Website Grader Report - Permanent Redirect Not Found
-
Have you ever checked HubSpot's website grader at www.websitegrader.com? I usually notice that the tool gives an error namely "Permanent Redirect Not Found" with below explanation:
"Search engines may think www.example.com and example.com are two different sites. You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a "301 redirect") between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites. :(Website Grader)
Can we trust this tool?

Thanks Ryan, appreciated!

You are certainly welcome to set your preferred domain in Google WMT but it is not required to do such if you have your permanent redirection properly in place.
-
Definitely makes sense Ryan. Thank you so much!
One more question; there is settings under Google Webmaster Tools, where you can set www.example.com or example.com. After we have done permanent (301) redirection to one of the versions, we should adjust settings in Google Webmaster Tools as well, right?

I can definitely confirm this issue has a negative impact on SEO.
Let's use "mysite.com" as the root site. In this example "www.mysite.com" is a sub-domain. It's statistics such as Domain Authority are gathered independently of the "mysite.com" root domain.
If you want to see an example, try the wordpress.com site. You can create your own subdomain (subject to availability) on the wordpress.com domain. Try making Stradiji.wordpress.com. You will notice your DA starts off at zero. It is a different subdomain. In this same manner, the "www." and root domain are different sites.
I hope this makes sense.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the answer. My question was not so clear; I wonder how can we verify whether this has a negative SEO effect where there are hundreds of thousands websites in similar situation?
-
It is very easy to confirm whether the tool is working correctly or not.
Visit the site in question, then add or remove the "www." portion of the URL. A properly redirected site should adjust and only appear using a common URL. For example, the SEOmoz site uses the www subdomain. Try removing the "www." prefix and you will see the redirect happen where the "www." subdomain is automatically re-added. That is the correct behavior. If that change is not happening on the site in question, it should be fixed.

301 Redirect - Technical Question
I have recently updated a site and for the url's that had changed or were not transferring I set up 301 redirects in the htaccess file as follows This one works - Redirect 301 /industry-sectors http://www.tornadowire.co.uk/fencing But this one doesn't - Redirect 301 /industry-sectors/equine http://www.tornadowire.co.uk/fencing/application/equestrian/ What it does is change the url to this instead http://www.tornadowire.co.uk/fencing/equine ..... which returns a 404 page not found error The server is nginx based server and we have moved from a joomal platform to a wordpress platform I would be grateful for any ideas

IP redirects
My website, on a .com domain, displays a different language/content depending on the IP of the user. For example, if someone is browsing my web from Spain, it will show the spanish content, and so on. Does anyone has an idea on how will Google index my pages? Their servers being located in the US, I assume the bot will only crawl and index the english content. How can I tell the bots to do the same for the other languages/content? Thanks!

Website Redirects
Background information: We have a website (devicelock.com) which is currently our corporate website. The company use to operate under (ntutility.com) which is now being redirected to devicelock.com via a DNS Forward - 302 Redirect. The IT admin (a founder of the company) is reluctant to change it to a 301. The current flow is ntutility.com redirects to protect-me.com then redirects again to devicelock.com. When i search up Devicelock on google, it shows up as ntutlity.com. There is no devicelock.com homepage on google search. Question: Are there any negative implications about this? Is this hurting our SEO in any way? When i do link building, will this have any negative affects? Will my links for devicelock be attributed to devicelock.com?

302 Redirects & WordPress
Hi Mozzers- We started a WordPress blog for one of my clients to help improve the domain authority, increase visits, etc. a few months ago. I ran a crawl report a few days ago and noticed that the /trackback/ pages are getting redirected to the appropriate page using a 302 redirect not a 301 redirect. I've search through the forum looking for other similar questions and found one. The answer suggested that I use the TAC plugin and check for any malicious code. I did this and found nothing. Another response suggested using the Redirection plugin. I haven't tried this yet. Has anyone encountered this and if so, how did you deal with it. Thank you! LHC
