Quantifying Linking Campaign Value
-
Is there any way to predict if and how Organic traffic would change if we sucesfully added some high-quality links to our website?
Quantifying link value would help to plan how much time/efforts we should spend on quality link-building. I understand that the more good links we get - the better. But beyond that, I am looking for some methodology/data/formulas that would help to decide if links are worth pursing.
Here is an example:
Let's say we acquired 20 high-quality links from PR 0-5 pages of some trusted web sites of PR6-8. Let's say that on these pages would also link to 10-20 other web sites. Would such campaign be of some direct value to our ecommerce website of PR6?
My question is limited to how high-quality links improve overall Google search traffic to the website only. I am not interested in calculating value of individual keywords - most of our search traffic comes from long tail. I am also not interested in how to estimate referral traffic - both seem much easier topics to tackle. But how would I be able to measure the value of lets say 1 link from PR 8 site with a PR3 page, when there are 10 other external links on that page?
-
I agree that PageRank is a weak factor, but how else would I intelligently determine value of individual links from individual high-ranking pages?
Also, I am not looking to estimate referral traffic - that seems an easier problem to tackle. So, the question remains: How 1 link from high-ranking web site would numerically influence organic search traffic. Page Rank of a site, Page Rank of a Page, Number of other external and internal links from that page, PageRank of our website - seems like all are important factors in a model that I am trying to find.
-
First, you are wasting time looking at Pagerank in my opinion. You could look at your backlinks acquisition history and compare that to organic traffic history for your site to come up with a model.
Organic traffic is not just search traffic; so it would be good to look at a websites traffic data instead. Try to calculate a CTR for traffic on sites you have a link already and use that to build a model for future sites you are targeting for a link acquisition.
-
thank you, but again, I am not looking for a way to improve a keyword ranking. I am looking more for a formula which would approximate how strong links influence organic traffic for sites with different PageRank.
At the very least I am looking for some approximation
1) how many links of high PR would it take to increase PageRank from 6 to 7.
- how would this increase influence Organic traffic.
-
I do it in a few steps:
- Determine competitor that's one above.
- Determine competitors for each phrase.
- Measure strength of competitor's site.
- Measure the strength of competitor's page.
- Calculate traffic increase by one position based on current CTR and CTR averages across all phrases.
This process can be applied to multiple ranking scenarios.
-
You can still look at the categorical terms that you base your long tail strategy on for the methods mentioned. A good way to get an indication is looking at competitor links; then use traffic numbers for "phrase match"
You might consider making your link building more strategic in that it focuses less on the link and more on high value traffic potential. Target sites that are a really good match for what you sell.
Lets say you sell paint. Target fan sites then show rooms painted for favorite team themes and link to the paint colors on your site to achieve the same affect.

thank you, but I am not looking to improve traffic for select keywords - I am looking for an overall organic traffic lift. Most of our traffic comes from long tail.

I wrote a post on creating a link building budget that would probable be of some help: http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/linkbuilding-budget.html
The hard part about this is you do not really know how much an acquired link is going to help your rankings. You basically need to determine:
- How many links are necessary to rank for desired SERP position
- Revenue that traffic has to your business
- Calculate ROI for link building for a year or more

100 Links Warning
Our website is GarageFlooringLLC.com. We rank relatively well for our main keywords but I am always looking to rank better. The 100 links question has been discussed to no end but I believe our website provides a great example of why a small business might have more than 100 links and IF we need to drop below that. User Experience vs Rules I think it is fair to say that if customers cannot find what they are looking for, it does not matter how well you rank. Our menu is designed to get people to the page they want to be on in a single click. So What Now? Do we remove items from the menu and only link to categories adding an extra click or two to the customers UI or do we leave well enough alone

Link Building with a Scholarship
One of my clients is using a scholarship to build links. We have a nofollow PR campaign getting ready to start and are doing some social marketing for the scholarship page on the site. We are also trying to get backlinks from highschools and colleges that link to scholarship opportunities. So far this has been a slow process. Does anybody have any advice for speeding any of this up? Has somebody ever done a campaign like this before? Is there some kind of database with financial aid contact info for a lot of schools? I contact a lot of schools and always tend to get put on the backburner.

Create a link or redirect?
We have 60 demo movie pages on our site. We no longer link to these movie pages internally, because they are outdated; however, a lot of our partner companies are still linking to these pages. Some of these pages will have 10-15 linking root domains and a page authority of 30+... so pretty decent authority. These pages only include a movie on the pages, no links. I am trying to pass some of the link juice from these pages to other pages on our site. I am wondering if I should: A)Include transcripts on these pages, then link back to our current product page or solution pages? B)Set up redirects from these pages to a product or solution page? C)Set up a redirect to our homepage? Any advice? Thanks, Mike

How many links home on a page?
We are planning on a mega menu which will have around 300 links and a mega slider which will have around 175 links if our developer has their way. In all I could be looking at over 500 links from the home page. The Mega Menu will flatten the site link structure out but I am worried this slider on the home page which is our 4th most visited page behind our 3 core category pages. What are your thoughts?

Indirect SEO boost from links
I have 2 ecommerce sites, each with a blog. I am increasing my linkbuilding efforts, but I don't want to build too many links directly to my 2 sites over a short period of time. I have decided that I will add a certain number of links to sites/pages that are already linking to my main sites (for example, a blog post on my blog, guest post on another blog, article submission, etc.). How much of a benefit can I expect in terms of rankings? Has anyone tested this out or experimented with something like this? What are the pros and cons? I appreciate thoughtful comments.

Sitewide blog link and Article links
Hi Guys I just wanted to give you all a heads up on something I adjusted recently that worked really well and wanted to ask for your own experiences on this. 1. We have a blog that adds regular content and within the blog we link from the keyword we are targeting. Standard stuff right ! We were struggling for movement on a keyword so I removed the links from the articles and added a link on the site wide blogroll. The link on the blogroll included the keyword but was a longer descriptive link. Low and behold we got a first page listing when the changed it.The change in ranking was made a few days later. I have always been given the impression that site wide isn't that great ? So explain this one . Of course there are many other factors etc 🙂 What are your experiences and thoughts on what happened here ?

Too many links!
Hi, I'm running a wordpress blog (modhop.com) and am getting the "too many links" on almost all of my pages. It appears that in addition to basic site navigation I have plug-ins that create invisible links that are counted in the crawl...at least that's my guess. Is there a good way to control this in wordpress? A nofollow in the .htaccess? A plug-in that does this? (I'm sort of at novice-plus level here so the simplest solution is ideal.) Thanks!
