Need Advice on Categorizing Posts, Using Topics, Site Navigation & Structure
-
Hey there,
My site had terrible categorization.
I did a redesign, and essentially decided to start over using Topics instead of categories - which appear as my site's main navigation. Now I need to assign a Topic to all my posts.
Is it safe to assign posts to multiple parent Topics from an SEO point of view? I want to do it since it would be helpful for users to find them in multiple locations some of the time, but I certainly don't want any SEO issues.
Also, should I de-categorize all of my posts since I'm assigning them to my new hierarchical taxonomy - Topics?
This is very important to finalize. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
- Mike

It sounds as though you should be OK in that case - if they are all site.com/post, then it shouldn't matter how many categories they are in.
In theory you can have Topics and Categories - it all depends on how the site is set up, but I would probably say it's best to focus your efforts on one if I had to guess without knowing the site and all the considerations inside out.
Good luck.

Hey!
Thanks for your insight Will.
1. So, all my post URLs are straight off the root domain, i.e. site.com/post, but my developer says we are using a hierarchical taxonomy.
The URL's would remain the same whether appearing in 1 or several parent categories from the user-point-of-view.
I can't draw conclusions here as I'm not well-versed enough, but am trying to provide more information.
2. In addition to the multiple-topic-assigning issue, I'm also not sure if I should be de-categorizing my posts since I'm using Topics as my new hierarchical taxonomy.
Or maybe I should just scratch Topics since I haven't even delved deep into them yet and just work with my current sub-par categories and expand on that.
So confused.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there,
The answer to this depends a little bit on how your CMS / website treats content that appears in multiple categories. The "correct" way of it working is that those pages are still accessible at only one URL (i.e. not at both /category1/slug and /category2/slug ). This is normally achieved either by having a primary category that appears in the URL (and then having that content also appear on the category2 page but not with category2 in the URL) or by having the content available at /slug and appearing on both category1 and category2 pages.
Assuming this is the case, then it's perfectly safe to have content appear in more than one category.
If not, you could investigate whether you can add a rel=canonical link from secondary categories to the primary category. This would be OK but you might want to limit it only to times when content really needs to be in both categories otherwise you may waste crawl budget depending on the scale of your site.
I actually wrote a post about the difference between URL structure and site architecture that you might find useful.

Help Setting Up 301 Redirects from Coldfusion Site to Wordpress Site.
I have created a new website and need to redirect all of the previous pages to the new one. The old website was built in coldfusion and the new site is built in wordpress. One of the pages I'm trying to redirect is www.norriseal.com/products.cfm to http://norrisealwellmark.com/products/. This is what I have in my .htaccess file <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">Options +FollowSymlinks

Site Not Being Indexed
Hey Everyone - I have a site that is being treated strangely by google (at least strange to me) The site has 24 pages in the sitemap - submitted to WMT'S over 30 days ago I've manually triggered google to crawl the homepage and all connecting links as well and submitted a couple individually. Google has been parked the indexing at 14 of the 24 pages. None of the unindexed URL's have Noindex or follow tags on them - they are clearly and easily linked to from other places on the site. The site is a brand new domain, has no manual penalty history and in my research has no reason to be considered spammy. 100% unique handwritten content I cannot figure out why google isn't indexing these pages. Has anyone encountered this before? Know any solutions? Thanks in advance.

Can an AJAX framework (using HTML5 + pushstate) on your site impact your ranking?
Hello everybody, I am currently investigating a website which is rendered by an AJAX Framework (Angularjs) using the HTML5 +API history - Pushstate methods.

Recently Google announced that they are able to execute Javascript and can therefore see the content and links to discover all pages in the structure. However it seems that it doesn't run the Javascript at ALL times. (after some internal testing) So technically it is possible it arrives on a page without seeing any content and links, while another time he can arrive, run Javascript and read/discover the content and links generated by AJAX.
The fact that Google can't always interpret or read the website correctly can therefore have negative SEO impact? (not the indexation process but ranking) We are aware that is better to create a snapshot of the page but in the announcement of Google they state that the method that is currently used, should be sufficient. Does anybody have any experience with this AND what is the impact on the ranking process? Thanks!0 -
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect?
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect? If this scenario requires a 301 redirect no matter what, I might as well update the URL to be a little more keyword rich for the page while I'm at it. However, since these pages are ranking well I'd rather not lose any authority in the process and keep the URL just stripped of the ".html" (if that's possible). Thanks for you help! Linking out to authoritive sites from my ecommerce site
Good afternoon SEOmoz community. I was looking for a specific answer or advice or opinion about linking out to other sites. My Site www.tacticalbootstore.com has been undergoing a complete content rewrite. In the process we have been told and read where it can be good to link out to other authoritive sites. One of the pages we have rewritten is here. http://www.tacticalbootstore.com/belleville-boots-sizing-chart-a-97.html We have not added the graphics yet as they are being built now. This is just an informational page about sizing of a particular manufacturers boots. Once you get to the bottom of the text we have added a link to the actual manufacturers page. Is this helpful for us in the SERPS or not? Thank you for your time. Chris

Photography Sites with Same Developer - Why Is One Ranking & Other Not?
I'm currently confused about the difference in ranking between two competing sites, created by the same agency. http://jmayphoto.com/index2.php#!/home (302 redirected from http://jmayphoto.com...yeah) is not ranking well, and I'm not surprised. However, competitor http://www.shanrenee.com/ is ranking within the top 5 spots for a primary target keyword (dallas wedding photographer) and I don't understand how it's doing so well. I definitely see differences, but not enough to explain how Shan Renee is one page. What am I missing?

Any Insights On HTML5 Parallax Sites & SEO?
Looking for any insights regarding experience with optimization and HTML5 websites that use parallax scrolling making the website only one page (single unique URL). If done right, I've seen a number of these sites with great UX, clean design and nice layouts, but it comes down to only being able to optimize a single page. Does Google view single page sites as less authoritative? I'll open the floor to any comments at all about this. Thanks in advance Mozzers.
