How are our competitors getting these inbound linking domains?
-
I'm currently managing SEO for my company's website, and I'm getting into link building for the first time. As part of the process, I'm using Open Site Explorer to see who's linking into our competitor sites, to get a better sense of what's available to us in our particular avenue of e-commerce. However, I'm finding that our competitors are getting inbound links from high-authority sites pretty far afield from selling jewelry - census.gov, parallels.com, warnerbros.com, and others. I try clicking through to these links, but each link starts a download of a file. I've seen .f4v, .7z, and .apk files listed as inbound links to our competitor. How is this happening? Again, I'm new to link building, so there may be a simple answer here, and if so I apologize for asking. However, this seems really strange to me, and a difficult situation to confront.

Hey guys,
Yep, Keri is correct, unfortunately We found a bug in ourJuly index with our new crawlers - they were crawling binary files as if they were links and, since they are not normal links, the crawler couldn't handle them very well.
We have made some updates to our crawling so it will go deeper into sites. The reason for these odd inbound links from high-authority sites is due to the crawler reaching much deeper into sites where there are more download (i.e. binary) links. The first issue is the crawler is counting a binary file as a link, but the larger issue, is that the crawler doesn’t really know how to handle these types of files. This bug is causing some links to be improperly associated with certain domains. This is why you’re seeing inbound links to pages that don’t really exist.
There are two steps to addressing this issue: changing how the crawler sees these file types and then fixing how the crawler handles these file types. We have made improvements to our algorithm so that we will be able to handle the majority of these files correctly, however, this update will need a few more weeks to propagate. The fix for this issue probably won’t be seen for another update, meaning late September. Our improvements should catch most of the issues, but there still could be a few cases we haven't addressed. If this happens, don't hesitate to let us know; we love feedback since it helps us improve and make our index even better!
The next step is to fix how our crawlers handle binary file links and prevent them from being improperly associated with certain domains. We are in the process of working through that issue right now. We’re doing everything we can to resolve this bug as we know it is alarming to see these phantom inbound links. Thanks for your patience!Carin

I think you might be seeing a bug in the way OSE is treating binary files as having links, starting with the July update. See this thread http://www.seomoz.org/q/latest-ose-update-strange-numbers-and-links while I ask for Carin to step in and comment on this question.

Here is a good list of them from Parallels.com. The Page strength is only a 17, but the domain strength is 100 and the links are not nofollowed.

Here are a few I've found (beware, I don't trust these links really):

I'm glad you posted this, because I noticed the same thing with one of my competitors as well. It was a file from Parallels.org, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Anybody got an answer?

I see some links on Youtube.com that look like they are "Do-follow" links am I wrong?
Hi, I have some videos on YouTube.com and I notice many of the links show as "Do-Follow" per the Moz Bar. I have a feeling they are not actually "Dofollow" links because they never show up in Moz Pro, SemRush or any of my other tools. Can some of you people with greater knowledge of YouTube please clarify why the links look like "Do Follow". I am specifically thinking of my own backlinks on the videos and also the links in the "Comments". Best Regards, Bill Dalessi

Same linking c-blocks trend as competitor
I noticed in our competitive link report that our number of linking c-blocks has risen and fallen in the exact same pattern as one of our competitors. Is there a reason why this would be happening?

Too many on-page links
I received a warning in my most recent report for too many on-page links for the following page: http://www.fateyes.com/blog/. I can't figure out why this would be. I am counting between 60-70 including all pull downs, "read more's", archive, category and a few additional misc. links. Any ideas or suggestions on this? Or what I might do to rectify? Perhaps it's just an SEOmoz report blip... We currently don't have the post list rolling to additional pages so it's kind of passively set up to be endless, but it's in the works.

Benefits of reducing on page links
This is more of a discussion point. What would be the measurable results of reducing the number of on page links, specifically on a home page, but let's assume by way of a large navigation menu most of the pages have a lot of links" For instance, would any of the stats on the MozBar be affected (let's start with the home page). Would the Page Authority or MozRank change at all, perhaps because there is less "juice" flowing out of the home page? Thanks! 🙂

Competitive Link Analysis Tool?
Hi, I ran a competitive link analysis report today and back came quite a few domains that 2 or more of my 5 main competitors link from. Is it worth me submitting links to these sites? And would i be best served submitting my homepage URL or submitting a brand page such as Creative Recreation Trainers? I want to target that brand but don't want to do it if my main URL is better? Any ideas? See below my report. | Subdomain | Subdomain mR | Subdomain mT | # Competitors | # Linking Pages | Link Acquired |

SEOmoz Report: Competitive Domain Analysis
Hi there, According to SEOmoz Dashboard's Competitive Domain Analysis, the 'Total Links' for our domain shot up (more than quatripled) in the last few weeks. We haven't really done much link building in over 6 months so not sure how to explain this. Did SEOmoz make updates to their bots? Could it be that the bots are finding all these links only now? We've been using SEOmoz reporting for almost a year now, and I've never seen this before. Some insight / explanation for this would be great. Thanks in advance,

Competitive analysis of inbound links
I am trying to figure out how to best use SeoMoz tools to do some competitive analysis of inbound links. With the site explorer tool I can "compare Link Metrics" I see that a competitor is beating me on External Followed Links and Total Linking Root domains. I want to dig further into this data and see how these are distributed. What I am really after is which root domains are sending them the most links. Knowing that 20k of their links are coming from 5 specific root urls would be great to know. Is there anywhere that I can see this data. Ideal column headers would be: Linking Root Domain of Followed Links (from this root domain) Linking Domain Authority The ability to drill down from there into specific links would be mind blowing. Is there any way to browse this type of data in SeoMoz?
