Weird 404 Error URL's - Where to redirect?

For some reason, I end up with a bunch of weird 404 error URLs like these.
- /KRVWZ/SVfSZ/
- /wp-content/upl
- /MKWTZ/RKYQZ/
- /wp-content/upload
What should I do with them? Should I redirect them or is there a better way to do something with them. I do use Yoast Premium if that makes a difference.

Hi Steven,

I assume in the coverage part of search console?

If that is the case then Google can find them on your site. You may have a more serious issues Everett suggested. You need to be investigating this pretty quickly.

Let us know what you find and I am sure we will be able to help.

I will check the things you guys told me and see what I can find. The Urls were found in Google search console.

Hello Steven,

It could be:
- Bots poking around the site for vulnerabilities
- Old links out there if the domain was previously owned by someone else
- Parasite hosting (see MrWhippy's questions) in which someone hacks the site publishes content on your domain, usually for the purpose of linking to theirs.
- All of the above or something else
Here are some things to try:

1. Make sure your latest WP version is up-to-date

2. Install some security measures, like a plugin that thwarts "brute force" attacks, such as Log-in Lock Down

3. Update all account passwords, including the one used to log into your hosting Cpanel and FTP

4. Search Google for things like [site:yourdomain.com porn OR viagra OR cialis OR sex OR "credit cards" OR...]

5. Check Google Search Console for messages, including manual actions

6. Check Google Search Console for Queries that look out of the norm (see #4).

7. Use Moz or aHrefs to check for backlinks to URLs like that

Hi Steven,

Where are you seeing these errors?

Is it in google analytics? on MOZ? Different Software?

Have you tried navigating to the pages? Be careful about doing this.

have you looked at your site via FTP to see if you can see any strange files in there?

If you can answer these questions we may be able to help

Should we add our company's name in page title tag or not?

We have been adding our company (Townscript) name in all the page titles. For example, in an event page of Lucknow Conclave: www.townscript.com/lucknowconclave the page title is Lucknow Conclave | Alexis Society | Townscript I read somewhere that it's not necessary to put your company's name in the title tag. Is it right? Please help!

404 errors in wordpress... Pages have never existed so why is google trying to crawl them?

I've just logged into webmaster tools and have over 100 404 errors. I'm running wordpress and I recently added child pages to 2 of my categories like so. www.mydomain.com/category1/lincolnshire www.mydomain.com/category1/cambridgeshire etc... The 404 errors though are for pages or categories I've never created though. I have over 20 root categories but decided to test adding child pages to only two of them. The 404 errors are for www.mydomain.com/category5/cambridgeshire .... It seem that gogle has tried to crawl these pages that don't exist. Can anyone explain what's going on? When I click 'linked from' in webmaster tools it's showing links from pages on my site that don't exist also.

Can soft 404's hurt my rankings?

This post mainly pertains to soft 404's but I recently dropped a few ranks in my main keyword which I have maintained prior to this my better rank for well over 2 years. I participate in NO BLACKHAT and obtain links naturally. I want to describe a few issues that happened prior to my ranking dropping and see what you guys think. I started to receive about a week prior to my ranks dropping DNS issues with GWT. It was weird because when I would use Goole Fetch on those pages they would return just fine so I was not sure what was happening there. I use Google page speed server which did in fact decrease my load time (YEAH!!) so that was cool. About 1 week prior to my rankings dropping I enabled godaddy's Website Accelerator as well thinking that could help even more. Because of this I thought maybe this had something to do with my DNS issues with Google so I decided to turn off my website accelerator with Godaddy and just leave my Google pagespeed service on. I figure I don't need 2 of them anyways IMO. Also at the same time I started to receive a ton (31,000+) html errors with duplicate metadescriptions and titles. I discovered I had an error with my code which was displaying 2 different sets of descriptions and titles for each of these pages. I since then have fixed the issue and waiting for Google to index those pages. Here is were I think I might have been hurting from the drop in rankings. Some months ago (maybe 2) I decided to redirect my 404's to my homepage. Yes I know this is not good now and I have created a proper 404 page which returns the 404 code. I recently started getting a ton of Soft 404 errors in GWT which is what brought my attention to this issue. My question is, could my action of redirecting my users to my homepage as a 404 which obviously was returning a 200 on a page that did not exist be possibly the culprit to my ranks dropping?

How can I maintain my website's authroity if I change the domain name?

I have 2 sites. Site A is doing well and growing, but has a low Domain Authority. Site B is older, has a higher authority but I want to retire it as the site's topic is well dated. Can I move all of my content on site A, to site B, change site B's name to Site A's name keep its higher authority and add all of the content and 301 redirect from site A to site B? Hierarchy and consistency in ecommerce URLs

One of the first things I remember reading about SEO and URLs, a long time ago, is that keywords are important, and hierarchy is important, for search engines and for users. Hierarchy in URLs would give the search engines an idea of the structure of the site, and users would be able to edit the URLs to continue navigating. I'm wondering about URLs, hierarchy and usability lately, since I've seen that ASOS uses a new URL structure on their site. At first glance, I thought it was brilliant, so I would like to get all of your opinions as well. For those of you that haven't seen the URLs: for categories, ASOS uses a structure as you would expect it, but for products they don't insert the category in the URL. Instead they insert the brand name as the first part of the URL, followed by the product title. Some examples: Category:
www.asos.com/women/dresses/... Product:
www.asos.com/french-connection/french-connection-tie-waist-pocket-stripe-dress/... I can see the importance of brand name for a site like ASOS, and like how they stressed this by inserting not the category but the brand for products. I don't know how much ASOS still relies on organic non-ASOS related keyword traffic, but still. Now, for hierarchy, I guess a good internal linking structure will tell the search engines about the hierarchy of a site as well, right? So perhaps hierarchy in the URL isn't that important? Perhaps something like this would be just as good as anything, given a good internal link structure? www.onlinestore.com/category/

www.onlinestore.com/brand/product-title/ Now, I understand that if you use this structure, you wouldn't be able to have men/shirts and women/shirts, but let's say that you don't have subcategories that use the same names. In this case, how important is hierarchy? And, what do you think about this URL structure for an ecommerce site for which brands are important?

Would adding a line break tag into the product name affect SEO ranking and Google's ability to read the entire title?

Our client would like to include a link break so that part of the product name always showed up on a second line. Would this affect how Google bots crawl the product name? Would it also affect how Google would show the product name in a search result page? Thanks!
