Re: Are long URLs bad for SEO?
Does a long domain name included on the count of characters bad for SEO as well? Here is an example : "https://kesslerfoundation.org/press-release/kessler-team-tests-regenerative-approach-preventing-osteoarthritis-after-knee-injury". This over 35 characters, however, does it begin after or before the domain name?

Unless your domain is 1000 characters it will not actually hurt google
or be bad for SEO technically.the problem is if you're already getting links & traffic you probably should not change them unless they go over Google's maximum do you think it's something absurd?
"John Mueller of Google: URL Length Is Not A Ranking Factor"
https://www.seroundtable.com/google-url-length-seo-28952.htmlWhat Is the Maximum Length of a URL? Technically speaking, your URL should never be longer than 2,000 characters. Any longer than this and Internet Explorer won't be able to load your page.
And make new URLs do not add as many subfolders to the domain name unless you're going to change it is what it is if you want to migrate because if you're saying that you need a lot more good reasons.

Domain Change
What is the average organic traffic loss one can expect after switching to a new domain? We went from .com to .org and are seeing 50% decline in organic traffic and 25% in Google news traffic. 301s were implemented from site.com/some-page to site.org/some-page and change site was completed in WMT. This traffic drop seems excessive...

Hi Mozers, is the AMP project is supposed to be an SEO factor on mobile platforms? Also, can it be used on ecommerce sites such as Magento or Shopify as well? Thanks!
It stands to reason that Google will favor early adopters of Accelerated Mobile Pages, but it seems heavily geared toward news publishers so far. What about regular Wordpress sites, or ecommerce sites like Shopify, should AMP be pursued on that type of CMS?

I've consolidated other domains to a single one with 301 redirects, yet the new domain authority in MOZ is much less that the redirected ones. Is that right?
I'm trying to increase the domain authority of my main site, so decided to consolidate other sites. One of the other sites has a much higher domain authority, but I don't know why after a 301 redirect, the new site's domain authority hasn't changed on over a month. Does MOZ take account of thes types of things?

Client with Very Very Bad Onsite SEO
So one of my clients has a really really bad website from the technical perspective. I am talking over 75k in violations and warnings. Granted, the tagging is done well but any other SEO violation you can think of is occurring. In any case, they are building a new website, and I am on a retainer for a couple hours a week to do some link building. I am feeling like I am not getting anywhere. What is your advice? Should I keep on keeping on or advice the client to put SEO on hold until the technical issues are resolved. I feel like all of this link building isn't having the value that it could have with a site like this.

Preferred domain
In GWT it gives an option to do the following but which is best? and why? If you specify your preferred domain as http://www.example.com and we find a link to http://example.com, we'll consider both links the same. | <label for="no_assoc">Don't set a preferred domain</label> |

Vanity Virgin Domains
Hi, I've acquired a vast amount of domains related to my industry over the past 2-3 years. The domains themselves are keyword rich, and likely to be highly searched in their respective terms. Most of the domains are virgin names, some are expired and re-registered names. I can appreciate re-registered names likely retain little value, but I'm wondering, if one was to setup each of the virgin vanity domains as a 301 re-direct, and add the redirected domains as a new submit to google, would there be any keyword relevance, or would this likely be a wasted effort or result in a penalty? I initially registered the domains to protect intellectual property, or prevent others from benefiting from the competitive terms (evil, I know), but I'd like benefiting from them, rather than renew each year and have them site there and do nothing. Thanks!

Redirecting a domain
I was setting up a new campaign and received the following error from Roger Robot. "We have detected that the domain www.sitename.com and the domain sitename.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here." I know about redirecting a PAGE using 301 Redirects and how to specify the www. canonical in Google webmaster tools, but is there a "DOMAIN" redirect that I'm missing. What would you suggest doing given the error message above. Thanks, Bill Sqnch.jpg
