose to expedite Google's processing of the disavow file. I was told by the staff at Link Detox that with Boost Google will process the disavow within a week. Do you have any idea if this claim is valid??? It would be great if it were true. -We never experienced any manual penalty from Google. Will uploading a disavow help us under the circumstances? Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it!!! A/B Testing - Should I add product descriptions on my category landing pages as well as on product pages and if so . how to do this to avoid duplicate content
Hi All, I recently relaunched a new design on my tool hire eCommerce website and now display my products in grid form on my category landing pages as opposed to just a list view which we previously had on the old design. My bounce rates are alot higher than they use to be and my gut instinct is telling me maybe this is wrong . I want to do some a/b testing using a list view. My question is , previously in our list views we just showed the images and pricing and had on page content on the bottom of the page. The user would click on the product image and they would then we taken to the product page which has the product description , t&c, etc etc.. If I was to do this in my a/b testing but change it so we also displayed the product descriptions as well on the category landing pages . Is there a special way to do this as in effect, we would have duplicate content as the product descriptions are also on the product page?. Does anyone have any thoughts on this as to whether its a No No from an SEO point of view ?... Heres a short url link to one of my category pages - http://goo.gl/QJv5gw Historically we use to rank well for the category landing pages and not for the product pages. Our Rankings are down , bounce rates are higher so I am trying to sort both. We have good content on pages etc. Any advice greatly appreciated as always thanks Pete

Google and Product Description Tabs
How does Google process a product page with description tabs? For example, lets say the product page has a tab for Overview, Specifications, What's In the Box and so on. Wouldn't that content be better served in one main product description tab with the tab names used as (htags) or highlighted paragraph separators? Or, does all that content get crawled as a single page regardless of the tabs?

Google Phone Numbers
What process is performed to get a company's phone number to show as "A" on google maps. Google displays the phone number for the company on the map as "A" first. It would be beneficial to get that position. Is there a sub-category of seo that does this? Thanks in advance!

Questions regarding Google's "improved url handling parameters"
Google recently posted about improving url handling parameters http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/07/improved-handling-of-urls-with.html I have a couple questions: Is it better to canonicalize urls or use parameter handling? Will Google inform us if it finds a parameter issue? Or, should we have a prepare a list of parameters that should be addressed?
