How And/Or If To Prune Footer Links
-
Hi,
I have a site with a site-wide footer that currently has 28 internal links. The footer terms are the terms the pages are focused on.
This footer is on every page of the site (hundreds of pages). Some pages of my site have 10 or so additional links pointing to internal and external pages (besides the footer) and some pages (like the homepage) have about 50 links besides the footer.
I'm going for a half dozen new terms with new pages that I would be adding to the site-wide footer.
Do you think I should trim the existing footer before adding these new terms? I guess I would remove the terms that show no real hope of ever getting to page one... like pages stuck in the 40s. Or, pages I for whatever reason don't care much if they rank or not.
Would trimming it to a smaller number do more to help the remaining linked pages/terms?
What do you think? Thanks!

Thanks, Ryan!

Do you think buttons higher up the page would be more valuable than footer links?
Yes. I should clarify and state that is my personal belief. The only official confirmation I am aware of is a single statement from Matt Cutts where he states "Google reserves the right to treat footer links differently from other links". Extrapolating from that statement and using logic, it seems the more visible a link is, the more weight would be applied to it.

Thanks, Ryan and duly noted about links in context. Do you think buttons higher up the page would be more valuable than footer links?

In that case, short answer: Yes**.**
The fewer the number of links you have on a page, the more juice will flow to those pages. You should also be aware that footer links are thought to be less valuable then links in content.

Thanks, but I wasn't asking about U/X.

When reviewing the links on your pages, there is one primary focus: what links are valuable to users. The only other thought I consider is legalities such as a requirement to provide a Privacy Policy link on the home page.
I would recommend performing analysis to determine which links are being used by your visitors. If a link isn't being used, remove it. Links affect how your page rank flows throughout your site. For optimal SEO you want to direct your link juice to valued pages.
Consider also most used don't ever see or use footer links. In my experience 28 footer links would be far too many for most sites. Every site is different and perhaps you might have a legitimate need for that many, but that is usually not the case.

Links Questions and advice?
I have a website which has a fair few link assets that are doing very well (a lot of really powerful sites have link to them with follow links) but my commercial pages are not doing as well as a lot of sites without any other investment than (mediocre) links direct to there commercial pages with at least 10% of them carrying the money anchor text. Even pages we have had a few links for with generalized real anchor text and reasonable links do not do as well as the above due to none of them carrying the money keyword? Is it me or does google still rely on links to the commercial page and keywords with anchor text to match the money term?

What to do with Authoritative footer pages?
Alo everyone! The site I'm working on has had a homepage that essentially used the footer as the main form of navigation on the site and the PA of each of those pages reflects that. I'm helping them re-organize the site (I'm still a noob though), and was curious for some input on this particular situation. Some of the most authoritative pages are: 1. www.charged.fm/privacy - PA 29 2. www.charged.fm/terms - PA 29 My question: Is this just a consequence of previous mistakes that we live with, or is there something involving 301's and creation of new pages that could help us utilize the link juice on these pages. Or should we come up with ways to internally link to 'money' pages from these pages instead? Thanks for any input, Luke

Which is better /section/ or section/index.php?
I have noticed that Google has started to simply link to /section/ as opposed to /section/index.php and I haven't changed any canonical tags etc. I have looked at my pages moz authority for the two /section/ = 28/100

/section/index.php = 42/100 How would I go about transferring the authority to /section/ from /section/index.php to hopefully help me in my organic serp positions etc. Any insight would be great 🐵0 -

Link Building
We have just recently launched a new website in Australia and as l am new to the SEO community, l was looking for a little advice on link building. Where is best to start? There are not many authorative websites for our industry. Are there specific websites that are good to link to? Are there any good tools to assist with this? Any help would be great. Thank you.

What are your thoughts on using Dripable, VitaRank, or similar service to build URL links too dilute link profile???
One of my sites has a very spamy link profile, top 20 anchors are money keywords. What are your thoughts on using Dripable, VitaRank, or similar service to help dilute the link profile by building links with URLs, Click Here, more Info, etc. I have been building URL links already, but due to the site age(over 12 years) the amount of exact match anchor text links is just very large and would take forever to get diluted.

Finding broken links / resources by topic
Hi fellow mozzers! In an effort to ensure we're exploring every avenue when launching our new website, I was hoping to find some useful broken links / resources that we could incorporate into our link building. We have used the standard tools for this (W3C, Xenu etc), but they all seem to have the same issue in that they reveal all the missing links on a site (although some don't actually tell you the page they are on), but you still have to sort them to see if the links/ resource is related to your theme. When you're on a niche site, this obviously isn't an issue, but on a site like Mashable (to use the example given in a recent SEOmoz blog) it could result in wading through hundreds of links to find one relevant one right at the end. Is there a tool that allows you to specify what theme links you are looking for from a site, or better yet one that allows you to check multiple sites for multiple missing themed links in one go? Or is the best way to export the list and just search the document for certain keywords?
