SEO- Manufacturer v Distributor
-
In respect to a safety clothing manufacturer manage SEO on behalf of, I've noticed that product distributors own 85% of the page 1 SERPs leaving product manufacturers such as my client largely under represented for the vast majority of search queries such as 'safety boots'.
Love to hear your opinion on why this is and how I can combat it? TIA!
-
Yep this is widely known. In-fact, you may be surprised to learn that even those who both manufacture AND distribute their products are also under the kosh here. I work with a number of fashion brands who produce their clothing (which in many cases is really stylish, really high quality stuff) only to see their direct sales (from their own site) hindered by larger 'pure distribution' sites (sites which just distribute loads of items but don't manufacture any)
Here's the truth of the matter. It's not that distributors get some kind of unfair special treatment. Rather, it's that distributors aren't bound by the same limitations as manufacturers, or manufacturers with online distribution
I love all the brands that I work with, I think their goods are grade A (otherwise I wouldn't work with them). That being said, they can only list their own products on-site. Users commonly search for slightly broader terms which imply that they want to see a range of products to choose from (e.g: "men's shirts", "supportive bras" or "tailormade suits"). The truth is that for a user, the distribution sites ARE better. They can see a huge range of products on these sites and compare them all to find the best deal. This is part of the 'rise of the aggregators' phenomena. Nowadays, unless you're incredibly special - if you don't aggregate, you lose out (end of)
There's a reason that giant product aggregation sites (ASOS, eBay, Amazon, Bra-Stop) are killing it. They give people a one stop shop to solve their issue, then continue their lives happy that they have got a good deal. Even the services industry isn't immune to this, just look at sites like Money Supermarket and how dominant they are in Google's SERPs
Now you might say, ok - that makes sense for category level terms, but often these guys are beating my client even on product level terms. Why is that?
Well - by being such useful sites that make a big difference to user's lives, these sites organically spawn vast amounts of digital PR and UGC link coverage. They're frequently mentioned by the BBC, Forbes... you name it, they're in there (all the time and repeatedly). This builds up a colossal amount of SEO authority, which you basically can't compete with
Finally: often these distribution-only sites, because they are so dominant, are a client's main revenue stream (more than their own sites). That's because client's get paranoid that they will offend their distributors and they will then refuse to stock their products. That could be a disaster! But due to this paranoia, they often give distributors better prices for their products, than even their own native sites (if they are manufacturing and distributing directly as well - some do, some don't)
Due to this, they lose EVEN MORE product-level listings, as Google knows their listings are the worst deal for users. These patterns of thinking, keep the dominant distributors on top and leave crumbs for the rest of us
In the end, their success on Google is really a business decision and NOT a pure-SEO decision. Do they want to bite the bullet and cut their distributors off from their products, keeping all the Google SERPs for themselves? Well certainly that would cut those guys out completely - but any distributor originating cross-traffic would be lost. What if a user visited the distributor site for another search query (not related to your client's product), then saw your client's product later in their journey and purchased it? All of THAT traffic (which is substantial) is going to be immediately lost. So although cutting out the middle-men might seem smart, it's an incredibly unwise knee-jerk reaction
Still, you can never grow above the distributors until you make this choice. It's a choice that WILL hurt you, but in the long run will allow you to reap revenue figures which you never previously dreamed of. So who makes the decision of when the time comes, to go through this necessarry pain? NOT you. Not an SEO person. That responsibility rests with the business owner alone and if I were you, I wouldn't seek to influence it (risky)

International Domains for SEO
My company is international and we have websites for each country with Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD). I am in the US and I am seeing that other countries such as Costa Rica and Germany are ranking above us in search results. I thought Google automatically geo-targeted users by default and therefore I should only get .com or US results. Any idea why other countries would rank above our site?

SEO before Replatforming - Good Idea?
Hello, We are in the midst of a major replatforming of our current website, the process will take roughly six to nine more months to complete. We are completing revamping our site - the new site will be on the same domain, but almost everything is changing - from the category structure, hierarchy, architecture, different regions on separate URLs will not be on the same with a currency converter, URLs - you name it, we're changing it. There has been internal discussions for some time on whether we should hire an outside firm to help us with our SEO. I have a lot of experience in SEO but my role has changed recently and we have had trouble filling my previous role. We are not looking for help with the replatforming project, we have a great plan in place to preserve link equity, tags, etc. We are looking for general SEO help as if replatforming wasn't on the table. My question is, is this smart to do before replatforming? In my opinion, it's not. Our new site will have completely different URLs and will be so dramatically different. We could have someone do some keyword research, but we have already done the bulk of it. We have thought about and researched keywords for every new page we are creating. But from a technical SEO perspective, I don't see the point in getting someone. In addition, we just had a major SEO audit done last year and we completed the tasks from that audit on the current site; however, most of the changes were technical, not content based. Thoughts?

When I view html code of our website, I see this from yoast plugin this. I guess there is really something wrong, especially the page 2? Why so many meta? SEO for a redirected domain name
Our client is a law firm with a name that is challenging to spell. We have procured a domain name for them that is catchy, easy to spell, and plays well into their brand, or at least the current campaign. We're using the campaign domain to direct traffic to their website with a 301 redirect. We have placed the campaign domain in a variety of offline mediums including print and outdoor. The client is currently in the number 1 spot for a good number of our highest priority keywords, so I do not want to do anything to jeopardize that. I'm also not sure this campaign will be their "brand" long-term so I don't want to risk making a switch and making it back. So for now, I'm most comfortable leaving the campaign domain as a redirect to their primary domain. Recently, the client approached me complaining (legitimately) that when people google the campaign domain, they are brought to search results for an entirely different domain because Google "corrects" the domain name for them. This is obviously a bad thing, with many users defaulting to entering urls into Google instead of the address bar. If you tell Google that it was wrong about the autocorrection, our site is in the number 1 position. I liken the situation to Overstock.com using O.co as their offline domain, but overstock.com as their online domain. But imagine if you googled o.co and google brought you to a list of results for "on.co" because it assumed you fat-fingered it. Is there anything I can do to prevent the domain name from getting corrected by Google?

Pop Up Advertisement - Bad for SEO?
So i have been working with a company running their SEO for close to two years now. Since i started to engage with them they have always used a very simple pop up for the first time an end user visits their website (via javascript and cookies). The pop up simply ask them if they would like to download a solutions brochure from their website. So as far as pop ups go, it is at least relevant. The client loves this pop up, i do not. For a while we have always held spots #1-3 for a lot of our keywords but we have started to drop to lower on the first page. So i have been researching to see if some of the new algorithm changes are targeting sites with this type of functionality. If i have some data i could definitely get them to remove it. So the question is, do pop-ups hurt your organic ranking? Thanks for the input! Kyle

How Does SEO Help Local Businesses
Hello, I recently took a position as a digital marketing manger with a advertising agency. Its my job to grow the digital marketing department. One of the issues I am running into is 90% of our clients are local businesses. When doing keyword research it is very difficult to find keywords with lots of search. For example, if I am optimizing for a Ford dealership in Hackensack,NJ there are not a lot of searches for this term. How can I justify a larger SEO budget when there is just not a lot of search volume for these keywords? This is nothing like Dog Training Videos or something similar. Am I missing something? Where can I pull traffic from for local businesses to justify larger SEO budgets? Thanks, Bill
