Open Site Explorer missing links
-
Hi,
When the update of Open Site Explorer was released I noticed that the new version was missing a huge amount of links that the old version previously found. This still seems to be the case and it's pretty frustrating as we use the tool for our clients.
Is this something that everybody is seeing and if so SEOMoz when do you think you'll have a solution?
Many thanks

A very old thread but I am missing crunchbase and other big links to my http://www.adserve.com.au domain

Awesome. Thanks for the specificity. We'll look into this, and hopefully have these in either the next index, or the one following.

Hi Rand,
Thanks for the response...
I provide my clients with a acreenshot of competitive analysis screen every three months so that we can gauge their ongoing success. I ran into the issue that all of their DAs had dropped and so they started asking questions.
That prompted me to run a comparison out of interest against Worktracker, Yahoo and Sypglass to try to determine whether it was a real issue or just a few remote domains missing that I really don't need to worry about.
The results were as follows for the client that I tested: (number of linking domains)
SEOMoz = 31
Wordtracker = 80
Spyglass = 74
Yahoo = 67
That's a pretty big difference.
When I looked further into the detail I found that I was missing some pretty big domains including:
joeant
crunchbase
Yell (big in the UK)
Yahoo directory
econsultancy etc...
To be honest I did these tests about 2 weeks ago, although I have just checked again and theya re still missing. It would be great if you could have a look into these as currently the domains being reported are about 20-25% down on the others.
Thanks

Hi Jonathan - thanks for the feedback. We're constantly working to tweak and improve Linkscape's index, and in this latest round we tried to balance out some of what we'd seen last index with deep pages on large sites crowding out domain diversity and a wide breadth.
Of course, our goal is to have both over time, but we've got a lot of work to do to get to Google's scale. We suspect they keep between 100-150billion pages in their main index, and we've got 51billion in our latest update, so we know there's missing stuff.
On the other hand, Linkscape and OSE should still be very useful to comparative analysis against competitors or other sites in your field, and it should still be very useful for discovering high value link targets and important sites/pages.
If there's specific stuff you think we're missing, please don't hesitate to send to help at seomoz dot org.
Thanks!

Hi Jonathon,
Rand talked about a slight change of approach in the latest Linkscape update in a blog post earlier this week. Here is a link to the post: Linkscape Updates and Wireframes/Feedback on New Task List PRO Feature.
He did mention in the post that SEOmoz would welcome feedback on the change, so If you are experiencing issues it might be worth dropping a comment on the post.

Same /\
I only have about 7 or 8 links to my site (new site) but OSE says there is only 1

Where do I post this list of hacked sites?
Hey guys, Fairly new to SEOmoz but loving it so far. I was working on a new clients site a noticed some spammy links added right before the tag. Used Open site explorer to list the domains linking to the url and found nearly 300 unsuspecting domains. Some like heartresearch.com.au which just drives me craaazy, I have already emailed them. Below is the list. http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links.html?group=0&page=3&site=www.rhcie.com Short of emailing every single person can anyone suggest a forum or such that would be helpful for posting this information ? I know it's just a few links but it is frustrating to me and If I can do something about it I would like to. Thanks in advance. Jason

Open Site Explorer WAY Off in Terms of Link Profiles?
Hey, One of our websites is www.inspireeducation.net.au. I have noticed although tools like Raventools capture our links well, Open Site Explorer is doing a terrible job... For example the following page >>> http://www.inspireeducation.net.au/courses/training-and-assessment-courses/certificate-iv-in-training-and-assessment/ has many many more than 8 root domains linking, however Open Site Explorer only presents 8? We are finding the same problem for almost any page we review through Open Site. Does anyone have any idea why the numbers would be so out? The new links are NOT fresh links. Many are well-established (been there for years), and even many newer ones have been there for more that 60 days. I find the same thing when reviewing competitor sites.. is Open Site Explorer working properly at all at the moment?

Competitive Link Finder
Hi, just wondering if I am the only one who is not having much luck lately using the Competitive Link Finder . In the past it has worked pretty well. But as of the past week or so, it has only returned on link. I know there are many of them which should be found. Anyway, just curious if I am solo with this issue.

Non-Recognition of Links
Hi All, I asked about a client last month and have had to do some other digging to try to find out what's going on with its Google rankings. According to our link-building spreadsheet, we have got up to 50 links (from 50 domains) in process of being actioned and a large proportion of these are actually in existence. There are two questions:- 1. Open Site Explorer only recognises 3 domains - as I know that other domains exist and are pointing (mostly 'followed'), what can be the reason OSE doesn't recognise this? 2. What can be done to encourage these external links to be more easily accessible by OSE and, presumably other bots? Other Points:- 1. I initially thought it might be crawl blocking issue causing the rankings, but Bing/Yahoo rankings are slowly dragging themselves upwards. 2. Robots.txt is not blocking any of the site 3. Pro on-site analysis for the target keyword is 'A' 4. The website's stats per OSE are better than some competitors in the top 20 except on the root domain issue, which is why the above point is important. Link building for other clients has worked really well without hiccups and with general gradual recognition, so any tips from more experienced folks out there would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks, Martin

Open Site Explorer Question- Link Value?
One of my backlinks is from a site that has a page authority of 74. However, the domain is a domain I purchased and 302'd to my current main domain. What I'm wondering (without getting into why a 301 is better than a 302) is this: does OSE have any tool that shows if there is actually value in a link? My assumption is that despite this domain having a PA of 74, the 302 is not passing over any value. To be clear, I understand that a 302 doesn't pass over any SEO value, but my question is whether or not OSE shows the value of a link? Thanks!
