Is it possible to reverse a G algo update (Penguin/Panda)?
-
...if yes, how? Can you share resources / blogs / etc... I want to reverse my site's rankings.
Here's the gist of it:
- I recently purchased a website that has 600+ pieces of aged content on it.
- Domain was ranking great about 10 years ago (1M uniques a year)
- It apparently got hit by a G algo update in 2012/2013 (Penguin and Panda?), because the rankings have tanked (10 hits a day)
- In the past two years, the previosu owner published about 100+ off-topic blog posts and it appears been using the site as a PBN. The UX sucks and there's a ton of 404s. (NOTE: I am in the process of removing that content and have cleaned up the 404s).
Domain stats: 20+ years old (1998) and DA 32, linking domains 850+, inbound links of 16k+
What I've done:
- disavow (550 domains),
- fix all the 404s
What I'm doing / about to do:
- remove spammy content
- write new/fresh on-topic content
- update the site UX
- start a backlink building campaign
My questions:
- is it common to bounce back from a G algo update? is it hard / am I over my head / am I a sucker trying to get the site back alive?
- are there articles about bouncing back that you can share so I can learn more about this process? Or agencies / consultants, etc that you recommend?
- what other recommendations / suggestions do you have that would help reverse this 8-year-old penalty?
-
Agreed... the SEO landscape has changed greatly since 2012. I'll definitely have to re-invest in new, fresh content and start building backlinks.
But what I'm looking for specifically is a playbook for bouncing back from an algo penalty. I need a strategy. I was hoping others have been able to bounce back and have shared their experience.
ps - it's an algo penalty, not manual, so no messages or warnings in GSC unfortunately.

Hi there,
It is doable, but it will not be an easy task since now you have more competitors than back in 2012. I would say it depends on your specific vertical, your budget, and your end goal for this site. You need to see who you go against to because you need to consistently invest money into content and links in order to beat your competitors. If you still have a penalty is GSC then you should submit a reconsideration request by saying that you are a new owner of the site.

How does Google Maps/G+ traffic show up in Analytics?
Hi Moz Community, I've been trying to figure out how traffic from Google Maps (and G+) shows up in Google Analytics and am struggling to find a good answer online. If someone finds a business through Google Maps and then clicks on the website in the Maps listing, does that show up as a referral from Google Maps? Our site shows virtually zero traffic from Google Maps even though we have a number of listing. Two related questions: if someone clicks through to a G+ page from a Maps result and then visits our website from the G+ page, does that show up in Analytics as a referral from G+? Is traffic from Google Maps or G+ ALSO counted as organic traffic? (Would it be possible to accidentally double-count a visit as both organic and a referral from Maps/G+? Thanks everybody!

Is it possible to import data from an old Google Analytics profile to a new Google Analytics profile?
We have encountered a situation where a client's old SEO firm is refusing to grant us Admin access to our client's existing GA account. For security purposes (so the other SEO firm doesn't delete the existing GA profile) we have started a new Google Analytics profile. Again we do have access to the data in the old account. Is it possible to migrate this old data over (if we just have user access)? Thanks for the help

Anyone heard of or used Hadoop software for SEO/website analytics?
Hey Moz Community, We received an interesting email this morning from a client's marketing manager asking if we knew about or have ever used "Hadoop software" because "[Business owner name] says it’s supposed to help us see how people use our website and more." I've never heard of this software and upon looking around on the web, it says it can do a lot, but my client is a small law firm who average 800-1,000 visitors per month, mainly from their 2 local office cities/markets. Anyone have any thoughts on this or ever use this software? Thanks in advance. Patrick

Index.php and /
Hello, We have a php system and in the MOZ error report our index.php shows up as a duplicate for / (home page). I instituted a rel canonical on the index.php because the / gets better rank than the other. This said, the error report through MOZ still shows them as duplicates. Should I be using a 301 instead? Please help! Also, I would love a good technical SEO book (for bridging the gap between SEO and programmer) if someone can recommend one? Thanks in advance!

Google Analytic - Is it possible to see which organic keyword triggered goals?
Hi, I am trying to see which of my Google organic keywords triggered my goals? In GA I click > Conversion > Goals > Overview > Source Medium (This then says where my goals came from but when I click Google / Organic it just brings me to the overview page of my organic traffic). Is it possible to see which organic keywords trigger goals?

Google vs Bing/Yahoo SERP results?
I see large differences in Google and Bing/Yahoo SERP results for many keywords. Google shows many of our primary keywords in their top ten, while Bing/Yahoo rank the same one 40-50 or above. Do you have any insight on their differences that might account for this variation? We are legitimate, long time, white hatters at a small manufacturer that is one of the leaders in our industry. The only thing I can think of that might describe this issue is PPC advertising. Their algorithms wouldn't be that inconsistent would they? (We do much more paid advertising on Google) But generally this should have no affect, right? Thanks, George...
