How to implement multilingual sitemaps when not all pages have translations
-
We are trying to implement sitemaps for a site that has localized content for a few countries. We’ve concluded that we should utilize
sitemapindex
and then create one sitemap per country. Now to the problems we’re facing. Not all urls on the site have translations, how should these urls be presented in the sitemap? Should they be stated simply like so?
<url><loc>https://example.com/sdfsdf</loc></url>
So urls with the hreflang attribute and without are mixed in the same sitemap, or is that a problem? (I have added empty rows to make it easier to read)
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" <br="">xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"></urlset>
<url><loc>http://www.example.com/english/page.html</loc>
<xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="http://www.example.com/deutsch/page.html"><xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="de-ch" href="http://www.example.com/schweiz-deutsch/page.html"><xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http: www.example.com="" english="" page.html"=""></xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http:></xhtml:link></xhtml:link></url><url><loc>http://www.example.com/page-with-no-translations</loc></url>
<url><loc>http://www.example.com/page-with-no-translations2</loc></url>
<url><loc>http://www.example.com/page-with-no-translations3</loc></url>
<url><loc>http://www.example.com/deutsch/page.html</loc>
<xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="http://www.example.com/deutsch/page.html"><xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="de-ch" href="http://www.example.com/schweiz-deutsch/page.html"><xhtml:link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://www.example.com/english/page.html"></xhtml:link rel="alternate"></xhtml:link></xhtml:link></url> -
I continued to think about the matter and thought of this approach for adding the pages with no localization to the multilingual sitemap (just putting it here):
<url><loc>https://example.com/page-with-no-localization</loc></url>
Or is it better to put a simple link to the page in the sitemap?
<url><loc>https://example.com/page-with-no-localization</loc></url>

Additional question about which parts should go into which sitemap. The url https://example.com/us/driver-guides/railroad-crossings has 3 "translations". Where should all these <url>elements go? We've used a Google sheet provided by Ahrefs to create these. </url>
This one is for
us
so it should be put in theus
sitemap? (sorry about the code block being single line, I don't understand why they're not multi line)<loc>https://example.com/us/driver-guides/railroad-crossings</loc>
This one is for
uk
so it should be put in theuk
sitemap?<loc>https://example.com/uk/car/level-crossings</loc>
This one is for
se
so it should be put in these
sitemap? This one is the same as the first one. I assume it's for the "x-default" attribute. Where should it be put?
<loc>https://example.com/us/driver-guides/railroad-crossings</loc>

Are image pages considered 'thin' content pages?
I am currently doing a site audit. The total number of pages on the website are around 400... 187 of them are image pages and coming up as 'zero' word count in Screaming Frog report. I needed to know if they will be considered 'thin' content by search engines? Should I include them as an issue? An answer would be most appreciated.

Multilingual Blog Structure
Hi I have a domain in 20 languages. I want to integrate a wordpress blog (in subfolders) in the 3 most important languages like EN-ES-FR (actually they will be 3 independent blogs) and I want to know which structure is the best one. OPTION 1 domain/en/blog/post1 domain/es/blog/post1 domain/fr/blog/post1 OPTION 2 domain/blog_en/post1 domain/blog_es/post1 domain/blog_fr/post1 Last question. For the rest of the 17 languages of my domain, can I put a link the english blog or is not recommended because maybe too many pages will be linking to the blog? Thank you

XML Sitemap Issue or not?
Hi Everyone, I submitted a sitemap within the google webmaster tools and I had a warning message of 38 issues. Issue: Url blocked by robots.txt. Description: Sitemap contains urls which are blocked by robots.txt. Example: the ones that were given were urls that we don't want them to be indexed: Sitemap: www.example.org/author.xml Value: http://www.example.org/author/admin/ My issue here is that the number of URL indexed is pretty low and I know for a fact that Robot.txt aren't good especially if they block URL that needs to be indexed. Apparently the URLs that are blocked seem to be URLs that we don't to be indexed but it doesn't display all URLs that are blocked. Do you think i m having a major problem or everything is fine? What should I do? How can I fix it? FYI: Wordpress is what we use for our website Thanks

Can you 301 redirect a page to an already existing/old page ?
If you delete a page (say a sub department/category page on an ecommerce store) should you 301 redirect its url to the nearest equivalent page still on the site or just delete and forget about it ? Generally should you try and 301 redirect any old pages your deleting if you can find suitable page with similar content to redirect to. Wont G consider it weird if you say a page has moved permenantly to such and such an address if that page/address existed before ? I presume its fine since say in the scenario of consolidating departments on your store you want to redirect the department page your going to delete to the existing pages/department you are consolidating old departments products into ?

Duplicates on the page
Hello SEOMOZ, I've one big question about one project. We have a page http://eb5info.com/eb5-attorneys and a lot of other similar pages. And we got a big list of errors, warnings saying that we have duplicate pages. But in real not all of them are same, they have small differences. For example - you select "State" in the left sidebar and you see a list on the right. List on the right panel is changing depending on the what you selecting on the left. But on report pages marked as duplicates. Maybe you can give some advices how to improve quality of the pages and make SEO better? Thanks Igor

Can I use canonical tags to merge property map pages and availability pages to their counterpart overview pages?
I have a property website, for each property are 4-5 tabs each with their own URL, these pages include the overview page which is content rich, and auxilliary pages such as maps, availability, can I use a canonical tag to merge the tabs with very little content to their corresponding overview page which is content rich? I.e. www.mywebsite.co.uk/property-1/overview This page has tabs for map, town info, availability which all have their own url i.e. www.mywebsite.co.uk/property-1/map
